An observational, multicenter, retrospective, Italian Sarcoma Group (ISG) study of trabectedin in patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS).
2018
e23502Background: Trabectedin (T) is approved for patients (pts) with STS after failure of anthracyclines (A) and ifosfamide (I), or pts unsuited to receive AI. ISG performed a retrospective study ...
BMI as a risk factor for toxicities in patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma treated with trabectedin.
2017
e22517 Background: Since the first steps of its clinical development, trabectedin was noticed to be extremely active against myxoid liposarcoma (MLS), whose pathogenesis seems to be associated to the presence of the t(12;16)(q13;p11) translocation, resulting in the expression of FUS-DDIT3 fusion genes. Therefore, the drug seems to induce a maturation of MLS lipoblasts, with transition of the residual spindle non-lipogenic cells into mature vacuolated lipoblasts. This effect could be prevented by the increase of leptin circulating levels in obese patients. For these reasons we designed this retrospective analysis in order to evaluate the BMI status (measure of total adipose content) as a pr…
Malignancy Risk Models for Oral Lesions
2013
Objectives: The aim of this work was to assess risk habits, clinical and cellular phenotypes and TP53 DNA changes in oral mucosa samples from patients with Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMD), in order to create models that enable genotypic and phenotypic patterns to be obtained that determine the risk of lesions becoming malignant. Study Design: Clinical phenotypes, family history of cancer and risk habits were collected in clinical histories. TP53 gene mutation and morphometric-morphological features were studied, and multivariate models were applied. Three groups were estabished: a) oral cancer (OC) group (n=10), b) OPMD group (n=10), and c) control group (n=8). Results: An avera…
Dissipative soliton resonance in a full polarization-maintaining fiber ring laser at different values of dispersion
2016
We investigated the dissipative solitons resonance in an ytterbium-doped fiber ring laser in which all the elements are polarization maintaining (PM). A semiconductor saturable absorber mirror was used as a mode-locker. The cavity included a normal dispersion single-mode fiber (SMF) and an anomalous dispersion photonic crystal fiber. The change of the length of the PM SMF allows the variation of the net-normal dispersion of the cavity in the range from 0.022 ps2 to 0.262 ps2. As the absolute value of the net-normal dispersion increases from 0.022 ps2 to 0.21 ps2, a square-shaped single pulse transformed to a single right-angle trapezoid-shaped pulse, and, at the dispersion of 0.262 ps2, to …

High-speed and high-resolution interrogation of FBG sensors using wavelength-to-time mapping and Gaussian filters
2019
In this work we report a novel intensity-based technique for simultaneous high-speed and high-resolution interrogation of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The method uses a couple of intensity Gaussian filters and the dispersion-induced wavelength-to-time mapping effect. The Bragg wavelength is retrieved by means of the amplitude comparison between the two filtered grating spectrums, which are mapped into a time-domain waveform. In this way, measurement distortions arising from residual power due to the grating sidelobes are completely avoided, and the wavelength measurement range is considerably extended with respect to the previously proposed schemes. We present the mathematical backgro…
The taint of torture and the brazilian legal system
2019
In Brazil, the practice of torture intertwines deeply with its own history. The literature on the subject has had a greater intensification on its registers during the Dictatorial Regime (1964 to 1985). In spite of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, Brazil only makes efforts to investigate the crimes of torture of this period to comply with the provisions of the United Nations in 2011. Within this scenario, the NationalTruth Commission (Law 12.528, of November 2011) was created with the purpose of clarifying the facts and circumstances of cases concerning human rights violations, as well as the Law on Access to Information (Law 12.527 of November 2011), which have regulated the constitutio…
Lotus spp: biotechnological strategies to improve the bioeconomy of lowlands in the Salado River Basin (Argentina)
2016
The Salado River Basin region is the most important livestock breeding area in Argentina, wherethe Lotus species has been traditionally cultivated as forages. Nearly 60% of their land surface is dominated by salt-affected soils with severe constraints for crop cultivation. In order to cope with that limitation, farmers have utilized species such as non-native L. tenuis (ex- Lotus glaber), which shows a very good adaptation. As a result, inter-seeding of L. tenuis has been proposed as a strategy of choice for improving forage production in marginal areas. The increase in soil quality by these means is achieved by an increment of the organic matter content, improvement of soil fertility as we…
In t…
Manipulating the alpha level cannot cure significance testing
2018
We argue that making accept/reject decisions on scientific hypotheses, including a recent call for changing the canonical alpha level from p = 0.05 to p = 0.005, is deleterious for the finding of new discoveries and the progress of science. Given that blanket and variable alpha levels both are problematic, it is sensible to dispense with significance testing altogether. There are alternatives that address study design and sample size much more directly than significance testing does; but none of the statistical tools should be taken as the new magic method giving clear-cut mechanical answers. Inference should not be based on single studies at all, but on cumulative evidence from multiple in…
