Pythium regulare sp. nov., Isolated from the Canary Islands, Its Taxonomy, Its Region of rDNA, and Comparison with Related Species

2003

Pythium regulare (CI-34) was isolated from some soil samples taken in the Canary Islands (Spain). This new species is very closely related to P. irregulare isolated from pea roots in The Netherlands by Buisman in 1927. The species of Pythium are members of the kingdom Chromista. Pythium regulare is characterized by its ornamented oogonia bearing blunt or digitate spines, and its non-sporulating type of sporangia or hyphal bodies, its aplerotic oospores, its monoclinous and diclinous antheridia that at times crowd around the oogonia. The taxonomic description of this oomycete, the PCR of the internal transcribed region (spacers ITS1, ITS2, and the gene 5.8 S) of its ribosomal nuclear DNA as …

Pythium carbonicum, a new species isolated from a spoil heap in northern France, the ITS region, taxonomy and comparison with related species.

2003

Pythium carbonicum (F-72) sp. nov. was found in soil samples taken on the top of a spoil heap in northern France. The morphology of this new species resembles that of a recently described species: Pythium megacarpum. However, the antheridial and oogonial characteristics of this new species are unique, and the comparison of its ITS region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA indicates that this species is also related to the genus Phytophthora. The fungus does not sporulate, the sporangia germinate directly into mycelium through germ tubes. The oogonia of P. carbonicum are smooth-walled and also papillated, and are provided with monoclinous and diclinous antheridia that wrap around, forming a compli…

Taxonomy of stock market indices

2000

We investigate sets of financial non-redundant and nonsynchronously recorded time series. The sets are composed by a number of stock market indices located all over the world in five continents. By properly selecting the time horizon of returns and by using a reference currency we find a meaningful taxonomy. The detection of such a taxonomy proves that interpretable information can be stored in a set of nonsynchronously recorded time series.

Using Chemical Structural Indicators for Periodic Classification of Local Anaesthetics

2011

Algorithms for classification and taxonomy based on criteria as information entropy and its production are proposed. Some local anaesthetics, currently in use, are classified using five characteristic chemical properties of different portions of their molecules. Many classification algorithms are based on information entropy. When applying the procedures to sets of moderate size, an excessive number of results appear compatible with data and the number suffers a combinatorial explosion. However, after the equipartition conjecture one has a selection criterion between different variants resulting from classification between hierarchical trees. Information entropy and principal component anal…

Metagenomics reveals our incomplete knowledge of global diversity

2008

Metagenomic sequencing obtains huge amounts of sequences from environmental and clinical samples, thus providing a glimpse of the global prokaryotic diversity of both species and genes in these sources. The current trend in metagenomic analysis follows the so-called gene-centric approach, focused on describing the environments by the study of the functional roles of the proteins encoded in the sequenced genes. In this way, it is clear that metagenomic analysis relies heavily on the accurate knowledge of the universe of proteins stored in the databases. Nevertheless, it is known that some biases exist in the composition of databases (which are rich in sequences from common, cultivable and ea…

Taxonomy of correlations of wind velocity;an application to the Sicilian area.

2008

Abstract We present an algorithm that allows us to analyze the cross-correlation of wind velocity measured in different locations; this algorithm is applied to 29 recording stations in Sicily. The results show that such correlations present a significant and persistent ultrametric structure that is influenced by the geographical neighborhood as well as by the presence of mountain and the sea. The algorithm presented, that is also able to reveal weak correlations, can be used as a starting point for the development of multivariate models of wind.

Oleanane-type glycosides from Pittosporum tenuifolium “variegatum” and P. tenuifolium “gold star”

2017

Abstract The phytochemical study of two cultivars of Pittosporum tenuifolium Banks & Sol. ex Gaertn, “variegatum” and “gold star”, led to the isolation of eight oleanane-type glycosides: seven previously undescribed and a known one. Their aglycons are oxygenated oleanane derivatives as barringtogenol C, camelliagenin A, hederagenin, and 22α-hydroxyoleanolic acid. Their structures were established by 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and mass spectrometry as 3-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[α-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1 → 3)]-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl-21-O-angeloyl-22-O-acetylbarringtogenol C, 3-O-β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[α-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1 → 3)]-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl-21,22-di-O-angeloylbar…

Terpenoid glycosides from the root's barks of Eriocoelum microspermum Radlk. ex Engl.

2018

Abstract Eight undescribed triterpenoid saponins together with a known one, and two undescribed sesquiterpene glycosides were isolated from root's barks of Eriocoelum microspermum. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D experiments in combinaison with mass spectrometry as 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)]-α-L-arabinopyranosylhederagenin, 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)]-α-L-arabinopyranosylhederagenin, 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)]-α-L-arabinopyranosylhederagenin, 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-[α-L-rhamnopyrano…

Synthesis and preliminary antibacterial evaluation of Linezolid-like 1,2,4-oxadiazole derivatives

2012

In the present study the synthesis of new Linezolid-like molecules has been achieved by substitution of the oxazolidinone central heterocyclic moiety with a 1,2,4-oxadiazole ring. Two series of 1,2,4-oxadiazoles, bearing different side-chains and containing a varying number of fluorine atoms, were synthesized and preliminarily tested for biological activity against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using Linezolid and Ceftriaxone as reference drugs

Morphological and molecular redescription of the myxozoanUnicapsula pflugfelderiSchubert, Sprague & Reinboth 1975 from two teleost hosts in the M…

2009

Elongate plasmodia with myxosporean spores belonging to the genus Unicapsula, Davis, 1924 were found in the skeletal muscle of the striped seabream, Lithognathus mormyrus (L.), a candidate for the mediterranean aquaculture. The only species of Unicapsula described from the Mediterranean is Unicapsula pflugfelderi Schubert et al. 1975, which occurs in the picarel, Spicara smaris (L.). For morphological and molecular comparison of U. pflugfelderi from S. smaris with Unicapsula sp. from L. mormyrus measurements of plasmodia and spores, ultrastructural details and 18S and 28S rDNA sequences were analysed. Whereas plasmodia were 2-3 times larger in S. smaris than in L. mormyrus (length 2.47-0.81…
