Electrochemical treatment of aqueous solutions containing one or many organic pollutants at boron doped diamond anodes. Theoretical modeling and expe…
2012
The electrochemical oxidation of organics in water at boron doped diamonds (BDD) was experimentally investigated with the aim to discuss the correlations among the conversion of the pollutants and the instantaneous current efficiency ICE with the operative conditions. A simple theoretical model previously developed for the oxidation of oxalic acid accounting for the cases of mass transfer control, oxidation reaction control and mixed kinetic regimes was adopted and extended to challenge its predictive capability in the case of organics of different nature and in systems with more pollutants. A quite good agreement, between theoretical predictions and experimental data pertaining to the elec…
Investigations on isomerization and rearrangement of polycyclic arenes under oxidative conditions – Anodic versus reagent-mediated reactions
2019
Abstract Electro-organic conversions at an active molybdenum anode enable the formation of fused arenes. High chemoselectivity was achieved under anodic conditions, and a reagent-induced selectivity was observed by comparison with results of MoCl5-mediated reactions. Polycyclic arenes like phenanthrenes, triphenylenes, chrysenes, or helicenes were selectively obtained in yields up to 87% and in some cases unusual rearrangements were crucial for the product formation.
Membrane potential dye imaging of ventromedial hypothalamus neurons from adult mice to study glucose sensing
2013
Studies of neuronal activity are often performed using neurons from rodents less than 2 months of age due to the technical difficulties associated with increasing connective tissue and decreased neuronal viability that occur with age. Here, we describe a methodology for the dissociation of healthy hypothalamic neurons from adult-aged mice. The ability to study neurons from adult-aged mice allows the use of disease models that manifest at a later age and might be more developmentally accurate for certain studies. Fluorescence imaging of dissociated neurons can be used to study the activity of a population of neurons, as opposed to using electrophysiology to study a single neuron. This is par…

Resolvent estimates for the magnetic Schrödinger operator in dimensions $$\ge 2$$
2019
It is well known that the resolvent of the free Schr\"odinger operator on weighted $L^2$ spaces has norm decaying like $\lambda^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ at energy $\lambda$. There are several works proving analogous high-frequency estimates for magnetic Schr\"odinger operators, with large long or short range potentials, in dimensions $n \geq 3$. We prove that the same estimates remain valid in all dimensions $n \geq 2$.
Response of abducens internuclear neurons to axotomy in the adult cat
2000
The highly specific projection of abducens internuclear neurons on the medial rectus motoneurons of the oculomotor nucleus constitutes an optimal model for investigating the effects of axotomy in the central nervous system. We have analyzed the morphological changes induced by this lesion on both the cell bodies and the transected axons of abducens internuclear neurons in the adult cat. Axotomy was performed by the transection of the medial longitudinal fascicle. Cell counts of Nissl-stained material and calretinin-immunostained abducens internuclear neurons revealed no cell death by 3 months postaxotomy. Ultrastructural examination of these cells at 6, 14, 24, and 90 days postaxotomy showe…
Dynamics of molybdenum nano structure formation on the TiO2(110) surface: A kinetic Monte Carlo approach
2006
Abstract The rutile TiO 2 (1 1 0) surface is a highly anisotropic surface exhibiting “channels” delimited by oxygen rows. In previous experimental and theoretical DFT works we could identify the molybdenum adsorption sites. They are located inside the channels. Moreover, experimental studies have shown that during subsequent annealing after deposition, special molybdenum nano structures can be formed, especially two monolayer high pyramidal chains of atoms. In order to better understand the dynamics of nano structure formation, we present a kinetic Monte Carlo study on diffusion and adsorption of molybdenum atoms on a TiO 2 (1 1 0) surface. A quasi one-dimensional lattice gas model has been…

Evaluation of genetic variability and relatedness among eight Centaurea species through CAAT-box derived polymorphism (CBDP) and start codon targeted…
2021
Centaurea is a value-ultimate genus of medicinal plants showing high diversification levels, especially within the Mediterranean basin, and is still traditionally recognized as a complicated taxon. So far, few studies utilizing molecular markers have been done on Centaurea spp. towards a better dissection of its phylogeny and accurate assessment of genetic diversity. Here, two functional marker systems, start codon targeted (SCoT) polymorphism and CAAT box-derived polymorphism (CBDP), were implemented to assess the genetic diversity between eight wild Centaurea species in Egypt. Seventeen SCoT and 19 CBDP primers generated 197 and 179 bands, respectively. These primers generated 158 (80.2%)…
Inhibition of the HER2 pathway by n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids prevents breast cancer in fat-1 transgenic mice
2013
Overexpression of the tyrosine kinase receptor, ErbB2/HER2/Neu, occurs in 25–30% of invasive breast cancer (BC) with poor patient prognosis. Due to confounding factors, inconsistencies still remain regarding the protective effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on BC. We therefore evaluated whether fat-1 transgenic mice, endogenously synthesizing n-3 PUFAs from n-6 PUFAs, were protected against BC development, and we then aimed to study in vivo a mechanism potentially involved in such protection. E0771 BC cells were implanted into fat-1 and wild-type (WT) mice. After tumorigenesis examination, we analyzed the expression of proteins involved in the HER2 signaling pathway and lipi…
