ROLE OF WATER IN SACCHARIDE BASED BIOPRESERVATION
2014
In this thesis a study, both experimental and computational, on saccharide–based biopreservation is presented, with a particular focus on the role of water in the process. Experiments and simulations have been performed on model systems constituted by a protein (myoglobin) embedded in amorphous solid saccharide–water matrices, which may contain also cosolutes to alter their properties. This study has a dual aim: (a) The understanding of the role of the hydrogen–bond (HB) network present in the saccharide matrix, and its modifications induced by solute content and nature, in the process of biopreservation. Many, among the hypotheses currently discussed to explain the effectiveness of sugars …
Caratterizzazione dosimetrica della facility a neutroni termici del reattore TRIGA di Pavia: studio della dose da fotoni mediante rivelatori ESR di a…
2014
The optimization of the procedures of Neutron Capture Therapy (NCT) for cancer treatments involves research for beam characterization. One major issue for this therapy is the reliable dosimetric determination of the various (neutronic and photonic) components of the employed beam. In particular, the precise and accurate measurements of the gamma photon component is fundamental for evaluating the risks to healthy tissues hit by the mixed field. Among solid state dosimeters the alanine detectors read by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) technique present several advantages such as: tissue equivalence for photon and electron beams, linearity of its dose-response over a wide range, high sta…
Electrostatics regulate Epigallocatechin-Gallate effects on Bovine Serum Albumin aggregation
Protein aggregation processes are complex phenomena often involved in the etiology of several pathologies. It is now assessed that all proteins, in suitable conditions, may undergo supramolecular assembly. Aggregation pathways are known to be controlled by solution conditions which regulate protein-protein and protein-solvent interactions affecting binding mechanisms, morphology and inherent toxicity of the aggregate species. In this context, the presence of small molecules was indicated as a promising method to modulate protein-protein interactions reducing pathogenic aggregation. In the light of the idea that common mechanisms regulate anti-aggregogenic properties of small molecules, we h…

Tunable antenna system for plug&play satellite avionics: Prototyping and test
2014
In the framework of an ESA program, a new architecture for plug&play compact antenna systems in the X band has been investigated and experimentally verified by many prototypes. The proposed antenna system takes inspiration from the LEGO building toys: the basic component of the new architecture is a 2.7cm-cube complex module that integrates a three-dimensional local network and a programmable mechanism based on the bonding-wire technology to select one among three polarization options. Elemental blocks can be augmented by accessories to shape the beam and may be used in array configuration over boards provided with cluster-level beamforming networks. Measurements have been performed for bot…
GEOMETRIC AND RADIOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF PAINTINGS
2010
The paper reports an overview of some experiences carried out by some Italian research groups (Politecnico di Milano, University of Palermo, Bruno Kessler Foundation in Trento) aimed to assess the conservation‟s state of some analysed paintings and provide useful information for further diagnostic applications. The activities were accomplished in interdisciplinary teams composed of photogrammetrists, surveyors, restorers and experts of non-destructive diagnostic techniques for Cultural Heritage. Two main aspects are considered: (i) the analysis of the radiometric contents using multispectral images and (ii) the 3D surveying for geometric deformation analysis by means of photogrammetry and l…
Beni Culturali e Innovazione
2015

I Beni Dea in Sicilia. Itinerari di documentazione e fruizione di testimonianze di cultura popolare
2014
Il volume traccia un percorso intorno ai Beni demoetnoantropologici sparsi nell'Isola e per ogni settore di riferimen-to fornisce indicazioni rela-tive fruizioni turistico-culturali. The book is connected to popular culture in Sicily and develops some itineraries of cultural-touristic fruition, over all about material culture, but not only.
