Immediate loading with fixed full-arch prostheses in the maxilla: review of the literature

2014

Objectives: To critically review the evidence-based literature on immediate loading of implants with fixed full- arch prostheses in the maxilla to determine 1) currently recommended performance criteria and 2) the outcomes that can be expected with this procedure. Study Desing: Studies from 2001 to 2011 on immediate loading with fixed full-arch maxillary prostheses were reviewed. Clinical series with at least 5 patients and 12 months of follow-up were included. Case reports, studies with missing data and repeatedly published studies were excluded. In each study the following was assessed: type of study, implant type, number of patients, number of implants, number of implants per patient, us…

Immunomorphological differential diagnosis of maxillary cystic lesions with keratinization

2011

The face of conflict: Significant sharp force trauma to the mid-facial skeleton in an individual of probable 16th–17th century date excavated from By…

2016

A variety of injuries have always been associated with violence, consequences of which people had to deal with. In this paper we present a complex of craniofacial and dental injuries resulted from sharp force trauma. The basis of our study was historical skeletal material excavated from archeological site in Byczyna (11th–17th century), Poland. An individual whose skeleton was exhumed from the grave No. 610 exhibited healed, oblique trauma of the left maxilla, damage to the crowns of right central and lateral incisors and concomitant luxation of the right maxillary central incisor. We describe the mechanism of this trauma and complications that resulted from damage to the masticatory appara…

Impact of obesity and aging on crestal alveolar bone height in mice

2018

Obesity and aging are associated with periodontitis, which represents a chronic inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues, i.e. the periodontium. However, if both risk factors also have a negative impact on crestal alveolar bone in a clinically healthy periodontium, has yet to be elucidated and was analyzed in this in-vivo study. Eight C57BL/6 mice were fed a normal diet during the entire study. Half of these mice were sacrificed at week 19 (group 1: younger lean mice), whereas the other half of the animals were sacrificed at week 25 (group 2: older lean mice). In addition, four mice were fed a high-fat diet until their sacrifice at week 19 (group 3: younger obese mice). Mandible…

Comparison of peri-implant soft tissues in submerged versus transmucosal healing: A split mouth prospective immunohistochemical study

2018

Objective The present split-mouth prospective study involves an immunohistochemical evaluation of peri-implant soft tissue healing after the osseointegration period, comparing submerged and transmucosal approaches using two-piece implant systems. The null hypothesis was that both surgical procedures elicit a similar immune response of the peri-implant soft tissues. Design Thirty-one healthy patients were included in this study, in which two implants were placed in the right and left maxillary pre-molar regions. A total of 62 dental implants were analyzed, establishing a control side with 31 submerged implants, and a study side with 31 exposed implants bearing healing abutments. After a thre…

Retrospective study of maxilla growth in a Spanish population sample

2010

This study has been designed to evaluate the vertical and sagittal changes in the maxilla due to growth. A sample group was chosen of 38 individuals with normal occlusion, composed of 16 females and 22 males between the ages of 8 and 18. The total sample was divided into three groups: prepubescent (8-11 years), pubescent (12-14 years) and post-pubescent (15-18 years). A series of cephalometric angle parameters (SNA, maxillary height, slope of the palatal plane and maxillary depth) and lineal parameters (effective maxillary length, palatal plane length, middle third of the face height and convexity) were traced. Superimpositions of the initial and final cephalometries in the Ba-N plane and i…

Oral breathing and head posture

2006

Abstract Objective: To determine the head posture and cephalometric characteristics in oral breathing children. Materials and Methods: Lateral cephalograms taken in natural head posture of 35 oral breathing patients (OB) (mean age 8.8 ± 2.2 years SD; range 5–13 years) and of 35 patients with varied malocclusions and physiological breathing (PB) (mean age 9.7 ± 1.6 years SD; range 7–13 years) were examined. Results: A Student's t-test showed that an increase in angles NSL/OPT (P = .000), NSL/CVT (P = .001), FH/OPT (P = .000), FH/CVT (P = .005), and NSL/VER (P = .000); a decrease in the distance MGP-CV1p (P = .0001); and a decrease in the angles MGP/OP (P = .000) and OPT/ CVT (P = .036) were …

Two- and three-dimensional evaluation of the upper airway after bimaxillary correction of Class III malocclusion

2009

Objective The aim the study was to evaluate area and volumetric changes in the upper airway after bimaxillary correction of Class III malocclusion by the means of computer tomography (CT), and to compare these to the changes in linear measurements from lateral cephalograms. Study design This was a prospective clinical trial. Lateral cephalograms and CT scans of 10 Class III patients were evaluated 1 week before and 6 months after surgery. Wilcoxon matched pairs signed ranks test was used to determine the differences in measurements pre- and postoperatively. Spearman's rank correlation was used to test the association between the CT and cephalometric measurements. Results CT measurements: Th…

Cranial base and maxillary changes in patients treated with Fankel s functional regulator (1b)

2012

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess cranial base and maxillary growth in patients with Class II-type I malocclusions when treated with Frankel’s functional regulator (FR-1b). Study Design: The treatment group was made up of 43 patients that were divided into two groups: prepubescent (n: 28), and pubescent (n: 15). The control group included 40 patients who did not receive any kind of treatment and were likewise divided into a prepubescent group (n: 19), and a pubescent group (n: 21). A computerized cephalometric study was carried out and superimpositions were done in order to assess the antero-posterior, vertical and rotational movement of the maxilla. Results: The results i…

Prevalence of traumatic dental injuries and role of incisal overjet and inadequate lip coverage as risk factors among 4-15 years old government schoo…

2010

Objective: To assess the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) in school children in Baddi- Barotiwala, Himachal Pradesh, India. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out in Government schools among 1059 government school children aged 4- 15 years. The study was conducted from October 2009 to March 2010 during the school hours. The demographic detail was carried on a structured questionnaire. The data regarding the traumatic injuries was recorded using modified Ellis' classification. Results: Prevalence of TDI was found to be 4.15%. 95.45% of the injuries were to the maxillary anterior teeth. Maxillary central incisor was the most common tooth to be affected due to trauma (5…
