Towards a new conception of metaphysics: Lambert’s criticism on Wolff’s mathematical method

This paper discusses Lambert’s criticism of Wolff’s mathematical method. I take this criticism to consist of two main aspects. Lambert tries on the one hand to revise Wolff’s idea of fundamental concepts by providing what he takes to be a more profound theory of concepts. On the other hand, Lambert introduces postulates that regulate the connection between fundamental concepts and account for their application to experience. Both transformations allow Lambert to put forward a novel approach to metaphysics which is essentially oriented towards experience.

It is well known that, given a generic frame, there exists a unique frame operator which satisfies, together with its adjoint, a double operator inequality. In this paper we start considering the inverse problem, that is how to associate a frame to certain operators satisfying the same kind of inequality. The main motivation of our analysis is the possibility of using frame theory in the discussion of some aspects of the quantum time evolution, both for open and for closed physical systems.

We discuss some mathematical aspects of two particular deformed versions of the Dirac Hamiltonian for graphene close to the Dirac points, one involving \(\mathscr {D}\)-pseudo bosons and the other supersymmetric quantum mechanics. In particular, in connection with \(\mathscr {D}\)-pseudo bosons, we show how biorthogonal sets arise, and we discuss when these sets are bases for the Hilbert space where the model is defined, and when they are not. For the SUSY extension of the model we show how this can be achieved and which results can be obtained.

Abstract Upper-tropospheric Rossby wave packets have received increased attention recently. In most previous studies wave packets have been detected by computing the envelope of the meridional wind field using either complex demodulation or a Hilbert transform. The latter requires fewer choices to be made and appears, therefore, preferable. However, the Hilbert transform is fraught with a significant problem, namely, a tendency that fragments a single wave packet into several parts. The problem arises because Rossby wave packets show substantial deviations from the almost-plane wave paradigm, a feature that is well represented by semigeostrophic dynamics. Phonon-to-spin mapping in a system of a trapped ion via optimal control

We propose a protocol for measurement of the phonon number distribution of a harmonic oscillator based on selective mapping to a discrete spin-1/2 degree of freedom. We consider a system of a harmonically trapped ion, where a transition between two long-lived states can be driven with resolved motional sidebands. The required unitary transforms are generated by amplitude-modulated polychromatic radiation fields, where the time-domain ramps are obtained from numerical optimization by application of the chopped random basis algorithm (CRAB).
