Transverse Beam Spin Asymmetries at Backward Angles in Elastic Electron-Proton and Quasielastic Electron-Deuteron Scattering

2011

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetries in elastic scattering of transversely polarized electrons from the proton, and performed the first measurement in quasi-elastic scattering on the deuteron, at backward angles (lab scattering angle of 108 degrees) for Q2 = 0.22 GeV^2/c^2 and 0.63 GeV^2/c^2 at beam energies of 362 MeV and 687 MeV, respectively. The asymmetry arises due to the imaginary part of the interference of the two-photon exchange amplitude with that of single photon exchange. Results for the proton are consistent with a model calculation which includes inelastic intermediate hadronic (piN) states. An estimate of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry for the scatt…

Pinning down the strength function for ordinary muon capture on 100Mo

2019

Ordinary muon capture (OMC) on 100Mo is studied both experimentally and theoretically in order to access the weak responses in wide energy and momentum regions. The OMC populates states in 100Nb up to some 50 MeV in excitation energy. For the first time the associated OMC strength function has been computed and compared with the obtained data. The present computations are performed using the Morita-Fujii formalism of OMC by extending the original formalism beyond the leading order. The participant nuclear wave functions are obtained in extended no-core single-particle model space using the spherical version of proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pnQRPA) with two-nucleon…

Structure of transactinide nuclei with relativistic energy density functionals

2013

A microscopic theoretical framework based on relativistic energy density functionals (REDFs) is applied to studies of shape evolution, excitation spectra, and decay properties of transactinide nuclei. Axially symmetric and triaxial relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) calculations, based on the functional DD-PC1 and with a separable pairing interaction, are performed for the even-even isotopic chains between Fm and Fl. The occurrence of a deformed shell gap at neutron number $N=162$ and its role on the stability of nuclei in the region around $Z=108$ is investigated. A quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, with parameters determined by self-consistent constrained triaxial RHB calculations, is…

Confirmation of gA quenching using the revised spectrum-shape method for the analysis of the 113Cd β-decay as measured with the COBRA demonstrator

2021

In this article we present an updated spectrum-shape analysis of the $^{113}$Cd fourfold forbidden non-unique $\beta$-decay transition in order to address the quenching of the weak axial-vector coupling $g_{\rm A}$ in low-momentum exchange nuclear processes. The experimental data were collected in a dedicated low-threshold run with the COBRA demonstrator at the LNGS and resulted in 44 individual $^{113}$Cd spectra. These data are evaluated in the context of three nuclear model frameworks based on a revised version of the spectrum-shape method and the conserved vector current hypothesis. The novel idea devised in the present work is to fit the value of the small relativistic nuclear matrix e…

GYROCOMPU: Toolbox Designed for the Analysis of Gyrotron Resonators

2020

The key point of gyrotron design is the analysis of the radio frequency (RF) behavior in gyrotron resonators. This article proposes a comprehensive, user-friendly and effective gyrotron design toolbox (GYROCOMPU) based on the MATLAB platform. GYROCOMPU associates a relatively complete set of codes for gyrotron analysis and integrates them together into a graphical user interface (GUI). The solving algorithm of the cold cavity equations and self-consistent equations is improved. The solving method improvement in these calculation algorithms renders the analysis more efficient and accurate. Three typical examples of gyrotrons working in the 140-GHz TE03 mode, 42-GHz TE03 mode, and 140-GHz TE1…

Hydraulic assessment of an upgraded pipework arrangement for the DEMO divertor plasma facing components cooling circuit

2021

Abstract In the context of the Work Package DIVertor (WPDIV) of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been carried out by University of Palermo in cooperation with ENEA to assess the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cooling system, concentrating the attention on its 2019 Plasma Facing Components (PFCs) configuration, relevant to DEMO baseline 2017. The research activity has been performed following a theoretical-numerical technique based on the finite volume method and adopting the well-known ANSYS CFX CFD code. The PFCs cooling circuit thermal-hydraulic performances under nominal steady-state conditions, assessed mainly in terms of coolant total pressure drop, c…

Muon states in uniaxially strained iron

1984

Effects of lattice relaxation, quantum motion, and uniaxial strain on the internal field at a positive-muon site in iron have been calculated. The uniaxial strain gives rise to a statistical shift of the muon population at interstitial sites. The effect of the population shift is found to be primarily responsible for the observed changes in the muon-precession frequency. The theory also predicts a 1T temperature dependence of the frequency shifts. Peer reviewed

Biodegradable Membrane with High Porosity and Hollow Structure Obtained via Electrospinning for Oil Spill Clean-up Application

2023

The use of biodegradable polymers for the production of membranes to be used in wastewater treatment has attracted increasing interest considering the possibility of reducing the risk of second pollution. In this work, porous fibrous membranes based on polylactic acid and polyethylene oxide (PEO) blends were prepared. The solutions were electrospun using two approaches: (i) conventional coaxial electrospinning followed by leaching treatment (double-step, DS); (ii) coaxial wet electrospinning with in situ leaching (single-step, SS). By varying PEO type and processing method it was possible to control membranes structure and porosity. DS leaching treatment lead to surface porosity (i.e. shell…

germline mutations in women with familial breast cancer and a relative with haematological malignancy

2009

Biallelic inactivation of the ATM gene causes ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T), a complex neurological disease associated with a high risk of leukaemias and lymphomas. Mothers of A-T children, obligate ATM heterozygote mutation carriers, have a breast cancer (BC) relative risk of about 3. The frequency of ATM carriers in BC women with a BC family history has been estimated to be 2.70%. To further our clinical understanding of familial BC and examine whether haematological malignancies are predictive of ATM germline mutation, we estimated the frequency of heterozygote mutation carriers in a series of 122 BC women with a family history of both BC and haematological malignancy and without BRCA1/2 m…

Lateral magnification matrix from the dioptric power matrix formalism in the paraxial case.

2012

Background Previous studies have highlighted that power matrices fully characterize the concept of dioptric power of any astigmatic surface. Thus, the basic equations in physiological optics can be generalized using the matrix formalism of the dioptric power. Among others, lateral magnification has also been interpreted as a matrix but mainly concerning magnification modification induced by spectacle correction of refractive error. Purpose To provide a fresh look into a novel paraxial formulation for the assessment of the lateral magnification using power matrices and in presence of astigmatism for thin and thick imaging systems in general. Methods Linear optics provides the frame to genera…
