This article explores Finnish LGBTIQ+ people’s break-ups. The long battle for equal rights has placed LGBTIQ+ people’s relationships under pressure to succeed. Previous studies argue that partners in LGBTIQ+ relationships try to appear as ordinary and happy as possible, and remain silent about the challenges they face in their relationships. Consequently, they may miss out on opportunities to receive institutional and familial support. This study aims to move beyond recurrent frameworks that take the similarity or difference between LGBTIQ+ relationships/break-ups and mixed-sex relationships as a predefined point of departure. Early marriage and cultural constructions of adulthood in two slums in Dar es Salaam.

This study examines under-18 marriage in urban Tanzania from an ethnographic perspective. Due to poverty and high unemployment, some girls aspire to early marriage. Two pathways to early marriage are identified: first, poverty and gendered economic disparities motivate girls to begin transactional sexual activity at an early age, leading parents to favour early marriage as a risk-reduction measure. Second, educational opportunities are often closed off to girls before marriage, as a result of which early marriage becomes the only culturally approved pathway that allows girls to present themselves to others as a self-sufficient agent. Causes and motives of early marriage in the Gambia and Tanzania : is new legislation enough?

Both The Gambia and Tanzania have high rates of under-18 marriage for girls and both also raised the legal age of marriage for girls to 18 in 2016. This ethnographic study of the urban Muslim poor in Tanzania and The Gambia explores the causes behind and meanings of early marriage in these countries and discusses the likelihood of the recent legislative changes to have effect on actual practice among the poor in the towns and cities of these countries.
Henkirikos parisuhteessa Suomessa 1850-luvulla

Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tutkitaan aviopuolisoiden välisiä surmia Suomessa 1850-luvulla. Työssä tutkitaan puolisoiden välisiä vakavia konfliktitilanteita, jotka kärjistyivät väkivaltaisiksi kuolemiksi, sekä suunniteltuja murhia, joissa saattoi olla mukana myös parisuhteen ulkopuolisia henkilöitä. Aihetta tutkitaan Turun, Vaasan ja Viipurin hovioikeuden päätöstaltioista. Aineisto mahdollistaa koko Suomen kattavan puolisonsurmien tarkastelun. Tutkimusmenetelmäksi on valittu temaattinen sisällönanalyysi, jonka avulla aineisto on jäsennelty ja tutkimustulokset esitelty. Sen avulla selvitetään henkirikostapausten yleispiirteitä. Oman elämänsä prinsessa : häät kulttuurissa ja naisten ajatuksissa

Tutkimus avaa näkökulmia ymmärtää häitä ja häiden juhlintaa kulttuurisena ilmiönä. Häät olen rajannut tässä tutkimuksessa tarkoittamaan nykyaikaisia 2000-luvun alun suomalaisia häitä. Työssä puhun hääjuhlailmiöstä, jolla tarkoitan yhä suureellisempien häiden suosion kasvua 1980-luvulta alkaen. Hääjuhlailmiöön kuuluu yhä suurempien juhlien järjestämisen lisäksi erityisen hääteollisuuden synty, sekä hääaiheisten media- ja kulttuurintuotteiden lisääntyminen ja leviäminen. Extending the Limits of Nature. Political Animals, Artefacts, and Social Institutions

This essay discusses how medieval authors from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries dealt with a philosophical problem that social institutions pose for the Aristotelian dichotomy between natural and artificial entities. It is argued that marriage, political community, and language provided a particular challenge for the conception that things which are designed by human beings are artefacts. Medieval philosophers based their arguments for the naturalness of social institutions on the anthropological view that human beings are political animals by nature, but this strategy required rethinking the borderline between nature and art.
