Structural defects in Hg1−xCdxI2 layers grown on CdTe substrates by vapor phase epitaxy

Hg1−xCdxI2 20–25-μm-thick layers with a uniform composition in the range of x = 0.1–0.2 were grown on CdTe substrates by vapor phase epitaxy (VPE). The growth was carried out using an α-HgI2 polycrystalline source at 200 °C and in the time range of 30–100 h. The layers were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution synchrotron x-ray topography (SXRT). The SEM and SXRT images of Hg1−xCdxI2 VPE layers allow one to identify the defects affecting the layer structure. The paper proposes analytical forms able to represent with very good approximation the constitutive law experimentally deducible by means of uniaxial cyclic compressive tests on material having softening post-peak behaviour in compression and negligible tensile strength. We present results on simultaneous oscillation in continuous-wave at 1048 and 1386 nm in Nd3+:LaBGeO5 crystal. LaBGeO5 is a nonlinear positive uniaxial crystal with potential application for intracavity generation of yellow laser radiation at 597 nm. Due to the different cross section in both laser channels, simultaneous oscillation is achieved by axial hole burning in a standing wave (linear cavity). It is concluded that a stable output laser spectrum is obtained for an absorbed pump power of 700 mW. A laser competition with alternating single-channel and dual-channel oscillation at different pump regimes was observed in the experiments.
Broadband microwave gas sensor: A coaxial design

The method of gas detection by a broadband microwave gas sensor is presented in this article. The principle of this method is to use a sensitive material as substrate of a transmission coaxial line. The sensor represents an open line with an extreme surface in contact with gas. The interaction with the gas and the surface induces a dielectric variation of the substrate. From experimental results, the interaction between the sensitive material and each tested gas present a specific frequency spectrum of the reflection coefficient at the input of the line. Long axial crystals for PET applications: The AX-PET demonstrator and beyond

The usage of long, axially oriented scintillator crystals in a PET scanner has been shown by the AX-PET Demonstrator as a possible solution for a high resolution and high sensitivity PET detector. In the AX-PET implementation, arrays of wavelength shifting (WLS) strips, placed orthogonally behind every crystal layer, are used to define the axial coordinate. After extensive characterization measurements, the AX-PET Demonstrator has been successfully used for the reconstruction of several phantoms and a few rodents. Abstract Concrete and steel jacketing are common strengthening techniques for reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to axial loads. In the most of cases the external jacket is made leaving gaps between the strengthening layer and the slabs, avoiding to carry directly a portion of the load. In this way, the external jacket induces a confinement pressure on the inner column, and its beneficial effect is due to the increase of strength and ductility. Abstract In this paper the behaviour of R.C. members externally strengthened with steel angles and battens subjected to axial force and bending moment is analysed. A fibre model was utilised to predict the moment–curvature diagrams of the strengthened members on the basis of stress–strain curves of the constituent materials (confined concrete, steel bars and angles) recently derived by the author. A critical plane approach based on energy concepts: application to biaxial random tension-compression high-cycle fatigue regime

Abstract In this paper the energy parameter, defined for random loadings, is analysed. Under uniaxial loading this parameter distinguishes between the strain energy density for tension (positive) and the strain energy density for compression (negative). As a consequence, if there is no mean component in the random loading, we obtain a random history of strain (elastic and plastic) energy density with zero expected value. Under multiaxial loadings the normal strain energy density in the critical plane (i.e. the plane of the maximum damage) is understood as the energy parameter.
