e System and intrahepatocelullar HBcAG and HBsAG in HBsAG positive patients with liver diseases and healthy carriers.

1977

Patients with hepatitis-B surface antigen positive liver diseases and healthy carriers were studied for the presence of e-antigen and anti-e as well as for intrahepatocellular HBsAG and hepatitis-B core antigen. The e-antigen was demonstrated in 9 out of 12 patients with chronic perisitent hepatitis, in 15 out of 39 patients with chronic active hepatitis, in 3 out of 40 patients with acute type B hepatitis, and in 2 out of 9 patients with a protracted course of type B hepatitis. No e-antigen was found in healthy HBsAG carriers nor in patients with complete recovery from type B hepatitis one year after onset of the disease. Anti-e was detected in 24 out of 61 healthy HBsAG carriers with a no…

Rate of Cataract Formation in 343 Highly Myopic Eyes After Implantation of Three Types of Phakic Intraocular Lenses

2004

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility of using phakic intraocular lenses (PIOL) to treat high myopia, and evaluate the incidence of cataract, comparing three different lens types. METHODS: From 1989 to 2002, we implanted three different phakic intraocular lenses (PIOL) in 343 eyes of 232 patients; 231 eyes recieved an Ophtec (Worst-Fechner model, iris-claw), 89 an Adatomed (silicone posterior chamber), and 23 a Staar (posterior chamber, models V2, V3, V4). Average follow-up was 96.2 months for the Ophtec group, 31.5 months for the Adatomed group, and 19.3 months for Staar group. Eyes that subsequently developed cataract were studied for clinical evolution and had PIOL explantation and…

Effects of resveratrol on the ultrastructure of Botrytis cinerea conidia and biological significance in plant/pathogen interactions

2012

International audience; Many roles have been ascribed to stilbenes, namely as antimicrobial, deterrent or repellent compounds in plants, protecting them from attacks by fungi, bacteria, nematodes or herbivores, acting both as constitutive and active defense (phytoalexin) compounds. More recently, stilbenes (especially resveratrol and its derivatives) were acclaimed for their wondrous effects and wide range of purported healing and preventive powers as cardioprotective, antitumor, neuroprotective and antioxidant agents. Although there is a huge number of works concerning the role of resveratrol in human health, reports on the antifungal activity of this compound are still scarce. This study …

Sparsity-aware narrowband interference mitigation and subcarriers selection in OFDM-based cognitive radio networks

2016

In this paper, the performance of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing overlay cognitive radio network with subcarrier selection schemes is investigated. We propose three subcarrier selection techniques that reduce the level of interference at the primary base station based on collected channel state information from the different network nodes. Approximated outage probability expressions are also derived and verified by simulations for the different studied techniques. In addition, we propose and investigate a new approach for asynchronous narrowband interference (NBI) estimation and mitigation in cognitive radio networks. The proposed approach does not require prior knowledge of …

A new morphologic classification of the alveolar ridge after distraction osteogenesis in human patients. A 17 years retrospective case series study

2020

Background To perform a morphologic classification based on the results of bone augmentation after a distraction osteogenesis. Material and Methods Thirty-four (34) patients (24 women and 10 men; mean age, 47.1 years (SD=9.5); age range, 23 to 62 years) underwent a total of 42 alveolar ridge distractions before the placement of a total of 89 dental implants. Ridge bone morphology was evaluated as the main ordinal variable. Chi-squared, Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA one-way test were used. Results Category I (30.95%): consisted of wide alveolar rim and no bone defects Category II (28.57%): wide alveolar rim, lateral bone surface concavity. Category III (23.81%): narrow alveolar rim, lateral bone …

Screening of physical–chemical methods for removal of organic material, nitrogen and toxicity from low strength landfill leachates

2002

Physical-chemical methods have been suggested for the treatment of low strength municipal landfill leachates. Therefore, applicability of nanofiltration and air stripping were screened in laboratory-scale for the removal of organic matter, ammonia, and toxicity from low strength leachates (NH4-N 74-220 mg/l, chemical oxygen demand (COD) 190-920 mg O2/l, EC50 = 2-17% for Raphidocelis subcapitata). Ozonation was studied as well, but with the emphasis on enhancing biodegradability of leachates. Nanofiltration (25 degrees C) removed 52-66% of COD and 27-50% of ammonia, the latter indicating that ammonia may in part have been present as ammonium salt complexes. Biological pretreatment enhanced t…

Modification of the immune response against hepatitis B virus by the human immunodeficiency virus.

1989

Hepatitis B virus and the human immunodeficiency virus are similarly transmitted. Individuals with preexisting HIV infection have a higher chance to become HBsAg carriers than do anti-HIV negative persons. Cytotoxic T cells with specificity for HBcAg, that are under the control of HBcAg-specific helper T cells, are responsible for liver injury. There is good evidence that HIV infection lowers inflammatory activity, is associated with milder liver histology, high levels of viral replication and low seroconversion rates. In addition interferon alpha therapy is less effective in anti-HIV positive subjects. The immune response against HBsAg is helper T-cell dependent and vaccination against hep…

Identification of novel mutations in the ABCA12 gene, c.1857delA and c.5653–5655delTAT, causing harlequin ichthyosis

2013

Abstract Harlequin ichthyosis (HI) is a severe autosomal recessive developmental disorder of the skin that is frequently but not always fatal in the first few days of life. In HI, mutations in both ABCA12 gene alleles must have a severe impact on protein function and most mutations are truncating. The presence of at least one nontruncating mutation (predicting a residual protein function) usually causes a less severe congenital ichthyosis (lamellar ichthyosis or congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma). Here we report on a girl with severe HI diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound at 33 5/7 week gestation. Ultrasound findings included ectropion, eclabium, deformed nose, hands and feet, joint contra…

Wireless OFDM-OQAM with a small number of subcarriers

2008

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-OQAM) is a multicarrier signaling technique which trades off robustness for spectral efficiency when compared to conventional OFDM with a cyclic prefix. In this paper, a novel matrix model for passband OFDM-OQAM signaling with a small number of subcarriers over a multipath frequency selective fading channel is presented. Specifically, in OFDM-OQAM a frequency selective channel is divided into many smaller but still frequency selective overlapping channels, so approximating the frequency response of a subchannel by the channel frequency response sampled at the subcarrier frequency may be inadequa…
