The Evolving Role of Fetuin-A in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: An Overview from Liver to the Heart

2021

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is strongly associated to the features of metabolic syndrome which can progress to cirrhosis, liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the most common cause of mortality in people with NAFLD is not liver-related but stems from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). The prevalence of NAFLD is on the rise, mainly as a consequence of its close association with two major worldwide epidemics, obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The exact pathogenesis of NAFLD and especially the mechanisms leading to disease progression and CVD have not been completely elucidated. Human fetuin-A (alpha-2-Heremans Schmid glycoprotein), a glycoprotein produ…

Beyond BMI : waist circumference and social environment is associated with motor performance ability in kindergartners

2020

Abstract Background The aim of the current study was to examine the relationship between anthropometric characteristics (i.e. body height, body weight, body mass index [BMI] and waist circumference [WC]) with motor performance ability [MPA], social environmental factors of the district (i.e. employment status/working life, education, social situation/heterogeneity and home environment), where the respective kindergarten was located, as well as other potential health determinants in a representative sample of kindergartners. Methods We analyzed data of 434 children aged 3 to 6 years which were obtained from a community-based cross-sectional health study conducted in the city of Mainz, German…

The arithmetic decomposition of central Cantor sets

2018

Abstract Every central Cantor set of positive Lebesgue measure is the arithmetic sum of two central Cantor sets of Lebesgue measure zero. Under some mild condition this result can be strengthened by stating that the summands can be chosen to be C s regular if the initial set is of this class.

Combining Atomic Force Microscopy and Depth-Sensing Instruments for the Nanometer-Scale Mechanical Characterization of Soft Matter

2009

Complex materials exhibit a hierarchical structure where a gradient of features on nanometer scale is induced by the synthetic route eventually enhanced by the loading condition. The nanometer scale at which individual components arrange, determining their properties, is a current challenge of mechanical testing. In this work, a survey on nanoindentation is outlined based on the comparison of results obtained by Atomic Force Microscopy and Depth-Sensing Instruments and their combination. An Atomic Force Microscope equipped with a Force Transducer gives indeed the possibility to scan the sample surface in contact mode, thereby allowing one to choose a suitable position for the nanoindentatio…

A computational and experimental investigation of halloysite silicic surface modifications after alkaline treatment

2023

Density functional theory calculations were performed in order to investigate the formation of silanol groups on the outer surface of halloysite nanotubes, as possible products of the reactions with water in alkaline environments. The results, discussed in terms of energy release and structural properties of the modified surface, suggest that the formation of various kinds of silanol group constellations, and even the extraction of orthosilicic acid, are highly exothermic reaction in the presence of hydroxide ions. Thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR, XRD and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry performed on halloysite treated at high pH conditions indicate that the adsorption of water on the oute…

Microemulsion encapsulated into halloysite nanotubes and their applications for cleaning of a marble surface

2018

Halloysite nanotubes were used to incorporate anionic surfactant micelles and an organic solvent to generate a cleaning system to be applied in Cultural Heritage restoration. The targeted adsorption is driven by electrostatic interactions based on the nanotubes peculiar charge separation. Namely anionic species are driven to the positively charged inner surface while being prevented from interacting with the halloysite outer surface that possesses a positive charge density. The hybrid organic/inorganic emulsion was characterized by dynamic light scattering. Analysis of the autocorrelation function allowed us to define the presence of surfactant aggregates inside/outside the nanotube lumen a…

Resistin: Insulin resistance to malignancy

2014

Adipose tissue is recognized as an endocrine organ that secretes bioactive substances known as adipokines. Excess adipose tissue and adipose tissue dysfunction lead to dysregulated adipokine production that can contribute to the development of obesity-related co-morbidities. Among the various adipokines, resistin, which was initially considered as a determinant of the emergence of insulin resistance in obesity, has appeared as an important link between obesity and inflammatory processes. Several experimental and clinical studies have suggested an association between increased resistin levels and severe conditions associated with obesity such as cardiovascular disease and malignancies. In th…
