Novel multipactor studies in RF satellite payloads: Single-carrier digital modulated signals and ferrite materials

2017

In this work it is reviewed the most novel advances in the multipactor RF breakdown risk assessment devoted to RF satellite microwave passive devices employed in space telecommunication systems. On one side, it is studied the effect of transmitting a single-carrier digital modulated signal in the multipactor RF voltage threshold in a coaxial line. On the other hand, an analysis of the multipactor phenomenon in a parallel-plate waveguide containing a magnetized ferrite slab it is presented.

High-Power Multicarrier Generation for RF Breakdown Testing

2017

Testing of satellite components for high RF power breakdown effects, such as multipactor and corona or passive-intermodulation, is a topic of growing interest in the aerospaceindustry. Switching fromthe classical single carrier approach to the more realisticmulticarrier scenario is very challenging from the experimental point of view. Themulticarrier signals, amplifiedby several RF power amplifiers, need to have controlled phase, amplitude, and frequency in each carrier. Fine tuning of the signal generator phases is required in order to compensate the phase drift occurring in the active elements of the test bed. This paper presents an efficient and low-cost technique to generate multicarrie…

The role of structural disorder on luminescence of Eu-doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3

2020

A detailed analysis of photoluminescence of Eu-doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) is performed using it as a tool for describing the local structure of NBT. The obtained results reveal the low symmetry of the Eu3+ local environment in NBT, as indicated by the observed maximal number of sublevels of the 5D0→7F1 and the 5D0→7F2 luminescence transitions, clearly observed at low temperatures. Approximation of the luminescence spectra by Gaussian peaks provides valuable information about the shift of the involved levels upon change of the excitation wavelength. Variation in the strength of the crystal field in Eu-doped NBT is evaluated. Temperature dependence of the luminescence above room temperature i…

Stability of melt flow during magnetic sonication in a floating zone configuration

2018

Combined static and alternating magnetic fields are shown to create an oscillating pressure that can cause cavitation in molten metals. A time-averaged flow is also excited, consisting of two tori squeezed to thin boundary layers. Flow instability develops as a standing wave between these tori.

PD characteristics at Square Shaped Voltages Applying Two Different Detecting Techniques

2016

Nowadays power electronic converters are widely used and the fast switching voltage fronts results in an increased stress on the insulation material and may cause a reduction of the HV systems reliability. Nonsinusoidal voltage waveform have influence on the partial discharges (PD) characteristics in insulating systems due to the increased harmonic content which causes problems mainly in electrical PD measurement setups. In fact, impulse voltages cause strong switching disturbances, which make it much more difficult to distinguish PD signals from noise. This work investigates the influence of repetitive steep pulses on different types of test objects exposed to square wave voltages applying…

Partial discharges at different voltage waveshapes: Comparison between two different acquisition systems

2018

In modern HV apparatuses the wide use of electronic converters, increase the stress on the involved insulation systems and thus affect the reliability of the whole power grid. Additionally, such non-sinusoidal voltage shapes contain high gradient flanks that create problems in the detection of partial discharge (PD) activity. The aim of this paper is to discuss the methodology on how to suitably approach PD detection in insulation systems exposed to various voltage waveshapes in general by comparing two different measuring systems. The first one, equipped with a resonant PD decoupler, designed specifically for detection at typical power electronic waveshapes and the other one, based on an a…

High-frequency electrodeless lamps in argon–mercury mixtures

2005

In this paper, numerical and experimental investigations of high-frequency (HF) electrodeless lamps in argon–mercury mixtures are performed. The intensities of the mercury spectral lines having wavelengths λ = 404.66, 435.83, 546.07 nm (7 3S1–6 3P0,1,2) and the resonance line λ = 253.7 nm (6 3 P1–6 1S0) are measured at a wide range of mercury pressures, varying the HF generator current and argon filling pressure. A stationary self-consistent model of HF electrodeless discharge lamp is developed including kinetics of the excited mercury and argon atomic states. Based on the developed model, the radiation characteristics of the discharge plasma are calculated. Numerical simulation of the line…

The helicoidal magnetic generator

2016

Recently helicoidal generator for the exploitation of sea wave energy has been proposed. This device can convert both the vertical and rotational movement of seawaves. The electrical energy generated by such a device must be converted and conditioned in order to match the instantaneous utility requirements and a power link from the sea to an interconnection is needed. In this paper, the authors propose a mathematical model of this device and preliminarily present a prototype of the machine.

Laser Ultrasonics Inspection for Defect Evaluation on Train Wheel

2019

Abstract Passengers’ safety and in-service life of wheelset axles play an important role in railway vehicles. For this reason, periodic inspections are necessary. Among non-destructive techniques, ultrasonic ones are widely applied in this field. The main disadvantage of conventional ultrasonic techniques is that the overall inspection of wheels requires the train to be put out-of-service and disassembly each part, which is time-consuming and expensive. In this paper, a non-conventional non-contact laser ultrasonic inspection for train wheels is proposed. The proposed method uses a laser interferometer to receive the ultrasonic wave without contact. The receiving system allows choosing the …
