A funerary perspective on the Bell Beaker period in the Wester Mediterranean Reading the social context of individual burials at La Vital (Gandia, Va…
2013
[EN] The discussion about social dynamics in recent Pre- history is supported by the study of funerary practices. The presence and significance of individual and collec- tive burials in Final Neolithic/Chalcolithic societies in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula provides new evi- dence for the debate concerning the emergence of social inequalities in this region. Our contribution is based on the recent discovery and excavation of several individual pit burials in domestic contexts at the site of La Vital (Gandía, Valencia). The particularities of the identified burials (different ritual episodes) and their content (Bell Beaker pottery, metal objects, animal offerings) together with an …
1200 years of decadal-scale variability of Mediterranean vegetation and climate at Pantelleria Island, Italy.
2013
A new sedimentary sequence from Lago di Venere on Pantelleria Island, located in the Strait of Sicily between Tunisia and Sicily was recovered. The lake is located in the coastal infra-Mediterranean vegetation belt at 2 m a.s.l. Pollen, charcoal and sedimentological analyses are used to explore linkages among vegetation, fire and climate at a decadal scale over the past 1200 years. A dry period from ad 800 to 1000 that corresponds to the 'Medieval Warm Period' (WMP) is inferred from sedimentological analysis. The high content of carbonate recorded in this period suggests a dry phase, when the ratio of evaporation/precipitation was high. During this period the island was dominated by thermop…
La serie monetal ‘Bes/palmera’. Una pseudo-ceca en la Hispania Ulterior
2018
This paper aims at studying an unknown coinage from the Iberian Peninsula depicting the Phoenician god Bes on the obverse and a palm tree on the reverse. Due to their imitative characteristics, these coins are attributed to a pseudo-mint located in Hispania Ulterior in the 1st century BC in relation with a dearth of cash in some areas of actual Andalusia. With parallels to the phenomenon of the pseudo-mint of Ebusus, settled in Pompeii, new hypotheses are suggested as regards the situation in Hispania Ulterior, where all the finds originate. The circulation of Ebusian coinage in Campania led to its imitation in Pompeii. We conclude that a similar phenomenon occurred here, although such an a…
Architettura emergenziale: buone pratiche esecutive
2022
This paper provides a comparative overview of different types of (temporary) shelters that have recently been used in various field locations in response to a forced displacement due to disastrous events. In particular, possible strategies useful to increase the sustainability of the humanitarian response and reduce the carbon footprint, while ensuring the adequacy and suitability of the shelters themselves, are here explored. This study investigates a systematic design framework that is often constrained by many obstacles such as the limited availability of low-cost materials, and a lack of local labour experience. To reduce the negative impact of a disaster, especially in the developing c…
Influence of annealing atmosphere on photoelectrochemical response of TiO2 nanotubes anodized under controlled hydrodynamic conditions
2021
[EN] The influence of three annealing atmospheres (air, nitrogen and argon) and the use of controlled hydrodynamic conditions (from 0 to 5000 rpm) on morphological, structural, chemical and photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2 nanotubes have been evaluated. For this purpose, different characterization techniques have been used: Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman Confocal Laser Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Incident Photon-to-electron Conversion Efficiency measurements, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, Mott-Schottky analysis and photoelectrochemical water splitting tests. According to the results, it can be concluded that both hy…
Né uomo né bestia. Riflessioni sulla Theriotes a partire dal VII libro dell’Etica Nicomachea
2010
In the Book VII of the Nichomachean Ethics Aristotle briefly analyzes the concept of theriotes. According to the Stagyrite, as it is well known, someone who does not feel the need to live in a community is either a beast or a god. Only a few human beings abandon their natural position between the two to move, either through exceptional virtue towards the gods, or, because of theriotes. In this sense, theriotes is once again an anthropopoietic quality that defines the Other. Despite the name, it is an entirely human deviation, characterised by an unusually cruel and monstruos behaviour, over the borderline of the moral evaluation. By this might be meant either the barbarian (among barbarians…
Metabolic syndrome in hypertensive patients: An unholy alliance
2014
For many years, it has been recognized that hypertension tends to cluster with various anthropometric and metabolic abnormalities including abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glucose intolerance, insulin resistance and hyperuricemia. This constellation of various conditions has been transformed from a pathophysiological concept to a clinical entity, which has been defined metabolic syndrome (MetS). The consequences of the MetS have been difficult to assess without commonly accepted criteria to diagnose it. For this reason, on 2009 the International Diabetes Federation, the American Heart Association and other scientific organizations pro…
