Polynomial Smoothing Splines

2014

Interpolating splines is a perfect tool for approximation of a continuous-time signal \(f(t)\) in the case when samples \(x[k]=f(k),\;k\in \mathbb {Z}\) are available. However, frequently, the samples are corrupted by random noise. In such case, the so-called smoothing splines provide better approximation. In this chapter we describe periodic smoothing splines in one and two dimensions. The SHA technique provides explicit expression of such splines and enables us to derive optimal values of the regularization parameters.

A liquid-culture-based screening approach to study compounds affecting inflammatory processes in Caenorhabditis elegans

2021

Abstract Discovery of biomedical drugs makes use of novel biological sources of limited availability and is often in need of fast, small-scale initial screening approaches. Here, we present a screening, based on the reporter Caenorhabditis elegans strain IG692, for identification of anti- and pro-inflammatory properties. The elaborated workflow is based on cultivation in fluid and by this, allows fast and reproducible seeding in 96 well plates. LPS and dexamethasone served as reliable controls, comparable to application in the human cell line THP-1. This in vivo approach offers a first step for selection of e.g. natural products or for repurposing of compounds from drug libraries and by thi…

Light and electron microscopical demonstration of methylene blue accumulation sites in taste buds of fish and mouse after supravital dye injection

1995

Electron microscopical data regarding methylene blue staining of taste buds in the epithelia of the goldfish lip and the cirumvallate papilla of the mouse tongue after supravital dye application are presented for the first time. The ultrastructural details were compared with the corresponding light microscopical findings. The dye was applied in different concentrations by injection or in crystalline from directly to the surface of the tissues. Both methylene blue and tissue were simultaneously fixed by immersion in a paraformaldehyde-glutaraldehyde solution with the addition of phosphomolybdic acid. The ensuing dye precipitate was further stabilized by ammonium heptamolybdate. On the light …

saliva, a new Drosophila gene expressed in the embryonic salivary glands with homologues in plants and vertebrates.

1998

saliva (slv) transcription begins at the salivary gland placodes and continues on throughout development as salivary glands invaginate and reach their final location and morphology. saliva is located cytogenetically in 76A/B, and encodes a 226-amino-acid protein with four hydrophobic domains. A Northern blot detects a 1.6-kb transcript throughout development. Database similarity searches reveal homology to proteins from Caenorhabditis, Lilium, Medicago and mouse.

Modulation of immune responses of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Insecta: Coleoptera) induced by the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (N…

2014

Aim of this study was to investigate relationships between the red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) and the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (EPN); particularly, the work was focused on the immune response of the insect host in naive larvae and after infection with the EPN. Two main immunological processes have been addressed: the activity and modulation of host prophenoloxidase-phenoloxidase (proPO) system, involved in melanization of not-self and hemocytes recognition processes responsible for not-self encapsulation. Moreover, immune depressive and immune evasive strategies of the parasite have been investigated. Our results suggest that RPW possess a…

A structured filter for Markovian switching systems

2014

In this work, a new methodology for the structuring of multiple model estimation schemas is developed. The proposed filter is applied to the estimation and detection of active mode in dynamic systems. The discrete-time Markovian switching systems represented by several linear models, associated with a particular operating mode, are studied. Therefore, the main idea of this work is the subdivision of the models set to some subsets in order to improve the detection and estimation performances. Each subset is associated with sub-estimators based on models of the subset. In order to compute the global estimate and subset probabilities, a global estimator is proposed. Theoretical developments ba…

Métodos multiescala y aplicaciones: Esquemas de subdivisión

2015

Subdivision into i-packings and S-packing chromatic number of some lattices

2015

An ?$i$?-packing in a graph ?$G$? is a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than ?$i$?. For a nondecreasing sequence of integers ?$S=(s_1,s_2,\ldots)$?, the?$S$?-packing chromatic number of a graph ?$G$? is the least integer ?$k$? such that there exists a coloring of ?$G$? into ?$k$? colors where each set of vertices colored ?$i$?, ?$i=1,\ldots,k$?, is an ?$s_i$?-packing. This paper describes various subdivisions of an ?$i$?-packing into ?$j$?-packings ?$(j>i)$? for the hexagonal, square and triangular lattices. These results allow us to bound the ?$S$?-packing chromatic number for these graphs, with more precise bounds and exact values for sequences ?$S=(s_i,i \in \mathbb{N}^*)$?, …

Espaces tangents pour les formes auto-similaires

2013

The fractal geometry is a relatively new branch of mathematics that studies complex objects of non-integer dimensions. It finds applications in many branches of science as objects of such complex structure often poses interesting properties. In 1988 Barnsley presented the Iterative Func-tion System (IFS) model that allows modelling complex fractal shapes with only a limited set of contractive transformations. Later many other models were based on the IFS model such as Language-Restricted IFS,Projective IFS, Controlled IFS and Boundary Controlled IFS. The lastto allow modelling complex shapes with control points and specific topol-ogy. These models cover classical geometric models such as B-…
