Generalization of the Lorenz-Haken model to atomic systems with different relaxation rates for the two laser levels

1995

Abstract The fundamental Lorenz-Haken laser model is generalized to the case of a two-level amplifying medium with different external relaxation rates for the two levels and with internal relaxation. This represents one further degree of freedom, and important quantitative differences in the laser dynamics. i.e., in the stationary solutions, linear stability analysis, and timedependent solutions, are found. No significant qualitative differences, however, are observed.

Relaxation, postponement, and features of the attractor in a driven varactor oscillator

1990

The driven varactor oscillator is investigated by numerical integration of its ODEs using the standard model of circuit theory. Attention is given to some properties of the basic relaxation mechanism. For time dependent amplitudes of the sinusoidal driving voltage the post-ponement of the bifurcations is characterized by transient Lyapunov numbers. The postponement of the first bifurcation shows the same dependence on the sweep velocity as in the case of the nonautonomous quadratic map. The shapes of the attractors are displayed in extended phase space. Generalized Renyi-dimensionsD 0 andD 1 have been determined in the chaotic region. A corresponding twodimensional Pioncare map indicates se…

Chiral fermions and gauge fixing in five-dimensional theories

2001

We study in detail the issue of gauge-fixing in theories with one universal extra dimension, i.e. theories where both bosons and fermions display Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations. The extra dimension is compactified using the standard orbifold construction for a massless chiral fermion. We carry out the gauge-fixing procedure at the level of the five-dimensional theory and determine the tree-level propagators and interaction vertices needed for performing perturbative calculations with the effective four-dimensional theory resulting after the compactification. The gauge-independence of the tree-level S-matrix involving massive KK modes is verified using specific examples. In order to obtain ma…

Dissipative Polarization Domain Walls in a Passive Coherently Driven Kerr Resonator.

2021

Using a passive, coherently driven nonlinear optical fiber ring resonator, we report the experimental realization of dissipative polarization domain walls. The domain walls arise through a symmetry breaking bifurcation and consist of temporally localized structures where the amplitudes of the two polarization modes of the resonator interchange, segregating domains of orthogonal polarization states. We show that dissipative polarization domain walls can persist in the resonator without changing shape. We also demonstrate on-demand excitation, as well as pinning of domain walls at specific positions for arbitrary long times. Our results could prove useful for the analog simulation of ubiquito…

Nonlinear dynamics of a semilinear photorefractive oscillator

2001

The experimental study of the dynamics of an empty coherent semilinear photorefractive oscillator is reported. It is shown that starting from a certain coupling strength the oscillation occurs with two frequencies shifted symmetrically with respect to the frequency of the pump wave. The threshold of bifurcation in oscillation spectrum depends on pump intensity ratio.

On the dynamics of dislocation patterning

1997

Recent computer simulations on dislocation patterning have provided remarkable results in accordance with empirical laws. Moreover, several analytical models on dislocation dynamics have provided qualitative insight on dislocation patterning. However, a model, based on partial differential equations, which gives a dynamical evolution of dislocation patterns in function of measurable variables still missing. Here, we give a re-formulation of a model proposed some years ago. From this formulation, we obtained that the onset of a dislocation instability is related to the applied stress. The analytical and numerical results reported are partial and studies on this direction are under developmen…

Deforming D-brane models on T6/(Z2×Z2M) orbifolds

2016

We review the stabilisation of complex structure moduli in Type IIA orientifolds, especially on with discrete torsion, via deformations of orbifold singularities. While D6-branes in SO(2N) and USp(2N) models always preserve supersymmetry and thus give rise to flat directions, in an exemplary Pati-Salam model with only U(N) gauge groups ten out of the 15 deformation moduli can be stabilised at the orbifold point.

Structural similarities and differences among attractors and their intensity maps in the laser-Lorenz model

1995

Abstract Numerical studies of the laser-Lorenz model using parameters reasonably accessible for recent experiments with a single mode homogeneously broadened laser demonstrate that the form of the return map of successive peak values of the intensity changes from a sharply cusped map in resonance to a map with a smoothly rounded maximum as the laser is detuned into the period doubling regime. This transformation appears to be related to the disappearance (with detuning) of the heteroclinic structural basis for the stable manifold which exists in resonance. This is in contrast to the evidence reported by Tang and Weiss (Phys. Rev. A 49 (1994) 1296) of a cusped map for both the period doublin…

Oscillation spectra of semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator with two pump waves

2002

The transition of the single-frequency oscillation of a semilinear photorefractive coherent oscillator for sufficiently large coupling strengths into two-frequency oscillation is predicted and is observed experimentally. The critical value of coupling strength at which the bifurcation occurs is a function of pump-intensity ratio and cavity losses. For certain combinations of these parameters, the critical coupling strength for spectrum bifurcation becomes smaller than the threshold coupling strength: in these cases double-frequency oscillation appears at the threshold. The supercritical bifurcation in the oscillation spectrum is analogous to the second-order phase transition.
