Background: Conversion to a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) has been advocated after the failure of vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG). The aim of this study was to analyze the differences in anthropometric and nutritional parameters between patients with VBG and those converted to RYGBP. Six specimens of Anoplotrupes stercorosus (Coleoptera Scarabaeoidea: Geotrupidae) were analysed using conventional staining, banding techniques and fluorescent in situ hybridization with a ribosomal probe (rDNA FISH). Type V aplasia cutis congenita in a preterm newborn successfully resolved

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) associated with fetus papyraceus is a rare subtype of aplasia cutis categorized as type V in Frieden's classification. It is characterized by stellate lesions in a symmetrical distribution over the trunk and proximal extremities. Conservative treatment is recommended, but there is not a well-defined therapeutic protocol. We report the case of a type V ACC in a preterm male newborn with lesions on the trunk and scalp successfully treated with topical 1% silver sulfadiazine and petrolatum gauze with an excellent evolution. This case associates a severe affectation of the scalp which represents a rare variant of type V ACC.

Spermatocyte chromosome analysis of Helicella virgata (Pulmonata: Helicidae): silver-stained and C-banded chromosomes.

Chromosome numbers of the snail Helicella virgata from the fields of Castellammare del Golfo (Sicily) are n = 26 and 2n = 52. Silver-staining analyses of testicular cells suggest that both mitotic and meiotic chromosomes are involved in nucleolus organization. A within-individual variability in NOR-banding pattern is present in each of the 20 specimens analyzed.

Introducing rabbits as genetic materials into institutes for experimental animals from other colonies is essential for biomedical research. Currently, it is inconvenient to transport live rabbits from abroad, since they suffer from stress, are prone to accidents and must be inspected, as well as endure quarantine during the often long journey. To overcome these limitations of live animals, we transported sperm cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Translocations involving the short arms of the X and Y chromosomes are uncommon and are often associated with anomalies in gonadal development. Segmental duplications of the X chromosome interfere with the formation of the testis in patients with a 46,XY karyotype. The gene products located within the duplicated segment, when present in double dose, may affect on male sex development. We report on a fetus with karyotype 46,XY,der (14)t(X;14) (p10;p10)dn. Background and purpose: Tumefactive multiple sclerosis (TuMS) (i.e., MS onset presenting with tumefactive demyelinating lesions [TDLs]) is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We performed a multicentre retrospective study to describe the clinical characteristics and the prognostic factors of TuMS. Methods: One hundred two TuMS patients were included in this retrospective study. Demographic, clinical, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), laboratory data and treatment choices were collected. The decision to search or not to search for work is usually considered a purely individual choice. However, this is a simplistic view, which ignores important structural and situational aspects of job search behaviour. This article discusses the reasons why long-term unemployed youth in Finland give up their search for work or a student place. The data comprise 28 life course interviews that were analysed by means of content analysis. The data show that young people’s job seeking behaviour is greatly influenced by how they view their labour market position and prospects.
