Travelling Strings, Beams, Panels, Membranes and Plates

2013

In this chapter, we will introduce in a general manner some of the most common models for axially travelling materials, which will be used in the rest of the book. We will introduce the linear models of travelling strings, panels, and plates. It will be assumed that the material is thin, i.e. its planar dimensions are much larger than its thickness. We will work in the small displacement regime, that is, with linear models approximating the behaviour of the system near the trivial equilibrium. As is well known in the theory of elasticity, this approximation allows for a decoupling of the in-plane and out-of-plane components in the dynamics of the system. We will concentrate on small out-of-…

Shear Strength of a Compacted Scaly Clay from Suction-Controlled Triaxial Tests

2012

The paper presents the results of an experimental research aimed at investigating the shear strength characteristics of an unsaturated compacted scaly clay. Shear strength was investigated by suction-controlled triaxial compression tests on dynamically compacted samples. Collected results point out that suction effects on stiffness and shear strength can be very different for suction values applied lower or greater than air entry value (AEV), corresponding to the material void ratio.

Constraining the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections with XENON1T

2019

We report the first experimental results on spin-dependent elastic weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) nucleon scattering from the XENON1T dark matter search experiment. The analysis uses the full ton year exposure of XENON1T to constrain the spin-dependent proton-only and neutron-only cases. No significant signal excess is observed, and a profile likelihood ratio analysis is used to set exclusion limits on the WIMP-nucleon interactions. This includes the most stringent constraint to date on the WIMP-neutron cross section, with a minimum of 6.3 × 10−42 cm2 at 30 GeV/c2 and 90% confidence level. The results are compared with those from collider searches and used to exclude new paramet…

WWOX-related encephalopathies: delineation of the phenotypical spectrum and emerging genotype-phenotype correlation

2014

International audience; BACKGROUND:Homozygous mutations in WWOX were reported in eight individuals of two families with autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxia type 12 and in two siblings with infantile epileptic encephalopathy (IEE), including one who deceased prior to DNA sampling.METHODS:By combining array comparative genomic hybridisation, targeted Sanger sequencing and next generation sequencing, we identified five further patients from four families with IEE due to biallelic alterations of WWOX.RESULTS:We identified eight deleterious WWOX alleles consisting in four deletions, a four base-pair frameshifting deletion, one missense and two nonsense mutations. Genotype-phenotype correl…

Considerations on the electromagnetic flow in Airy beams based on the Gouy phase

2012

We reexamine the Gouy phase in ballistic Airy beams (AiBs). A physical interpretation of our analysis is derived in terms of the local phase velocity and the Poynting vector streamlines. Recent experiments employing AiBs are consistent with our results. We provide an approach which potentially applies to any finite-energy paraxial wave field that lacks a beam axis. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under the project TEC2009-11635.

Diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of hemiplegic migraine

2020

Hemiplegic migraine (HM) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous condition with attacks of headache and motor weakness which may be associated with impaired consciousness, cerebellar ataxia and intellectual disability. Motor symptoms usually last <72 hours and are associated with visual or sensory manifestations, speech impairment or brainstem aura. HM can occur as a sporadic HM or familiar HM with an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Mutations in CACNA1A, ATP1A2 and SCN1A encoding proteins involved in ion transport are implicated. The pathophysiology of HM is close to the process of typical migraine with aura, but appearing with a lower threshold and more severity. We review…

Fatigue fracture planes and expected principal stress directions under biaxial variable amplitude loading

2005

Fatigue behaviour under multiaxial variable amplitude loading can be examined by applying the failure criteria based on the critical plane approach. Positions of the critical plane can be determined in relation to the principal stress or strain directions. In the present paper, the expected directions of the principal stresses under proportional and non-proportional loading have been obtained by averaging the instantaneous values of the Euler angles through special weight functions. The known weight functions based on stress parameters appear not to be efficient for each loading or material being analysed. Thus, the authors consider new weight functions based on energy parameters. The prese…

Effect of plastic deformation on photoluminescence of ZnTe bulk monocrystals

1999

Abstract In this work ZnTe bulk single crystals have been deformed by axial compression with the aim of analyzing the luminescence properties related to intrinsic structural defects like dislocations. Plastic deformation greatly decreases the overall PL response, near-band-edge luminescence as well as deep level-related emissions. Results indicate a close relationship between the so-called Y1 and Y2 bands and the density of generated dislocations. Plastic deformation also produces an emission band at 603 nm whose intensity is proportional to the amount of introduced deformation.

Investigations on the linear friction welding process through numerical simulations and experiments

2012

Abstract Linear Friction Welding (LFW) is a solid-state joining process applied to non-axisymmetric components. LFW involves joining of materials through the relative motion of two components undergoing an axial force. In such process the heat source is given by the frictional forces work decaying into heat determining a local softening of the material and eventually bonding conditions. In the paper the authors present a designed and assembled laboratory fixture for LFW operations and the results of an experimental and numerical campaign aimed to weld steel parts. The dedicated fixture permitted to highlight the effect of the most important process parameters. Process conditions allowing ef…

P-Type Doping of 4H-SiC for Integrated Bipolar and Unipolar Devices

2015

International audience; P-type 4H-SiC layers formed by ion implantation need high temperature processes, which generate surface roughness, losing and incomplete activation of dopants. Due to dopant redistribution and channeling effect, it is difficult to predict the depth of the formed junctions. Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) selective epitaxy is an alternative method to obtain locally highly doped p-type layers in the 1020 cm-3 range or more. The depth of this p-type layers or regions is accurately controlled by the initial Reactive-Ion-Etching (RIE) of the SiC. Lateral Junction Field Effect Transistor (JFET) devices are fabricated by integrating p-type layers created by Al ion implantation or …
