Photoionization of adsorbates on sites with non-axial local symmetry. An example of the symmetry group

We present an analysis of the influence of the local adsorption site symmetry on the angular distribution of photoelectrons ejected from adsorbed atoms or molecules. This analysis applies to photoelectron spectra obtained with photons of any energy in the VUV (photoelectron spectroscopy) or x-ray (XPS) regions, provided that the associated wave of the electron `sees' the neighbouring surface atoms. The adsorbate - substrate system is modelled by a cluster of symmetry group consisting of an adsorbate and several atoms of the substrate. Thickness sensitivity of ultrasound velocity in long bone phantoms

One approach to bone disease diagnosis such as osteoporosis is to measure the velocity of ultrasound propagating axially along long bones. In this study, the variation in velocity as a function of radial position was assessed using two polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bone phantoms with cross-sectional geometry similar to the human tibia but differing in medullary cavity diameter. Two ultrasonometers were used: these were a commercial device operating at a relatively high frequency (HF) of 1.25 MHz and a prototype low frequency (LF) device operating at approximately 200 kHz. Behavior of fiber-reinforced concrete columns under axially and eccentrically compressive loads

An experimental investigation into the behavior of 16 short, confined, reinforced concrete columns with and without steel fibers was carried out. The columns with square sections had a concrete core 165 x 165 mm (6.49 x 6.49 in.) at the midsection and were hunched at the ends to apply eccentric loading and prevent boundary effects. The specimens were tested to failure at different strain rates under two loading schemes: concentric compression and eccentric compression with a constant eccentricity. Elastic and piezoelectric properties of BaTiO3 at room temperature

Abstract We have calculated the phonon dispersion curves of barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) at room temperature. A lattice dynamical formalism using the shell model is used. This microscopic model includes the short-range interactions of axially symmetric type and the long-range Coulomb interactions and taking into account the electronic polarizability of constituent ions. Zone center phonon and a few phonons in the first Brillouin zone are used for fitting. The values of relevant parameters are critically analyzed. A calculation of the elastic and piezoelectric properties is presented and compared with the available experimental data.
Long axial crystals for PET applications: The AX-PET demonstrator and beyond

The usage of long, axially oriented scintillator crystals in a PET scanner has been shown by the AX-PET Demonstrator as a possible solution for a high resolution and high sensitivity PET detector. In the AX-PET implementation, arrays of wavelength shifting (WLS) strips, placed orthogonally behind every crystal layer, are used to define the axial coordinate. After extensive characterization measurements, the AX-PET Demonstrator has been successfully used for the reconstruction of several phantoms and a few rodents. Analytical modelling of force transmission in axially loaded RC columns with indirectly loaded jackets

Abstract Concrete and steel jacketing are common strengthening techniques for reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to axial loads. In the most of cases the external jacket is made leaving gaps between the strengthening layer and the slabs, avoiding to carry directly a portion of the load. In this way, the external jacket induces a confinement pressure on the inner column, and its beneficial effect is due to the increase of strength and ductility. However, shear stresses develop on the interface between the column and consequently, the external jacket can be considered indirectly loaded. Abstract In this paper the behaviour of R.C. members externally strengthened with steel angles and battens subjected to axial force and bending moment is analysed. A fibre model was utilised to predict the moment–curvature diagrams of the strengthened members on the basis of stress–strain curves of the constituent materials (confined concrete, steel bars and angles) recently derived by the author. Spin dependence of {\eta} meson production in proton-proton collisions close to threshold

Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high degree of the polarized proton beam of COSY, the reaction pp{\to} pp{\eta} has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power Ay. The angular distribution of Ay is determined with the precision improved by more than one order of magnitude with respect to previous results allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q = 15 MeV signaling s wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves. Structure of transactinide nuclei with relativistic energy density functionals

A microscopic theoretical framework based on relativistic energy density functionals (REDFs) is applied to studies of shape evolution, excitation spectra, and decay properties of transactinide nuclei. Axially symmetric and triaxial relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) calculations, based on the functional DD-PC1 and with a separable pairing interaction, are performed for the even-even isotopic chains between Fm and Fl. The occurrence of a deformed shell gap at neutron number $N=162$ and its role on the stability of nuclei in the region around $Z=108$ is investigated. In this paper we study the problem of the diffusion of one substance through the pores of a porous multi layered material which may absorb and immobilize some of the diffusing substances with the evolution or absorption of heat.
