The effects on orange juice batch pasteurization in an improved pilot-scale microwave (MW) oven was evaluated by monitoring pectin methyl-esterase (PME) activity, color, carotenoid compounds and vitamin C content. Trials were performed on stirred orange juice heated at different temperatures (60, 70, 75, and 85 degrees C) during batch process. MW pilot plant allowed real-time temperature control of samples using proportional integrative derivative (PID) techniques based on the infrared thermography temperature read-out. Cel1 and Cel2 are members of the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum Mill) endo-beta-1,4-glucanase (EGase) family that may play a role in fruit ripening and organ abscission. This work demonstrates that Cel1 protein is present in other vegetative tissues and accumulates during leaf development. We recently reported the downregulation of both the Cel1 mRNA and protein upon fungal infection, suggesting the involvement of EGases in plant-pathogen interactions. This hypothesis was confirmed by assessing the resistance to Botrytis cinerea infection of transgenic plants expressing both genes in an antisense orientation (Anti-Cel1, Anti-Cel2 and Anti-Cel1-Cel2). Flow of turbulent superfluid helium inside a porous medium

The work deals with further developments of a study previously initiated, in which a macroscopic model of inhomogeneous superfluid turbulence, based on extended thermodynamics, has been formulated. The model choose as fundamental fields, beside the traditional fields, two extra variables: the averaged vortex line length per unit volume and the heat flux. Using this model the propagation of the fourth sound inside a superleak is investigated: it is shown that, if the configuration of the vortex tangle inside the superleak are not altered -on the average- by the presence of the walls, when the fourth sound is propagated, vibrations in the vortex line density are present, too.

International audience; Abstract Aim: To investigate how the survival of Listeria monocytogenes on parsley leaves may affect its ability to sustain process-related harsh conditions and its virulence. Methods and Results: Parsley seedlings were spot inoculated with stationary phase cells of L. monocytogenes EGD-e and incubated for 15 days. Each day, bacterial cells were harvested and enumerated, and their ability to survive acetic acid challenge (90 min, pH 4.0), to colonize abiotic surfaces and to grow as biofilms was assessed. Tailoring the excitation of fundamental flexural guide waves in coated bone by phase-delayed array: Two-dimensional simulations

The fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW) enables ultrasonic assessment of cortical bone thickness. In vivo, it is challenging to detect this mode, as its power ratio with respect to disturbing ultrasound is reduced by soft tissue covering the bone. A phase-delayed ultrasound source is proposed to tailor the FFGW excitation in order to improve its power ratio. This situation is analyzed by 2D finite-element simulations. The soft tissue coating (7-mm thick) was simulated as a fluid covering an elastic plate (bone, 2–6 mm thick). In 2000, the preventive excavation of the Ensisheim/Reguisheimerfeld site (Haut-Rhin), carried out by the ANTEA SARL company, brought to light 87 funerary structures belonging to a cremation necropolis dating from the beginning of the Late Bronze Age (around 1350-1050 BC). Following study of the material, 3 successive chronological phases and a possible cultural "faciès" centred on the bend in the Rhine at Basel, Switzerland, were distinguished. The application of numerical modeling to the analysis of the stability of both natural and man-made underground caves is rapidly increasing due to the availability of powerful numerical codes, that can account for either continuum or discontinuum behavior of the rock masses.
