Assessing the effect of mercury pollution on cultured benthic foraminifera community using morphological and eDNA metabarcoding approaches

2018

Mercury (Hg) is a highly toxic element for living organisms and is known to bioaccumulate and biomagnify. Here, we analyze the response of benthic foraminifera communities cultured in mesocosm and exposed to different concentrations of Hg. Standard morphological analyses and environmental DNA metabarcoding show evidence that Hg pollution has detrimental effects on benthic foraminifera. The molecular analysis provides a more complete view of foraminiferal communities including the soft-walled single-chambered monothalamiids and small-sized hard-shelled rotaliids and textulariids than the morphological one. Endogenous β-neurexins on axons and within synapses show regulated dynamic behavior

Summary: Neurexins are key organizer molecules that regulate synaptic function and are implicated in autism and schizophrenia. β-neurexins interact with numerous cell adhesion and receptor molecules, but their neuronal localization remains elusive. Using single-molecule tracking and high-resolution microscopy to detect neurexin1β and neurexin3β in primary hippocampal neurons from knockin mice, we demonstrate that endogenous β-neurexins are present in fewer than half of excitatory and inhibitory synapses. A predominantly glial origin of axonal ribosomes after nerve injury

Axonal mRNA transport and local protein synthesis are crucial for peripheral axon regeneration. To date, it remains unclear how ribosomes localize to axons. They may be co-transported with mRNAs or, as suggested by recent studies, transferred from Schwann cells (SC). Here, we generated transgenic "RiboTracker" mice expressing tdTomato-tagged ribosomal protein L4 in specific cell types when crossed with Cre lines. Two neuronal RiboTracker-Cre lines displayed extremely low levels of axonal L4-tdTomato-positive ribosomes. Fungal root endophytes, including the common group of dark septate endophytes (DSEs), represent different taxonomic groups and potentially diverse life strategies. Two new resinicolous mycocalicioid fungi from the Acadian Forest: One new to science, the other new to North America

Abstract Chaenothecopsis claydenii is described as new from New Brunswick, Canada, and C. eugenia, also from New Brunswick, is reported for the first time in North America. Both species grow on the resin of Picea spp. in the Acadian Forest and bring to 91 the number of calicioid lichens and fungi known for the ecoregion. Diagnoses and information on the taxonomy and ecology of each species is provided, as is a worldwide key to the mycocalicioid taxa growing on conifer resin.
