Aspetti etici e controllo di gestione dei farmaci antibiotici antibatterici
2010
Summary Introduction Antibacterial prescribing practices between 2004 and 2008 were investigated in the P. Giaccone University Hospital in Palermo, Italy to provide a foundation for critical analysis of the appropriateness of health-care resource usage. Materials and methods Antibiotic prescribing practices between 2004 and 2008 were analyzed in the hospital as a whole and in different specialty areas. Results were expressed as defined daily doses (DDD) as a function of bed-days, number of admissions, and Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) points. Results During the study period, increases were observed in the overall DDD per 100 bed-days (68.7 vs. 91.3) and the DDD per admission (4.53 vs. 5.54)…
Empirical Estimation of Accumulation-Induced Change in Gill Net Catchability: Mind the Observation Errors
2015
We analyzed cumulative catches for 24 h gill net exposures divided into 4*6 h, 2*12 h and 1*24 h soak time treatments to estimate the reduction in its catchability due to accumulation of fish. The effects of loss of catch during net lifting, disturbance effect and fouling were eliminated as far as possible to reveal the true effect of accumulation. First we applied simple nonparametric and parametric tests in comparison of treatments. As expected, considerable reduction in catchability took place along with the increase in soak time, indicated by significantly lower total 24 h catches from longer soaks in comparison with shorter ones. The reduction was more pronounced for roach than for per…
Comparative assessment of plaque removal and motivation between a manual toothbrush and an interactive power toothbrush in adolescents with fixed ort…
2019
Introduction The objective of this 2-arm parallel trial was to determine the plaque removal efficacy (main outcome) and the motivation assessment (secondary outcome) comparing a manual versus an interactive power toothbrush in orthodontic patients. Methods Sixty adolescents with fixed orthodontic appliances in both arches were randomized in a 1:1 ratio in this parallel, randomized, examiner-blind controlled clinical trial. Eligibility criteria included at least 16 natural teeth, 1-6 “focus care areas,” plaque score of ≥1.75, no severe caries, gingivitis and periodontitis, no dental prophylaxis, no smoking, no antibiotics, and no chlorhexidine mouth rinse. Subjects were to brush unsupervised…
Percepción de una comunidad educativa sobre el desarrollo profesional docente en la educación 2.0
2019
This article reflects on teachers’ professional development in an increasingly technological and informational society. We underline the need for digital literacy in the context of education 2.0 and highlight the challenges that teachers face in transforming new information and communication technologies (NICTs) into learning and knowledge technologies (LKTs) to enhance their professional development. This research has been conducted in a grouped rural school, constituted as a learning community (CA). It consists of two centers whose main difference rests on their use of NICTs: either advanced or preliminary. We have applied the communicative-critical methodology, starting with a case study…
Antiasthmatic effects of gamma linolenic acid -high dose Evening Primrose Oil and Borage Oil stimulate allergen tachyphylaxis of sensitized guinea pi…
2012
Summary Evening primose oil (EPO) and borage oil (BO), which contain high amounts of gamma linolenic acid (10% or 20%) and are described to stimulate prostaglandin E biosynthesis, were investigated in guinea pigs for their ability to stimulate an important active self protecting mechanism against allergens (“allergen tachyphylaxis”). Groups of 12 guinea pigs sensitized to ovalbumin were fed over five days with either EPO or BO (100mg/kg/day or 1 g/kg/day) prior to sequential allergen inhalation challenges (time 0′, 10′, 20′, 60′, 70′ and 80′). Bronchial obstruction was measured by whole body plethysmography. 100 mg/kg EPO did not alter the bronchial reactions of the animals; 100 mg and 1 g/…
Ganodermycin, a novel inhibitor of CXCL10 expression from Ganoderma applanatum
2011
CXCL10 (inducible protein-10) is a highly inducible chemoattractant, which contributes to the recruitment of inflammatory cells, such as macrophages and T-lymphocytes, and thereby has important roles in chronic inflammatory conditions. In a search for new inhibitors of CXCL10 expression in MonoMac6 cells, a novel compound, designated as Ganodermycin, was isolated from fermentations of the basidiomycete Ganoderma applanatum. The structure was determined by a combination of spectroscopic techniques. Ganodermycin inhibited the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/interferon (IFN)-γ-induced CXCL10 promoter activity in transiently transfected MonoMac6 cells in a dose-dependent manner with IC(50) values of 1…
Weiteres zum Lichtsinn augenloser Muscheln
1954
The cycless musselsAnodonta cygnea andPseudanodonta complanata do not show any phototaxis. In the “Zweilichterversuch” (two-light-experiment) they react to the decrease of light intensity. If light is increasing, the mussels will not react; if put in the shade, they immediately do so. If the shadow is moved, the mussels even react when the intensity of light decreases much less, which demonstrates the importance of motion. From this it follows that the reception of motion may be considered as possible where there is light sensitiveness of the skin, and where the experiment connects motion with shading.

Phenomenology and Semiotics. Crossing Perspectives.
2015
In recent years the study of relationships between semiotics and phenomenology seems to be entering a period of renewed vitality and creativity (CADIOT & VISETTI 2001; ROSENTHAL & VISETTI 2008; 2010; PIOTROWSKI 2009; FONTANILLE 2008; BONDÌ 2012). For a variety of theoretical and historical reasons, there has been a constant osmosis between phenomenological and semiotic methods. In short, on one side, the works and investigations of phenomenologists have provided essential tools to semiotics. To give just an example: the greimasian semiotics theory refers to the process of meaning formation in terms of perceptual apprehension thanks to his original recovery of Merleau-Ponty’s percept…
Symmetry Breaking and Establishment of Dorsal/Ventral Polarity in the Early Sea Urchin Embryo
2015
The mechanisms imposing the Dorsal/Ventral (DV) polarity of the early sea urchin embryo consist of a combination of inherited maternal information and inductive interactions among blastomeres. Old and recent studies suggest that a key molecular landmark of DV polarization is the expression of nodal on the future ventral side, in apparent contrast with other metazoan embryos, where nodal is expressed dorsally. A subtle maternally-inherited redox anisotropy, plus some maternal factors such as SoxB1, Univin, and p38-MAPK have been identified as inputs driving the spatially asymmetric transcription of nodal. However, all the mentioned factors are broadly distributed in the embryo as early as no…
