New configurations of the glassblock have been designed at the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo in order to reduce its U value responding to the latest national and international regulation limits for the thermal insulation of the buildings with glass façades. One of these new configurations consists in the insertion of a special plastic "belt" between the two glass shells composing the glassblock, which have to be glued to it (cold assembly); the plastic belt effectively interrupts the thermal bridge between the two glass shells. A Two-Dimensional Approach to Rubber V-Belt Mechanics

A new two-dimensional approach to the mechanics of rubber V-belt CVT's takes into account the change, along the belt sides, of the sliding velocity on the pulley walls, together with the cross section rotation due to the shear forces. The results show significant differences with the one-dimensional thin belt model and point out the gradual increase or decrease of the belt curvature in the entrance and exit regions of the contact arc, which implies the negligibility of the belt arching in the free spans. Some experimental tests on the global variables of a rubber belt CVT indicate a very fine acceptability of the theoretical model.
New investigations in the North-East quarter of Motya. The archaic cemetery and Building J

In June 2013 the University of Palermo excavations on Motya were resumed. The main goal of the new project is to investigate the north-east quarter of the Phoenician settlement and its urban development since the time of its foundation. Two main areas of excavation were opened. In the early cemetery sixteen cremation burials of the archaic period were uncovered. The most striking discoveries, never attested before, were a tomb containing Hellenistic offerings, and the occurrence of archaic infant cremations. Abstract Structural analysis of a proposed Mesoarchean suture located immediately to the southwest of the Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa – known as the Inyoni Shear Zone (ISZ) – reveals that the main, steeply dipping, NNE-striking fabric is distributed across only 1 km width, is late (D3), and clearly overprints two earlier sets of fabric elements (D1, D2) that were originally oriented at right angles to the direction of proposed collision. Dating of a S2 foliated meta-trondhjemite is interpreted to indicate that D2 deformation was at, or younger than, 3238.2 ± 0.9 Ma. Abstract We use two-dimensional numerical simulations to study the deformation style and the formation of nappes during the shortening of basement–cover systems with half-grabens. We perform simulations with only linear and power-law viscous rheology, and also thermo-mechanical simulations with viscoelastoplastic rheology and temperature-dependent viscosities. The accumulated, area-averaged strain is calculated for the sediments, es, and for the basement, eb, to quantify the deformation style.
