Light Induced Modifications of Langmuir-Blodgett-Multilayer Assemblies Containing Amphotropic Azocopolymer

Abstract Photochromic LB-multilayers of amphotropic copolymers having rod-like azobenzene moieties as side groups which exhibit thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour in the bulk have been characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy as well as by angular dependent and energy dispersive SAXS. Upon irradiation with UV-light the initial optical in-plane anisotropy and the vertical layered structure of LB-films can be destroyed. A new layered structure can be rebuilt on irradiation with visible light or by annealing. Using linearly polarized light for the irradiation an optical anisotropy (POA) has been induced or reversibly modified by a photoselection process.

Large Azobenzene Macrocycles : Formation and Detection by NMR and MS Methods

Azobenzene macrocycles are widely investigated as potential drug delivery systems and as part of molecular machines due to their photo-responsive properties. Herein, we detect the formation of a series of new azobenzene macrocycles that feature up to eight switchable repeating units. High-resolution mass spectrometry and ion mobility (IM) mass spectrometry experiments and 1H and diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) NMR are used to detect the presence of the macrocycles that contain 10 to 40 aromatic rings in the gas phase and solution, respectively. The spectrum of allergic (cross-)sensitivity in clinical patch testing with 'para amino' compounds

Background: Allergic contact sensitization to ‘para amino’ compounds is frequent and the spectrum of cross-reactivity between members of this chemical group is variable. Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical patch test data obtained with a special test series in the centres of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) between 1995 and 1999. Results: In the 638 patients tested with the above test panel positive reactions were observed most often to p-aminoazobenzene (16.2%), p-phenylenediamine (14.1%), p-toluylenediamine (10.0%), followed by 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (8.5%), Disperse Orange 3 (8.4%) and p-aminophenol (3.1%). Direct P-functionalization of azobenzene by a cationic phosphidozirconocene complex.

International audience; We report that the cationic phosphidozirconocene complex [(eta(5)-C5H5)(2)Zr(PCy2)][CH3B(C6F5)(3)] (II) reacts with azobenzene, resulting in the expedient formation of Zr complex (2) bound to a tridentate PNN ligand. This reaction proceeds by a mechanism of cooperative nucleophilic substitution of hydrogen. The intermediate sigma(H) adduct (1) has been characterized by NMR spectroscopy.
