The location of an international logistics center in Poland as a part of The One Belt One Road Initiative

2019

Background: The One Belt One Road initiative opens up many development opportunities for Central and Eastern European countries, some related to the possible construction of a logistics center in this area. For Poland, such an investment would also bring many benefits, not only due to infrastructure development, but also through acceleration of economic growth and job creation. In this context, the crucial issue becomes, what should be the role of an international logistics center and where should it be located. Due to the novelty of the subject, there is a shortcoming of scientific papers related to this issue. The scientific goal of the present paper is to fulfill the gap and to address …

African, southern Indian and South American cratons were not part of the Rodinia supercontinent: evidence from field relationships and geochronology

2003

We discuss the question whether the late Mesoproterozoic and early Neoproterozoic rocks of eastern, central and southern Africa, Madagascar, southern India, Sri Lanka and South America have played any role in the formation and dispersal of the supercontinent Rodinia, believed to have existed between about 1000 and 750 Ma ago. First, there is little evidence for the production of significant volumes of ~1.4–1.0 Ga (Kibaran or Grenvillian age) continental crust in the Mozambique belt (MB) of East Africa, except, perhaps, in parts of northern Mozambique. This is also valid for most terranes related to West Gondwana, which are made up of basement rocks older than Mesoproterozoic, reworked in th…

Milton’s conjecture on the regularity of solutions to isotropic equations

2003

Abstract We present examples showing that the threshold for the integrability of the gradient of solutions to isotropic equations is 2K/(K−1). The main tools are p-laminates and Beltrami Operators.

V-Belt Winding along Archimedean Spirals During the Variator Speed Ratio Shift

2010

Starting from a previous model for the shift mechanics of rubber belt variators, this lecture elaborates practical design formulas for the torque and the axial thrust making use of the very close resemblance of the belt path to a linear spiral of Archimedes along a large part of the arc of contact. In addition, as an alternative to the modern calculus tools, it is shown how the drive variables can be equally calculated applying some propositions of Archimedes’ classical treatise πeρί ‘eλίκων (On Spirals).

The association between respiratory tract infection incidence and localised meningitis epidemics: an analysis of high-resolution surveillance data fr…

2017

AbstractMeningococcal meningitis epidemics in the African meningitis belt consist of localised meningitis epidemics (LME) that reach attack proportions of 1% within a few weeks. A meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine was introduced in meningitis belt countries from 2010 on, but LME due to other serogroups continue to occur. The mechanisms underlying LME are poorly understood, but an association with respiratory pathogens has been hypothesised. We analysed national routine surveillance data in high spatial resolution (health centre level) from 13 districts in Burkina Faso, 2004–2014. We defined LME as a weekly incidence rate of suspected meningitis ≥75 per 100,000 during ≥2 weeks; and…

OSSOS XVIII: Constraining migration models with the 2:1 resonance using the Outer Solar System Origins Survey

2019

Resonant dynamics plays a significant role in the past evolution and current state of our outer Solar System. The population ratios and spatial distribution of Neptune's resonant populations are direct clues to understanding the history of our planetary system. The orbital structure of the objects in Neptune's 2:1 mean-motion resonance (\emph{twotinos}) has the potential to be a tracer of planetary migration processes. Different migration processes produce distinct architectures, recognizable by well-characterized surveys. However, previous characterized surveys only discovered a few twotinos, making it impossible to model the intrinsic twotino population. With a well-designed cadence and n…

Multifractal fits to the observed main belt asteroid distribution

2002

Dohnanyi's (1969) theory predicts that a collisional system such as the asteroidal population of the main belt should rapidly relax to a power-law stationary size distribution of the kind $N(m)\propto m^{-\alpha}$, with $\alpha$ very close to 11/6, provided all the collisional response parameters are independent on size. The actual asteroid belt distribution at observable sizes, instead, does not exhibit such a simple fractal size distribution. We investigate in this work the possibility that the corresponding cumulative distribution may be instead fairly fitted by multifractal distributions. This multifractal behavior, in contrast with the Dohnany fractal distribution, is related to the re…

Full Sliding “Adhesive-Like” Contact of V-Belts

2002

Abstract Analysis of power transmission in a belt drive consisting of e. g. two pulleys might be treated as a boundary value problem. Tight side tension FT, slack side tension FS and the wrap angle α are the three natural boundary conditions. In the literature, theories are developed where seating and unseating as well as the power transmitting part of the contact are considered. The solutions presented so far don’t fulfil the boundary conditions properly, since a certain tension ratio FT/FS is associated with a certain contact angle and not an a priori specified one. It appears that a new type of full sliding solution must be introduced to handle the boundary condition problem. During part…

Chapter 5.2 The Ancient Gneiss Complex of Swaziland and Environs: Record of Early Archean Crustal Evolution in Southern Africa

2007

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the record of early Archean crustal evolution in Southern Africa. Southern Africa preserves one of the most complete and detailed records of early Precambrian crustal evolution, and the Ancient Gneiss Complex (AGC) of Swaziland and the related rocks along the southern margin of the 3.5–3.2 Ga Barberton Greenstone Belt (BGB) have played a prominent role in models for the early evolution of continental crust. The AGC is separated from the BGB by a large granitoid sheet-like pluton some 3 Ga in age and known as the Mpuluzi Batholith. In northwest Swaziland, however, small inliers of AGC gneisses occur in faulted and sheared contact with BGB rocks, and t…
