Devil’s vortex-lenses
2009
In this paper we present a new kind of vortex lenses in which the radial phase distribution is characterized by the "devil's staircase" function. The focusing properties of these fractal DOEs coined Devil's vortex-lenses are analytically studied and the influence of the topological charge is investigated. It is shown that under monochromatic illumination a vortex devil's lens give rise a focal volume containing a delimited chain of vortices that are axially distributed according to the self-similarity of the lens.
Three-dimensional behavior of apodized nontelecentric focusing systems.
2002
The scalar field in the focal volume of nontelecentric apodized focusing systems cannot be accurately described by the Debye integral representation. By use of the Fresnel–Kirchhoff diffraction formula it is found that, if the aperture stop is axially displaced, the focal-volume structure is tuned. We analyze the influence of the apodizing function and find that, whereas axially superresolving pupil filters are highly sensitive to the focal-volume reshaping effect, axially apodizing filters are more inclined to the focal-shift effect.
Forward-backward equations for nonlinear propagation in axially invariant optical systems
2004
We present a novel general framework to deal with forward and backward components of the electromagnetic field in axially-invariant nonlinear optical systems, which include those having any type of linear or nonlinear transverse inhomogeneities. With a minimum amount of approximations, we obtain a system of two first-order equations for forward and backward components explicitly showing the nonlinear couplings among them. The modal approach used allows for an effective reduction of the dimensionality of the original problem from 3+1 (three spatial dimensions plus one time dimension) to 1+1 (one spatial dimension plus one frequency dimension). The new equations can be written in a spinor Dir…
Load-carrying capacity of axially-loaded RC members with circular openings
2012
Abstract Core drilling is today one of the most used technique among the group of partially destructive testing methods in reinforced concrete (RC) members. Even if the engineering practice provided to extract cores only in beams, taking samples from columns could be often necessary. In this case, the presence of the hole introduced a geometrical discontinuity in the member, creating a disturbed region. Consequently, compressive stresses will disperse in lateral direction as they have to avoid the drilled area. A bursting tensile force will develop, in orthogonal direction to the column axis, and if no sufficient reinforcement was arranged, a vertical crack will form, leading to the concret…
Dynamic Behaviour of an Axially Moving Plate Undergoing Small Cylindrical Deformation Submerged in Axially Flowing Ideal Fluid
2011
Abstract The out-of-plane dynamic response of a moving plate, travelling between two rollers at a constant velocity, is studied, taking into account the mutual interaction between the vibrating plate and the surrounding, axially flowing ideal fluid. Transverse displacement of the plate (assumed cylindrical) is described by an integro-differential equation that includes a local inertia term, Coriolis and centrifugal forces, the aerodynamic reaction of the external medium, the vertical projection of membrane tension, the bending resistance, and external perturbation forces. In the two-dimensional model thus set up, the aerodynamic reaction is found analytically as a functional of the cylindri…
Volumetric multiple optical traps produced by Devil's lenses
2010
We propose the use of a new diffractive optical element coined Devil's Vortex-Lens (DVL) to produce optical tweezers. In its more general form it results as the combination of a Devil’s lens and a helical vortex phase mask. It is shown that under monochromatic illumination a DVL generates a focal volume with several concatenated doughnut modes that are axially distributed according to the self-similarity of the lens. The orbital angular momentum associated to each link in the chain is investigated.
An experiment to study the structure of the focal volume in apertured focusing systems
2001
We present a simple experiment, specifically designed for students of undergraduate optics courses, where the influence of an aperture stop position on the three-dimensional structure of the focal volume of focusing systems is studied. The experiment, which involves only simple optical elements, permits an undergraduate student to generate different focal structures by simply axially displacing the aperture stop.
Effect of steel collars on the seismic behaviour of axially-cracked historical stone columns
2014
Granite and heavy stone circular columns could often be found in the cultural heritage among ancient churches and historical buildings in all the Mediterranean area. Their good strength properties allow them to carry big load values, while their bright colours and aesthetical characteristics were used by a lot of architects in the past to achieve structural solutions with great visual impact.Though such materials have great compressive strength values, environmental effects, especially long term effects, can damage the structural members, by cracking them. In this way the slenderness of the column increases, and the presence of an imposed ground motion can be very dangerous, since the colum…
Clouds and red giants interacting with the base of AGN jets
2012
Extragalactic jets are formed close to supermassive black-holes in the center of galaxies. Large amounts of gas, dust, and stars cluster in the galaxy nucleus, and interactions between this ambient material and the jet base should be frequent, having dynamical as well as radiative consequences. This work studies the dynamical interaction of an obstacle, a clump of matter or the atmosphere of an evolved star, with the innermost region of an extragalactic jet. Jet mass-loading and the high-energy outcome of this interaction are briefly discussed. Relativistic hydrodynamical simulations with axial symmetry have been carried out for homogeneous and inhomogeneous obstacles inside a relativistic …
The origin of in-plane stresses in axially moving orthotropic continua
2016
In this paper, we address the problem of the origin of in-plane stresses in continuous, two-dimensional high-speed webs. In the case of thin, slender webs, a typical modeling approach is the application of a stationary in-plane model, without considering the effects of the in-plane velocity field. However, for high-speed webs this approach is insufficient, because it neglects the coupling between the total material velocity and the deformation experienced by the material. By using a mixed Lagrange–Euler approach in model derivation, the solid continuum problem can be transformed into a solid continuum flow problem. Mass conservation in the flow problem, and the behaviour of free edges in th…
