‘The Baltic environment, food and health: from habits to awareness – FOODWEB’ is a project that aims to raise public awareness about the links between food quality and its origin, focusing on the Baltic Sea and its surroundings. Cultivation of food for humans and related production activities can impact negatively on the Baltic Sea, and aquatic food products from the Baltic Sea may cause problems to humans as a result of toxins in the marine environment. In the paper the authors examined key Latvian economy indicators, specifically focusing on trends in development of aviation industry development. In particular, also attention was paid to passengers and cargo volume transportation dynamics, as well as to RIGA International Airport Development Plan through the year 2036. The authors compared operations of RIGA International Airport with available data from other leading Baltic Sea Region airports, specifically within 300 kilometres zone. Abstract In many parts of the world coastal waters with anthropogenic eutrophication have experienced a gradual depletion of dissolved silica (DSi) stocks. This could put pressure on spring bloom diatom populations, e.g. by limiting the intensity of blooms or by causing shifts in species composition. In addition, eutrophication driven enhanced diatom growth is responsible for the redistribution of DSi from the water phase to the sediments, and changes in the growth conditions may be reflected in the sediment diatom stratigraphy. The rate of anthropogenic mobilization of heavy metals is higher than the natural supply to the sedimentary environments. I n rivers, lakes and various other terrestrial areas, the drastic increase of heavy metals has been accredited to human activity (Tyler 1972). Erlenkeuser et al. (1974) suggest that Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu in the upper sediment sequence of sediment cores collected from Kiel Bight in the Baltic Sea, are the result of fossil fuel use in industries. The studies of calanoid copepod Limnocalanus macrurus feeding rates and mating related to vertical migration were conducted in October 2005 in the Bothnian Sea. The monocyclic copepod Limnocalanus macrurus develops mostly to adult and larger copepodites stages in autumn and these stages were investigated. Bothnian Sea is a brackish-water basin in Baltic Sea with comparatively big depth therefore Limnocalanus macrurus which prefer to live in deep and cold water is more abundant in this Baltic Sea part. Environmentally driven changes in Baltic salmon oxidative status during marine migration.

The fitness and recruitment of fish stocks can be markedly affected by environmental disturbances including global warming, eutrophication and contamination. Understanding the effects of environmental stressors on salmon physiology during marine residence is of a global concern as marine survival has decreased. We present a unique combination of physiological responses - antioxidant defence and oxidative damage biomarkers, stable isotopes and contaminant exposure biomarkers - measured from adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) collected at the Baltic Sea and studied in relation to environmental variables and fitness estimates.
