Surface Reconstruction Based on a Descriptive Approach

The design of complex surfaces is generally hard to achieve. A natural method consists in the subdivision of the global surface into basic surface elements. The different elements are independently designed and then assembled together to represent the final surface. This method requires a classification and a formal description of the basic elements. This chapter presents a general framework for surface description, based on a constructive tree approach. In this tree the leaves are surface primitives and the nodes are constructive operators.

Maintenance of the intestinal tube in Caenorhabditis elegans: the role of the intermediate filament protein IFC-2.

The Caenorhabditis elegans intestinal lumen is surrounded by a dense cytoplasmic network that is laterally attached to the junctional complex and is referred to as the endotube. It localizes to the terminal web region which anchors the microvillar actin filament bundles and is particularly rich in intermediate filaments. To examine their role in intestinal morphogenesis and function, C. elegans reporter strains were generated expressing intestine-specific CFP-tagged intermediate filament polypeptide IFB-2. Approximately 30% of human drug targets are GPCRs, illustrating their pharmaceutical relevance. In contrast, the knowledge about invertebrate GPCRs is limited and is mainly restricted to model organisms like Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. Recent studies provide evidence that wild-type Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1(hWT)) might be an important factor in mutant SOD1-mediated amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In order to investigate its functional role in the pathogenesis of ALS, we designed fusion proteins of two SOD1 monomers linked by a polypeptide. We demonstrated that wild-type-like mutants, but not SOD1(G85R) homodimers, as well as mutant heterodimers including SOD1(G85R)-SOD1(hWT) display dismutase activity. Kif3a interacts with Dynactin subunit p150 Glued to organize centriole subdistal appendages.

Formation of cilia, microtubule-based structures that function in propulsion and sensation, requires Kif3a, a subunit of Kinesin II essential for intraflagellar transport (IFT). We have found that, Kif3a is also required to organize centrioles. In the absence of Kif3a, the subdistal appendages of centrioles are disorganized and lack p150(Glued) and Ninein. Consequently, microtubule anchoring, centriole cohesion and basal foot formation are abrogated by loss of Kif3a. Kif3a localizes to the mother centriole and interacts with the Dynactin subunit p150(Glued) . Charybdis glaucophylla (Asparagaceae), a new species from Sardinia, is described and illustrated. It is a diploid species with 2n = 20 chromosomes growing along the rocky coast, sandy dunes and mountain top in the south-western part of the island. Within the genus, this species results taxonomically well isolated and differentiated due to relevant morphological and phenological features, such as the leaves wide and short, very rigid and glaucous-pruinose, as well as the very late foliation (winter). It shows only some relationships with C. pancration for the whitish bulb tunics and the diploid chromosome complement, and with C. maura and C. aphylla due to the glaucous leaves.

Span Programs and Quantum Algorithms for st-Connectivity and Claw Detection

We introduce a span program that decides st-connectivity, and generalize the span program to develop quantum algorithms for several graph problems. First, we give an algorithm for st-connectivity that uses O(n d^{1/2}) quantum queries to the n x n adjacency matrix to decide if vertices s and t are connected, under the promise that they either are connected by a path of length at most d, or are disconnected. We also show that if T is a path, a star with two subdivided legs, or a subdivision of a claw, its presence as a subgraph in the input graph G can be detected with O(n) quantum queries to the adjacency matrix. Calculation of Splines Values by Subdivision

Assume, the samples of a spline \(S(t)\in {}^{p}\fancyscript{S}\) on the grid \(\mathbf{g} =\{k\}_{k\in \mathbb {Z}}\) are available: \(S(k)=y[k]\). Subdivision schemes are proposed to calculate the spline’s values at dyadic and triadic rational points \(S(k/2^m)\) and \(S(k/3^m)\). The SHA technique provides fast and explicit implementation of the subdivision for one- and two-dimensional periodic splines.
