Normal metal - insulator - superconductor thermometers and coolers with titanium-gold bilayer as the normal metal

2018

We have fabricated superconductor - insulator - normal metal - insulator - superconductor (SINIS) tunnel junctions in which Al acts as the superconductor, AlOx is the insulator, and the normal metal consists of a thin Ti layer (5 nm) covered with a thicker Au layer (40 nm). We have characterized the junctions by measuring their current-voltage curves between 60 mK and 750 mK. For comparison, the same measurements have been performed for a SINIS junction pair whose normal metal is Cu. The Ti-Au bilayer decreases the SINIS tunneling resistance by an order of magnitude compared to junctions where Cu is used as normal metal, made with the same oxidation parameters. The Ti-Au devices are much mo…

Theoretical simulations of regular and defective aluminium nitride nanotubes

2007

For theoretical simulation on AlN nanotubes (NTs) of different chiralities (armchair-and zigzag-type) and uniform diameters, we have considered their single-walled (SW) 1D periodic models. For this aim, we have performed ab initio DFT calculations on AlN SW NTs using formalism of the localized Gaussian-type atomic functions as implemented in CRYSTAL-03 computer code. We have shown that the smaller the diameter of AlN single-walled nanotube is, the closer its electronic and structural properties to AlN bulk. We have analysed an influence of N vacancies (neutral F centres) created by either soft irradiation of nanotubes or under experimental conditions of their growth, on the atomic and elect…

Millimeter wave absorption by confined acoustic modes in CdSe/CdTe core-shell quantum dots

2007

International audience; Taking advantage of the specific core-shell charge separation structure in the CdSe/CdTe core-shell Type-II quantum dots (QDs), we experimentally observed the resonant-enhanced dipolar interaction between millimeter-wave (MMW) photons and their corresponding (l = 1) confined acoustic phonons. With proper choice of size, the absorption band can be tuned to desired frequency of MMW imaging. Exploiting this characteristic absorption, in a fiber-scanned MMW imaging system, we demonstrated the feasibility of CdSe/CdTe QDs as the contrast agents of MMW imaging.

High-pressure study of the aurophilic topological Dirac material AuI

2022

We endeavour to explore the high-pressure study in the aurophilic AuI within the state-of-the-art of first principles. The impediment of expressing precise ground-state features of aurophilic compounds that had afflicted prior theoretical research has been resolved by incorporating van der Waals corrections (vdw). Mechanical and dynamical stability are ensured at ambient using the computed elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves. The dynamical instability is triggered by the application of pressure in AuI, as evidenced by the softening of an acoustic mode (Eu) at ∼7 GPa. Non-adherence of estimated elastic constants to the Born stability criterion at this pressure illustrates the syst…

Comparison of ZrO2:Y nanocrystals and macroscopic single crystal luminescence

2007

The luminescence spectra of a tetragonally structured ZrO2:Y single crystal and nanocrystals were compared. It was found that the number of luminescence centers contributed to the spectra. The excitation of luminescence within the band gap region led to different luminescence spectra for the single crystal and nanocrystal samples, whereas recombinative luminescence spectra were the same for both samples. The origin of this difference is that in the nanocrystals, even under excitation within the band gap, charge carriers were created. Zirconium- oxygen complexes distorted by intrinsic defects were proposed to be the luminescence centres responsible for the wide luminescence band observed.

High Resolution Study of the v1 + 2v2 −v2 and 2v2 + v3 − v2 ”Hot” Bands and Ro-Vibrational Re-Analysis of the v1 + v2/v2 + v3/3v3 Poliad of the SO2 M…

2010

The main goal of the present study was to analyse rotational stuctures of two excited vibrational states, (120) and (021). Because both the band, v1+2v2 and 2v2+v3 one are extremally weak, a special efforts were faired to record very weak hot bands, v1+2v2−v2 and 2v2+v3−v2.Both of those bands are located in the region of considerably more stronger combinational bands, v1 + v2 and v2 + v3. On that reason, as the first step of analysis, we made assignments of transitions belonging to these v1 + v2 and v2 + v3 bands. As the result of analysis, we were able to assign three times more transitions to the bands v1 + v2 and v2 + v3 than it was known in the before literature. After "cleaning" the ex…

Additive effects of enhanced ambient ultraviolet B radiation and increased temperature on immune function, growth and physiological condition of juve…

2009

Climate change models predict increased ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation levels due to stratospheric ozone depletion and global warming. In order to study the impact of these two environmental stressors acting simultaneously on the physiology of fish, Atlantic salmon parr were exposed, for 8 weeks in outdoor tanks, to different combinations of UVB radiation (depleted and enhanced) and temperature (standard rearing temperature of 14 °C or 19 °C). The immune function (plasma IgM, lysozyme activity and complement bacteriolytic activity), growth (body weight) and physiological condition (haematocrit and plasma protein concentration) of the fish were determined. Increased UVB level, regardless of w…

Xyloglucan-based hydrogel films for the design of "smart" bandages

2016

A chronic wound is a wound that does not heal in an orderly set of stages and in a predictable amount of time the way most wounds do. Chronic wounds mostly affect people over the age of 60, but a significant proportion is becoming radiation induced chronic wounds caused by cancer radiotherapy. Hydrogels are often used as dressings in the management of a variety of wounds. These materials can help to maintain a moist wound environment, promote natural debridement, hydrate necrotic tissue, absorb slough and exudates. We are developing hydrogel dressings that can enable constant monitoring of selected key parameters through embedded radio-sensors, providing information on the progress of the re…

Structure and vibrational features of the protic ionic liquid 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undec-7-ene-8-ium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide, [DBUH][TF…

2022

Abstract The Protic Ionic Liquid (PIL) formed by neutralization of the super-strong base 1,7-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) with the super-strong acid bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide (TFSI), indicated as [DBUH][TFSI], has been investigated. Its chemical physical properties and structural features have been explored using a synergy of experimental and computational tools. Molecular Dynamics-rationalised X-ray diffraction patterns highlight the major role played by hydrogen bonding (HB) in affecting morphology in this PIL. A comparison between HB features in this and in related PILs has been presented, on the base of far-IR experiments and DFT analysis. Indications of a weaker HB in…
