A case of hypocalcemia

2011

Hypocalcemia is a common disorder in the elderly, affecting 10% of the elderly population as a whole, 18% of those in hospital and 36% of those in long-term care [1, 2]. Many conditions can lead to hypocalcemia in adults young and old, e.g. primary hypoparathyroidism, chronic renal failure, gastrointestinal diseases (such as celiac disease or Crohn’s disease), drugs (particularly diuretics, bisphosphonates and antiepileptics), acute pancreatitis and thyroid surgery. Rare causes of hypocalcemia include isolated vitamin 1.25(OH)D3 deficiency or vitamin 1.25(OH)D3 resistance. Another, often neglected cause of hypocalcemia relating to functional parathyroid deficiency is hypomagnesemia. Magnesi…

Der Sicherheitsgurt: Auswirkungen auf das Verletzungsmuster von Autoinsassen

1993

Since 1984 the law concerning safety belts has been implemented; this paper deals with the findings in 386 victims of motor accidents who were x-rayed between 1981 and 1989. Minor injuries have been ignored. The number of passengers wearing belts increased by 30% after 1984. The number of passenger injuries did not decrease. Injuries directly caused by the belts included a small number of fractures of clavicles, the sternum and ribs and one pelvic fracture, one serious abdominal injury with tearing of the mesenteric artery and one ruptured spleen. An indirect result of wearing seat belts was a marked increase in cervical whiplash injuries and some increase in thoracic vertebral fractures. N…

Duplexsonographie abdomineller Gefäße

1987

Duplex sonography is a non-invasive procedure which permits the determination of flow velocity and direction in visceral vessels. Results in 50 normals have shown that small arteries can be evaluated in about 50% of cases. The portal venous system can be demonstrated in all cases; average flow velocity and volume is 15.2 +/- 2.8 cm/s and 694 +/- 230 ml/min, corresponding with the values obtained by invasive methods. Clinical application for duplex examinations can be found in portal hypertension, varices, thromboses, aneurysms and transplant kidneys.

Radical Surgery in Children and Adolescents with Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Lower Urinary Tract Using Orthotopic Bladder Substitution and Heterotopic Ur…

2008

Abstract Purpose Children with rhabdomyosarcoma(RMS)of the bladder/prostate can be treated by radical or organ sparing surgery both in combination with chemotherapy ± radiation therapy. In this retrospective study we analyzed the outcome with special attention to radical surgery and urinary diversion (UD). Material and Methods 24/32 patients with RMS of the genitourinary tract had RMS of the bladder (n=14) or prostate (n=10). 8 patients were stage II, 11 stage III and 5 stage IV. In 18/24 with RMS of the bladder/prostate, radical surgery and urinary diversion was performed. 3 had chemotherapy only, 2 in combination with radiotherapy. One patient underwent partial cystectomy. For UD: uretero…

<title>Follow-up in patients with subdural haematomas using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)</title>

1998

Secondary haemorrhage is an important cause of brain injury following initial therapy of subdural haematoma (SDH). Early identification and treatment of secondary haemorrhage improves neurologic outcome. Near infrared light at a wavelength of 760 nm shows a high absorption for haemoglobin. The difference in absorbance of light ((Delta) OD) at the wavelength of 760 nm between both hemispheres is measured to detect SDH. We have prospectively studied 20 patients with the CT diagnosis of SDH using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Unilateral subdural haematomas were detected by NIRS in 15 out of 16 patients. Bilateral SDH were detected in 2 out of 3 patients. The median of (Delta) OD was reduc…
