Bowel ultrasonography in acute abdomen: beyond acute appendicitis.

2021

Acute abdomen is a common reason for consultation in the emergency department. A broad spectrum of entities, including diverse diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, can cause acute abdomen. Although computed tomography is the technique most widely used to evaluate acute abdomen in the emergency department, abdominal ultrasound is often performed first and allows bowel disease to be suspected. This article describes the ultrasound features of diverse bowel diseases that can cause acute abdomen, such as acute diverticulitis, bowel obstruction, gastrointestinal perforation, bowel ischemia, intraabdominal fat necrosis, and miscellaneous processes such as endometriosis, foreign bodies, or vasc…

Bilateral Iatrogenic Femoral Neuropathy

2015

Dear Editor, Postoperative femoral neuropathy is an uncommon complication associated with pelvic/abdominal surgery. The main mechanism underlying this neuropathy is stretching and/or prolonged compression of the nerve.1,2 The nerve compression can be caused by the self-retaining retractors that are sometimes used during surgery directly constricting the nerve against the pelvic sidewall and inducing ischemia.1 Symptoms of femoral neuropathy are weakness of ipsilateral hip flexion and knee extension, and sensory deficit on the anteromedial thigh. The prognosis is generally good, with partial or complete recovery being common. Postoperative femoral neuropathy is generally unilateral2,3,4; bil…

Stereotaktische Biopsie von Hirntumoren: Vergleich von CT-und MR-gesteuerter Berechnung

1989

An atypical clinical presentation of acute appendicitis in a young man with midgut malrotation

2007

Abstract Midgut malrotation occurs as a result of failure in normal intestinal rotation and fixation during early pregnancy. Pathological conditions reported in the literature involving midgut malrotation predominantly relate to infants and children. In adults malrotation is often revealed as an incidental finding on computed tomography (CT), or the associated altered anatomy can be the cause of atypical clinical symptoms of relatively common intestinal disorders. An unusual presentation of acute appendicitis, with fever and recurrent pain in left iliac fossa is reported. Underlying intestinal malrotation delayed the correct clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis. It was not until a CT sc…

Response to Letter Regarding Article, “The Inflammatory Hypothesis: Any Progress in Risk Stratification and Therapeutic Targets?”

2007

We thank Drs Ridker and Everett for their interest in our work,1 and we commend Ridker’s pioneering work describing an association between C-reactive protein (CRP) and the risk of myocardial infarction or stroke. Subsequent studies have both confirmed and refuted these original observations. The former studies “controlled” or “adjusted” for fewer other risk factors; when they did so, they dichotomized variables (a weaker approach) rather than using them as continuous variables. By contrast, the latter studies have incorporated adjustments for other markers (especially of abdominal obesity, because visceral fat …

Maschineller und manueller Bronchusverschlu ?ergebnisse einer konsekutiven untersuchungsserie

1989

After lobectomy and pneumonectomy in experimental evaluations stapled bronchial closures showed the lowest incidence of inflammatory reaction and the highest strength determined by leakage pressure compared with other suture material. A total of 233 lung resections-performed at Surgical University Clinic Koln-Lindenthal and the Clinic for General and Abdominal Surgery of the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz--were reviewed. Mechanical stapling reduced the rate of bronchopleural fistulas to 2.0% compared with 7.1% after manual suturing. In parallel, mortality related to bronchial stump leakage decreased to 0.7%. Main advantages of bronchial closure with staplers are the simplicity of thei…

Diagnostik und operative Therapie von Phäochromozytomen und Paragangliomen

2010

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are rare chromaffin tumours that represent an exceptional challenge for the surgeon because of the concomitant secretion of catecholamines. Recent findings on the genetic background of hereditary tumours have challenged the rule of the 10 % -tumour and significantly changed the requirements for preoperative work-up and surgical strategy. Early detection of malignant growth or multiple hereditary tumours is the goal of imaging techniques such as CT/MRI, (123)I-MIBG-(SPECT) or (18)F-DOPA-PET. However, in the absence of metastasis, reliable differentiation between -benign and malignant growth is preoperatively and even histopathologically rarely possible. A…
