Identification of α-tubulin as an autoantigen recognized by sera from patients with neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus.

In a previous study we found in 50% of patients with neuropsychiatric manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (NP-SLE) organ specific antibodies to 45-56 kD proteins in a 100,000 g supernatant (SN) from bovine brain mitochondria. Aim of the present study was to identify the corresponding target antigen. A 100,000 g SN from bovine brain mitochondria was applied to SDS-gel electrophoresis. A 50 kD band recognized by sera from patients with NP-SLE in the Western blot (WB) was excised from the gels and applied to mass spectrometry. Several lines of evidence indicate that remyelination represents one of the most effective mechanisms to achieve axonal protection. For reasons that are not yet understood, this process is often incomplete or fails in multiple sclerosis (MS). Activated astrocytes appear to be able to boost or inhibit endogenous repair processes. A better understanding of remyelination in MS and possible reasons for its failure is needed. Glaucoma is a chronic neurodegenerative disease and one of the leading causes of blindness. Autoantibody based immune processes are assumed to be involved in its pathogenesis. However, it is still unclear to what extent autoantibody patterns found in the eye (aqueous humor) are congruent to systemic autoantibodies (blood). The moderating role of meaning in life in the relationship between perceived stress and diurnal cortisol.

Previous studies have suggested that meaning in life may buffer the negative effects of stress. This study is the first to investigate the moderating role of meaning in life in the relationship between the perception of stress and diurnal cortisol in two independent samples of healthy adults. The cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A) is highly expressed in striatal spiny projection neurons and represents a therapeutic target for the treatment of psychotic symptoms. As reported previously [J Biol Chem 2009; 284:7606–7622], in this study PDE10A was seen to be additionally expressed in the pineal gland where the levels of PDE10A transcript display daily changes.
