Background The expression and localization of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) pathway proteins in different compartments of the lower airways of patients with stable COPD is unclear. We aimed to determine TGF-β pathway protein expression in patients with stable COPD. Methods The expression and localization of TGF-β pathway components was measured in the bronchial mucosa and peripheral lungs of patients with stable COPD (n = 44), control smokers with normal lung function (n = 24), and control nonsmoking subjects (n = 11) using immunohistochemical analysis. Results TGF-β1, TGF-β3, and connective tissue growth factor expression were significantly decreased in the bronchiolar epithelium, w…

Il bambino “sovrano” e l’adulto “irrisolto”. Tempi di crescita familiare ed educazione

2019

“Sovereign” child, apathetic adolescents, kidult, young adult, “unresolved” adult, forms of “pseudo-integrity” of the elderly are some expressions that show phenomena that are radically changing, along with the identity of the family, times of growth of the different generations, and the sense of belonging to a historical community. Profound transformations involved in the transitions of the family life cycle are also visible in the disappearance of some phases of family growth in favor of others. Through a pedagogical reflection on these phenomena, this contribution aims to underline some aspects of the ways of understanding education and growth in the family of late modernity, for the pur…

Pro-and anti-fibrotic molecule balance in the bronchial mucosa of stable COPD patients

2015

Background: The mechanisms of inducing fibrotic events and remodeling in the airways of COPD are incompletely studied. Objectives: To investigate the expression of cytokines involved in the pro- and anti-fibrotic events in stable COPD. Methods: Expression of CTGF, TGFβ1-2-3, TGFβRI, TGFβRII, LTBP-1, TRAP-1, BAMBI, PP2Cα, Smad2-3-6-7, pSmad2, pSmad3, pro-collagen-I and collagen-I was measured in the bronchial mucosa using immunohistochemistry and RT-qPCR. Results: TGFβ1 was increased in the epithelium and TGFβ3 in the submucosa of healthy smokers and mild/moderate COPD compared to healthy non-smokers. In all smokers and patients with COPD TGFβ3+ cells in the submucosa correlated significantl…

Comparative study of a whole-cell pertussis vaccine and a recombinant acellular pertussis vaccine.

1994

The safety and immunogenicity of an acellular pertussis vaccine containing the genetically detoxified pertussis toxin PT-9K/129C, filamentous hemagglutinin, and pertactin, together with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, were compared with those of a whole-cell pertussis component-diphtheria-tetanus vaccine. Four hundred eighty infants were enrolled into this prospective, multicenter, double-blind study. Each infant was randomly given three doses of one of the two vaccines at 2, 4, and 6 months of age. Both local and systemic adverse reactions, reported within 48 hours and 7 days of each injection, were less frequent after the acellular vaccine than after the whole-cell vaccine. The enzyme-lin…
