Serum interleukin 15 in anorexia nervosa: Comparison to normal weight and obese girls

Background: Interleukin 15 (IL-15) plays a key role in the muscle-fat interaction, reducing adipose tissue mass without changes in the lean body mass and reduction of food intake. Here we assess serum IL-15 levels in girls with anorexia nervosa (AN) relative to obese and normal weight female adolescents.Methods: Serum IL-15 concentrations were evaluated using a commercially available ELISA kit in 32 Polish girls with restrictive AN, 29 girls with obesity (O), and 21 healthy controls (C). The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is common, and its associated risk burdens of diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are a major public health problem. The hypothesis that main constituent parameters of the MetS share common pathophysiologic mechanisms provides a conceptual framework for the future research. Role of the gastroenterologist in the management of the obese patient.

Obesity is a highly prevalent disease worldwide, and one in which gastroenterologists can play an important role. Some digestive diseases are more common in obese patients, and preoperative evaluation may be required in some cases. Additionally, bariatric surgery can lead to digestive complications in the short and long term that require intervention, and endoscopic treatment can be an important factor in weight loss. The aim of this review is to highlight the role of the gastroenterologist in the management of obese patients who are either scheduled for or have undergone surgical or endoscopic treatment for obesity.

Ocular counterrolling. Some practical considerations of a new evaluation method for diagnostic purposes.

Ocular counterrolling (OCR) data taken from the literature (12 publications) were used to test the best fit (least-square fit) of these measurements with respect to three mathematical models: a sine relation between OCR and the lateral tilt stimulus, a complex cosine-square relation, and a logarithmic relation between OCR gain and tilt. The latter proved to be the best fitting function. The Feldenkrais Method (FM) has broad application in populations interested in improving awareness, health, and ease of function.This review aimed to update the evidence for the benefits of FM, and for which populations. A best practice systematic review protocol was devised. Included studies were appraised using the Cochrane risk of bias approach and trial findings analysed individually and collectively where possible.
