Inverse problem for tripotential measures in the study of buried cavities

1996

This paper presents a solution to the inverse electrical problem for the interpretation of apparent resistivity anomalies due to empty buried cavities of quasi-spherical shape when tripotential measures are carried out. The anomalies of the apparent resistivities ra,rb andrg, and the composed resistivitiesrmand rt were previously calculated for a sufficient class of spherical models of resistivity anomalies. Then, for the whole class of models, some functionals of spatial distribution of the apparent and composed resistivity were identified and analyzed. They represent the average characteristics of the anomalies and, depending in a simple way on the fundamental parameters of the sources of …

Level-crossing rate and average duration of fades of non-stationary multipath fading channels

2017

The level-crossing rate (LCR) and average duration of fades (ADF) are important statistical quantities describing the fading behaviour of mobile radio channels. To date, these quantities have only been analysed under the assumption that the mobile radio channel is wide-sense stationary, which is generally not the case in practice. In this paper, we propose a concept for the analysis of the LCR and ADF of non-stationary channels. Rice's standard formula for the derivation of the LCR of wide-sense stationary processes is extended to a more general formula enabling the computation of the instantaneous LCR of non-stationary processes. The application of the new concept results in closed-form ex…

Tourism Statistics for Destination Management: The Trips/Arrivals Model

2014

Simply counting the number of tourists in a destination is not as simple as one might initially think. The present work intends to formalize a conceptual model by decomposing tourism nights, trips, and average duration of visit in a given destination, in terms of quantities and parameters that only for a small part could be derived from official tourism statistics. On the other hand, most of the quantities and parameters required for determining the number of tourists in a given destination are in general unknown, and need to be (directly or indirectly) estimated. Empirical evidences resulting from a survey on incoming tourism in Sicily are provided, showing the biases affecting supply-side…

Variations in teaching of removable partial dentures in Spanish dental schools

2010

Objectives: Despite the increasing demand for implant-based treatments, removable partial dentures (RPDs) are frequently used in the oral rehabilitation of partially dentate patients. Furthermore, the Bologna Declaration Agreement (1999) promotes the freedom of movement both of students among dental schools and of graduates across the European Union (EU). Given that inconsistency in teaching among dental schools may lead to confusion, this study aimed to evaluate the status of teaching and clinical experience reached by undergrad uate dentalstudents in Spanish dental schools in relation to RPDs. Study design: A questionnaire seeking information on the preclinical and clinical teaching of RP…

Efficient techniques for energy saving in data center networks

2018

Data centers are constructed with a huge number of network devices to support the expanding cloud based services. These devices are used to achieve the highest performance in case of full utilization of the network. However, the peak capacity of the network is rarely reached. Consequently, many devices are set into idle state and cause a huge energy waste leading to a non-proportionality between the network load and the energy consumed. In this paper, we propose a new approach to improve the efficiency of data centers in terms of energy consumption. Our approach exploits the correlation in time of the inter-node communication traffic and some topological features to maximize energy saving w…

A NEW COMPLEXITY FUNCTION FOR WORDS BASED ON PERIODICITY

2013

Motivated by the extension of the critical factorization theorem to infinite words, we study the (local) periodicity function, i.e. the function that, for any position in a word, gives the size of the shortest square centered in that position. We prove that this function characterizes any binary word up to exchange of letters. We then introduce a new complexity function for words (the periodicity complexity) that, for any position in the word, gives the average value of the periodicity function up to that position. The new complexity function is independent from the other commonly used complexity measures as, for instance, the factor complexity. Indeed, whereas any infinite word with bound…

Learning-Graph-Based Quantum Algorithm for k-distinctness

2012

We present a quantum algorithm solving the $k$-distinctness problem in $O(n^{1-2^{k-2}/(2^k-1)})$ queries with a bounded error. This improves the previous $O(n^{k/(k+1)})$-query algorithm by Ambainis. The construction uses a modified learning graph approach. Compared to the recent paper by Belovs and Lee arXiv:1108.3022, the algorithm doesn't require any prior information on the input, and the complexity analysis is much simpler. Additionally, we introduce an $O(\sqrt{n}\alpha^{1/6})$ algorithm for the graph collision problem where $\alpha$ is the independence number of the graph.

The mixed capacitated general routing problem with turn penalties

2011

In this paper we deal with the mixed capacitated general routing problem with turn penalties. This problem generalizes many important arc and node routing problems, and it takes into account turn penalties and forbidden turns, which are crucial in many real-life applications, such as mail delivery, waste collection and street maintenance operations. Through a polynomial transformation of the considered problem into a Generalized Vehicle routing problem, we suggest a new approach for solving this new problem by transforming it into an Asymmetric Capacitated Vehicle routing problem. In this way, we can solve the new problem both optimally and heuristically using existing algorithms. A powerfu…

A Coherent derivation of an average ion model including the evolution of correlations between different shells

2013

We propose in this short note a method enabling to write in a systematic way a set of refined equations for average ion models in which correlations between populations are taken into account, starting from a microscopic model for the evolution of the electronic configura- tion probabilities. Numerical simulations illustrating the improvements with respect to standard average ion models are presented at the end of the paper.

Rigidity of random networks of stiff fibers in the low-density limit.

2001

Rigidity percolation is analyzed in two-dimensional random networks of stiff fibers. As fibers are randomly added to the system there exists a density threshold ${q=q}_{\mathrm{min}}$ above which a rigid stress-bearing percolation cluster appears. This threshold is found to be above the connectivity percolation threshold ${q=q}_{c}$ such that ${q}_{\mathrm{min}}=(1.1698\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.0004)q}_{c}.$ The transition is found to be continuous, and in the universality class of the two-dimensional central-force rigidity percolation on lattices. At percolation threshold the rigid backbone of the percolating cluster was found to break into rigid clusters, whose number diverges in the…
