GekkoFS — A Temporary Burst Buffer File System for HPC Applications
2020
Many scientific fields increasingly use high-performance computing (HPC) to process and analyze massive amounts of experimental data while storage systems in today’s HPC environments have to cope with new access patterns. These patterns include many metadata operations, small I/O requests, or randomized file I/O, while general-purpose parallel file systems have been optimized for sequential shared access to large files. Burst buffer file systems create a separate file system that applications can use to store temporary data. They aggregate node-local storage available within the compute nodes or use dedicated SSD clusters and offer a peak bandwidth higher than that of the backend parallel f…
Spectroscopic markers of the T-R quaternary transition in human hemoglobin
2004
High resolution study of AsHD2: Ground state and the three bending fundamental bands v(3), v(4), and v(6)
2006
International audience; For the first time the infrared spectrum of the AsHD2 molecule has been measured in the region of the bending fundamental bands v(3), v(4), and v(6) on a Fourier transform spectrometer with a resolution of 0.0024 cm(-1) and analyzed. More than 5500 transitions with J(max) = 26 have been assigned and used both to obtain "ground state combination differences" and for the determination of upper state ro-vibrational energies of the triad (001000), (000100), and (000001). Rotational parameters including centrifugal distortion coefficients up to octic terms of the ground vibrational state were calculated by fitting more than 500 "ground state combination differences" with …
New data on the mercury antimony mineral shakhovite: Chemical composition, unit cell and crystal structure
1982
A new investigation of the mercury antimony mineral shakhovite yielded space groupIm witha=4.871(1),b=15.098(3),c=5,433(1) A and β=98.86(2)°. The determination of the crystal structure gave a cell content of Hg8Sb2O12. Since the presence of Hg2-groups indicates that shakhovite is a pure Hg(1) compound and the infrared spectrum shows an absorption band at 3440 cm−1 which is due to the OH-stretching frequency, it is assumed that there are six oxygen atoms and six OH-groups in the unit cell. Thus the chemical formula of shakhovite reads Hg4Sb(OH)3O3 with two formula units per unit cell. The Hg−Hg distance in the Hg2-group is 2.543 A, each mercury atom has a close oxygen neighbour at 2.160 and …
Copper(II) complexes of quinoline polyazamacrocyclic scorpiand-type ligands: X-ray, equilibrium and kinetic studies
2012
The formation of Cu(II) complexes with two isomeric quinoline-containing scorpiand-type ligands has been studied. The ligands have a tetraazapyridinophane core appended with an ethylamino tail including 2-quinoline (L1) or 4-quinoline (L2) functionalities. Potentiometric studies indicate the formation of stable CuL(2+) species with both ligands, the L1 complex being 3-4 log units more stable than the L2 complex. The crystal structure of [Cu(L1)](ClO(4))(2)·H(2)O shows that the coordination geometry around the Cu(2+) ions is distorted octahedral with significant axial elongation; the four Cu-N distances in the equatorial plane vary from 1.976 to 2.183 Å, while the axial distances are of 2.27…
Modulated Crystal Structure and Electronic Properties of Semiconductor Cu47Si91P144
2000
Crystals of the copper silicon phosphide were synthesized by the iodine gas transport technique. The x-ray single crystal methods revealed a big superstructure with the lattice parameters a = b = 44.510 and c = 20.772 A and a basic tetragonal substructure with a = 3.7092 and c = 5.1930 A. Analysis of the intensities showed that the superstructure has a 1/2,1/2,1/2 tetragonal substructure with a = 22.255 and c = 10.386 A. This 1/2,1/2,1/2 substructure (Cu47Si91P144) and the basic tetragonal structure (Cu0.71Si1.29P2) were solved by the direct methods and refined in the I4m2 space group. The phosphide is a semiconductor with a small energy gap of 0.0269(1) eV. The electrical properties are co…
Pressure-dependent modifications in the optical and electronic properties of Fe(IO3)3: the role of Fe 3d and I 5p lone–pair electrons
2021
We have determined by means of optical-absorption experiments that Fe(IO3)3 is an indirect band-gap material with a band-gap energy of 2.1 eV. This makes this compound the iodate with the smallest band gap. We also found that under compression the band-gap energy has an unusual non-linear pressure dependence, which is followed by an abrupt and discontinuous decrease of the band gap at 24 GPa. The observed behavior is explained by means of density-functional calculations, which show that the behavior of the band gap is governed by the combined influence of Fe 4d and I 5p lone pair electrons. In addition, the abrupt decrease of the band-gap energy at 24 GPa is a consequence of a first-order s…
Joint Distribution of Polarization-Multiplexed UWB and WiMAX Radio in PON
2009
[EN] In this paper, the feasibility of the joint distribution of ultra-wideband (UWB) and WIMAX wireless using polarization multiplexing as a coexistence technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated within the framework of passive optical networks (PON). Four single- and orthogonal-polarization multiplexing schemes are studied targeting to reduce the mutual interference when UWB and WiMAX are distributed jointly through standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without transmission impairments compensation techniques and amplification. Experimental results indicate successful transmission up to 25 km, in SSMF exceeding the range in typical PON deployments. The radio link penalty introduced…

What are the ethical dimensions in the profession of intensive care specialist?
2017
International audience; Two essential components of the profession of a medical doctor are the constant review of the patient's therapeutic project, and collaboration between healthcare professionals. The profession of intensive care unit (ICU) physician goes further in terms of responsibility, vis-à-vis the intensive treatments dispensed to the patients, and the physician's responsibilities towards the patient's family and the caregiving team, also bearing in mind that ICU care is costly in terms of human and financial resources. In this review, we address the profession of ICU physician from the perspective of the ethical questions that arise constantly, focusing on the timeframe of the r…
