Atypical bartonella henselae neuroretinitis in an immunocompetent patient

We report a case of a 57-year-old immunocompetent male, admitted to our Department due to the loss of visual acuity to the right eye, occurred during the two weeks before the hospitalization, and hyperglycaemia. Our patient suffered from metabolic syndrome, characterized by visceral obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, arterial hypertension, complicated by proteinuria, and moderate grade hypertensive retinopathy. Surprisingly, and despite its many comorbidities, the final diagnosis was neuroretinitis by Bartonella henselae, without any other symptoms/signs of cat-scratch disease. Gene transfer agents (GTAs) randomly transfer short fragments of a bacterial genome. A novel putative GTA was recently discovered in the mouse-infecting bacterium Bartonella grahamii. Although GTAs are widespread in phylogenetically diverse bacteria, their role in evolution is largely unknown. Here, we present a comparative analysis of 16 Bartonella genomes ranging from 1.4 to 2.6 Mb in size, including six novel genomes from Bartonella isolated from a cow, two moose, two dogs, and a kangaroo. A phylogenetic tree inferred from 428 orthologous core genes indicates that the deadly human pathogen B. bacilliformis is related to the ruminant-adapted clade, rather than being the earliest diverging…
Molecular detection of Bartonella spp. in deer ked pupae, adult keds and moose blood in Finland

SUMMARYThe deer ked (Lipoptena cervi) is a haematophagous ectoparasite of cervids that harbours haemotrophic Bartonella. A prerequisite for the vector competence of the deer ked is the vertical transmission of the pathogen from the mother to its progeny and transstadial transmission from pupa to winged adult. We screened 1154 pupae and 59 pools of winged adult deer keds from different areas in Finland for Bartonella DNA using PCR. This article seeks to discuss some of the conclusions V. Llombart’s study arrives at about the figure and the meaning of the count of Campomanes in the context of absolutism during the second half of the XVIIIth century. More specifically, it calls in question the idea of an action led by a reforming possibilism, half way between the non-enlightenment and the revolution, which would permit, besides, to establish a doubtful line of continuity among some of the reforms of the second half of the century and the plans of Cádiz. It proposes, on the contrary, to reintroduce an interpretative logic not so attached to the schemes of “market” and “state”.
