Evaluation of Silver Ion Bioavailability from Silver Doped Hydroxyapatite

2014

Thein vitrobehavior of silver doped hydroxyapatite (HAp/Ag) prepared by two wet precipitation routes were studied in water and simulated body fluid (SBF). In order to evaluate the silver ion bioavailability from HAp/Ag, the samples were soaked in SBF or water and kept at 37°C for fixed periods of time up to one year. After fixed periods of time, analyses of SBF and water solutions were performed and silver ion concentration within the solutions determined. According to silver release data from dense and porous HAp/Ag ceramic scaffolds, release rate of silver ions were reduced in water as the ion exchange there was slower compared to SBF solution. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron micr…

Amoxicillin-loaded polyethylcyanoacrylate nanoparticles: influence of PEG coating on the particle size, drug release rate and phagocytic uptake.

2001

Polyethyleneglycol (PEG)-coated polyethylcyanoacrylate (PECA) nanoparticles loaded with amoxicillin were prepared and the influence of the PEG coating on the particle size, zeta potential, drug release rate and phagocytic uptake by murine macrophages was studied. Experimental results show that this colloidal drug delivery system could be useful for intravenous or oral administration. The profile of amoxicillin release from PECA nanoparticles system was studied under various conditions similar to those of some corporeal fluids. In all these experiments, amoxicillin release in the free form was studied by HPLC analysis. Experimental results showed that at pH 7.4 drug release rises when molecu…

Fully Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme for the Two-Parallel Capacitated Machines Scheduling Problem Under Unavailability Constraint

2010

Abstract Decision Support Systems (DSS) ensure the computer-based support for the conscientious decision-making in solving problems that require a large amount of information processing and complex scenarios. DSS for Transportation (DSST) are intelligent systems that are used at operational and organizational management levels. Operating a DSST in a public transportation web-based monitoring system is presented in this paper.

A new formulation of the optimal compensation and reconfiguration problem including minimum load nodes unavailability for automated distribution netw…

2004

This paper deals with a new formulation of the optimal operation of electrical distribution networks problem in regular working state. In the new deregulated energy market providing reliable and economical service to customers is a primary task. The multiobjective formulation of the reconfiguration and compensation problem used in this paper considers as a primary object also the minimisation of the load nodes unavailability (UA) expressed in probabilistic terms. Therefore, the objectives to be attained through the optimisation strategy are: minimal power losses operation, minimum UA of the load nodes, load balancing among the HV/MV transformers, and voltage profile regularisation. The appl…

Performance assessment of field deployed multi-crystalline PV modules in Nordic conditions

2019

This paper presents an investigation of data monitoring quality and evaluation of performance degradation of four different multi-crystalline silicon (mc-Si) photovoltaic (PV) modules installed in the higher latitude conditions in southern Norway. Degradation of each module has been investigated in terms of degradation of short-circuit current (I SC ), open-circuit voltage (V OC ), fill factor (FF) and maximum power (P MPP ). The analysis for the period of monitoring data from 2014 to 2018 show no considerable module degradation compared to the standard degradation rate of all parameters. The statistical analysis of I SC shows an average degradation of 0.17% for all modules. Spectral correc…

Exercise dependence, eating disorder symptoms and biomarkers of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports (RED-S) among male endurance athletes

2019

ObjectivesTo explore associations betweenexercise dependence, eating disorder (ED) symptoms and biomarkers of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports (RED-S) among male endurance athletes.MethodsFifty-three healthy well-trained male cyclists, triathletes and long-distance runners recruited from regional competitive sports clubs were included in this cross-sectional study. The protocol comprised the Exercise Dependence Scale (EXDS), the ED Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), measurements of body composition, resting metabolic rate, energy intake and expenditure and blood analysis of hormones and glucose.ResultsParticipants with higher EXDS score displayed a more negative energy balance compared …

The carrying capacity for Mediterranean bivalve suspension feeders: evidence from analysis of food availability and hydrodynamics and their integrati…

2004

Abstract In order to assess the carrying capacity of two Mediterranean areas, the Incze et al. model and its modification were applied. Our measures were carried out in the Gulf of Gaeta (Central MED), where mussels ( Mytilus galloprovincialis ) are intensively cultivated (production of approximately 200 t per year) and the Gulf of Castellammare (Southern MED), where bivalve culture is not widely practised. Velocities of water current and in field filtration rates were measured in each area. Total suspended matter (TSM), suspended chlorophyll-a (CHLa), lipid, protein and carbohydrate concentrations in the particulate were measured seasonally and used as tools to evaluate the trophic status …

Hydrodynamic effects on the origin and quality of organic matter for bivalves: an integrated isotopic, biochemical and transplant study

2006

Different hydrodynamic conditions can affect both the origin and the quality of organic matter available to bivalve molluscs. I chose 2 environments with very different hydrodynamics (a Mediterranean lagoon open to flow and a closed pond), but similar with regard to temperature, salinity, depth, wind exposure and algae coverage, to investigate this. The lagoon was characterised by active flow and bivalve molluscs, whereas the pond was closed off from the lagoon’s main flow but characterised by mussel beds of the highest density ever observed in the western Mediterranean. Biochemical features, 13C and 15N contents of particulate and sedimentary organic matter, and isotopic signatures of domi…

Medroxyprogesterone acetate: steady-state pharmacokinetics bioequivalence of two oral formulations

1989

Two micronized oral formulations of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) (Farlutal and Clinovir) were compared in order to evaluate their relative bioavailability. Sixteen female patients with metastatic breast cancer were entered in a randomized cross-over study on 500-mg MPA tablets repeatedly administered (twice daily for 20 days). At the steady state, similar mean +/- SD serum levels of MPA were obtained (131 +/- 44 ng/ml for Farlutal and 136 +/- 45 ng/ml for Clinovir) and the two formulations proved to be bioequivalent (confidence interval at a significance level of 0.95 = 93%-107%).

Role of membrane dynamics processes and exogenous molecules in cellular resveratrol uptake: consequences in bioavailability and activities.

2011

In the fields of nutrition prevention and therapy treatment, numerous studies have reported interesting properties of trans-resveratrol (RSV), a natural polyphenol against pathologies such as vascular diseases, cancers, viral infections and neurodegenerative processes. These beneficial effects are supported by more studies showing the pleiotropic actions of RSV. Nevertheless, a crucial question concerning these effects is how the polyphenol, when applied to an organism, gains access to its targets. In this review, we focus on the biochemical and biological parameters involved in RSV transport, particularly the role of the phospholipid bilayer in RSV uptake (passive diffusion, carrier-mediat…
