Effects of clearance on thick, single-lap bolted joints using through-the-thickness measuring techniques

2011

Composite materials have increasingly become more common in ground transportation. As this occured thicker panels, as compared to composite panels used in aviation, become necessary in order to withstand high impact loads and day to day degradation. The effectiveness of these panels was often limited by the strength of the joint in which the panel was attached to the frame of the vehicle. Investigating methods of reducing strain concentrations within these joints would increase the effectiveness in using composite materials in ground transportation applications by increasing the load necessary for joint failure to occur. In this study, fiber optic strain gages were embedded in a composite p…

Numerical Analysis of Bearing Capacity of a Ring Footing on Geogrid Reinforced Sand

2021

A ring footing is found to be of practical importance in supporting symmetrical constructions for example silos, oil storage container etc. In the present paper, numerical analysis was carried out with explicit code FLAC3D 7.0 to investigate bearing capacity of a ring footing on geogrid reinforced sand. Effects of the ratio n of its inner/outer diameter (Di/D) of a ring footing, an optimum depth to lay the geogrid layer were examined. It was found that an intersection zone was developed in soil under inner-side (aisle) of ring footing, contributing to its bearing capacity. Substantial increase of bearing capacities could be realized if ratio n of a ring footing was around 0.6. Numerical res…

89 Zr-Immuno-Positron Emission Tomography in Oncology: State-of-the-Art 89 Zr Radiochemistry

2017

Contains fulltext : 181624.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Immuno-positron emission tomography (immunoPET) with (89)Zr-labeled antibodies has shown great potential in cancer imaging. It can provide important information about the pharmacokinetics and tumor-targeting properties of monoclonal antibodies and may help in anticipating on toxicity. Furthermore, it allows accurate dose planning for individualized radioimmunotherapy and may aid in patient selection and early-response monitoring for targeted therapies. The most commonly used chelator for (89)Zr is desferrioxamine (DFO). Preclinical studies have shown that DFO is not an ideal chelator because the (89)Zr-DFO complex is partly…

Muscle training for bone strength

2006

The main function of bone is to provide the mechanical integrity for locomotion and protection; accordingly, bone mass and architecture are adjusted to control the strains produced by mechanical load and muscular activity. Age-related patterns involve peak bone mass during growth, a plateau in adulthood, and bone loss during aging. The decline in bone mass and structural integrity results in increased risk of fractures, particularly in post-menopausal women. Athletes competing in strength and power events, such as weight-lifting and jumping, have superior bone mass and structure compared with their untrained counterparts in all age groups. Exercise seems to be most effective during rapid gr…

Synthesis and characterization of a series of alkyl-oxadiazolylpyridinium salts as perspective ionic liquids

2007

The synthesis of a series of 1,2,4-oxadiazolyl-N-methylpyridinium salts differing in the length and the position of the alkyl chain in the heterocyclic ring and the counter ions is reported. Some features of this new family of salts as perspective ionic liquids are described and the influence of the varying moieties in the modulation of the properties is discussed.

STATISTICAL MECHANICS OF NONCLASSIC SOLITONIC STRUCTURES-BEARING DNA SYSTEM

2011

We theoretically investigate the thermodynamic properties of modified oscillator chain proposed by Peyrard and Bishop. This model obtained by adding the quartic anharmonicity term to the coupling in the Peyrard–Bishop model is useful to model the coexistence of various phases of the molecule during the denaturation phenomenon. Within the model, the negative anharmonicity is responsible for the sharpness of calculated melting curves. We perform the transfer integral calculations to demonstrate that the model leads to a good agreement with known experimental results for DNA.

Vertical ground reaction force measurements and video measurements provide comparable estimates of distance moved by mice during artificial light and…

2011

Video-based measures of spontaneous activity of rodents are of interest in studying, e.g. physiology. However, video-based tracking methods typically require light. The purpose of the present study was to develop a video based method for tracking movements of mice during a dark period. The method was applied in comparing the dark and light period activities of mice. Ten male mice were used in the present study. The activity of the animals was monitored simultaneously with video and ground reaction force (GRF) recordings during consecutive 12h periods of artificial light and dark. Texture based background subtraction method was used to track the mouse from the video recording, while the weig…

The ISOLDE Silicon Ball

2003

The development of new spectroscopy devices with the capability of detecting charged particles and precisely determining their energy, angular distribution and nature has become one of the requirements for the investigation of weakly bound nuclei close to the particle driplines. With this aim the ISOLDE Silicon Ball is under construction. It is a charged particle spectroscopy device allowing for the investigation of the exotic nuclei produced at ISOLDE and at other similar facilities. Very high geometrical efficiency and broad energy range coverage are required. In order to allow for particle identification the simultaneous use of the Time of Flight and Pulse Shape Discrimination techniques…

INFLUENCE OF UNCERTAINTIES ON PD TUNING

2013

The aim of this work is to present a method for tuning the parameters of PD controller under the influences of the uncertainties, in order to stabilize the position of a rotor supported by active magnetic bearings (AMBs). The uncertainties are relative to mass, transverse and polar moment of inertia of the rotor. The introduction of the uncertainties is due to an incomplete modeled dynamic of the system or in the case the system being subjected to a parametric variation. The presence of the uncertainties produces a set of differences among the values of the output. Poles displacement method is used to reach the asymptotically stability condition characterized by a periodic oscillation durin…

Non-smooth modelling of billiard- and superbilliard-ball collisions

2008

Abstract A description of billiard-ball collisions using a ‘discontinuous’ model is presented considering a two-step situation corresponding to the ball–ball interaction followed by ball-supporting surface interaction. It is applied to the inelastic impact of a cue ball having arbitrary pivotment and ‘English’ spins against an object ball initially at rest. This formulation provides a simplified approximation to the ‘continuous’ models of impact and considers two different regimes of impact: gross slip, and slip–stick, described in terms of coefficients of friction and restitution. As a result, the angles of scattering of the balls just after the impact (post-collision angles) and when the …
