The complex business of survival by aposematism.

2005

The theory of warning signals dates back to Wallace but is still confusing, controversial and complex. Because predator avoidance of warningly coloured prey (aposematism) is based upon learning and reinforcement, it is difficult to understand how initially rare conspicuous forms subsequently become common. Here, we discuss several possible resolutions to this apparent paradox. Many of these ideas have been largely ignored as a result of implicit assumptions about predator behaviour and assumed lack of variation in the predators, prey and the predation process. Considering the spatial and temporal variation in and mechanisms of behaviour of both predators and prey will make it easier to unde…

Parasite resistance and avoidance behaviour in preventing eye fluke infections in fish.

2004

This paper examines the efficiency of acquired resistance in protecting the fish host, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), against the trematode parasite Diplostomum spathaceum, and the hypothesis that fish recognize areas where infective stages are aggregated and show avoidance behaviour. We found that when fish with a low level of infection were held in restricted cages in natural conditions they became infected and developed cataracts as a result of this infection. This suggests that acquired resistance is insufficient in protecting fish against the parasite or the deleterious effects of infection in conditions where fish could not avoid the parasite. Behavioural experiments in the labo…

Evolution of vertebrate survival circuits

2018

Evolution selects those adaptive features that increase reproductive probabilities and facilitate survival. Analysing the brain circuits mediating risk-avoidance (e.g. defense) and those allowing reward-seeking (motivated) behaviours in different vertebrates leads to several main conclusions. First, circuits mediating risk-avoidance are similar in all studied vertebrates, where they include amygdala homologues located in the posterior half of the cerebral hemispheres, in close relationship with the chemosensory systems. Second, in all vertebrates, reward-seeking behaviours involve the activity of tegmento-striatal dopaminergic pathways, plus other inputs to the ventral striatum, including a…

Interpersonal forgiveness and meaning in life in older adults: The mediating and moderating roles of the religious meaning system

2021

Forgiving others may play an important role in achieving meaning in life as it offers a valuable platform for deliberate moral acts of acceptance of positive affect, behaviour, and cognition towards a transgressor. The aim of this paper was to analyse the relationship between forgiveness and presence, and the search for meaning in life, as well as the mediating role of the religious meaning system in this relationship among older adults. A total of 205 older adults, 112 women and 93 men, participated in the study. The mean age was 72.59. The Transgression-Related Interpersonal Motivations Scale, the Meaning in Life Questionnaire, and the Religious Meaning System Questionnaire were employed …

Gamma Oscillations in the Temporal Pole Reflect the Contribution of Approach and Avoidance Motivational Systems to the Processing of Fear and Anger W…

2022

Prior reports suggest that affective effects in visual word processing cannot be fully explained by a dimensional perspective of emotions based on valence and arousal. In the current study, we focused on the contribution of approach and avoidance motivational systems that are related to different action components to the processing of emotional words. To this aim, we compared frontal alpha asymmetries and brain oscillations elicited by anger words associated with approach (fighting) motivational tendencies, and fear words that may trigger either avoidance (escaping), approach (fighting) or no (freezing) action tendencies. The participants’ task was to make decisions about approaching or dis…

Copulation duration, but not paternity share, potentially mediates inbreeding avoidance in Drosophila montana

2014

Studying the incidence of inbreeding avoidance is important for understanding the evolution of mating systems, especially in the context of mate choice for genetic compatibility. We investigated whether inbreeding avoidance mechanisms have evolved in the malt fly, Drosophila montana, by measuring mating latency (a measure of male attractiveness), copulation duration, days to remating, offspring production, and the proportion of offspring sired by the first (P1) and second (P2) male to mate in full-sibling and unrelated pairs. SNP markers were used for paternity analysis and for calculating pairwise relatedness values (genotype sharing) between mating pairs. We found 18 % inbreeding depressi…

Restrictive mate choice criteria cause age-specific inbreeding in female black grouse, Tetrao tetrix

2012

Inbreeding is generally rare in large, natural populations yet mate choice often appears to be random with respect to kinship. This suggests that the risks of inbreeding may be small because passive mechanisms of inbreeding avoidance, for example dispersal, are effective at lowering inbreeding risk. Previous theoretical and empirical studies have assumed that the risks of inbreeding are constant over an individual’s life span, but in the lek-breeding black grouse, inbreeding increases with female age. To determine whether inbreeding avoidance mechanisms are also age dependent, we generated four null models of random mate choice ranging from complete randomness to more biologically realistic…

DTMC modeling for performance evaluation of DW-MAC in wireless sensor networks

2016

Synchronized duty cycling (DC) aligns sensor nodes to wake up at the same time in order to reduce idle listening for medium access control (MAC) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Demand wakeup MAC (DW-MAC) is a popular synchronous DC MAC protocol which allows nodes to compete and transmit multiple packets in one operational cycle. This multiple packet transmission (MPT) feature makes DW-MAC more energy efficient when comparing with other existing single time competition based protocols such as sensor MAC (S-MAC). In the literature, no analytical model exists to evaluate the performance of DW-MAC. In this paper, we develop two associated discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) models and incorpo…
