A number of acryl and methacryl derivatives of different sulfanilamides (1a—I) were prepared and polymerized. The fixation of the sulfonamide to the polymerizable group was carried out directly, using the acryl- and methacrylamides, and by means of spacer groups, to favour the enzymatic or hydrolytic release of the drug moiety. Selected sulfonamide types of different pKA values were used, and the pH-dependant solubility of the corresponding polymers was studied. The monomeric acryloyl and methacryloyl sulfonamides were homopolymerized radically by AIBN. For distribution studies polysulfadiazineacrylamide, 14C-labelled in the main chain (2e'), was synthesized. Copolymerization with 2-methyls…
Effect of small amounts of poly(lactic acid) on the recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottles
2011
Abstract Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is one of the most used commodity polymers, especially for food and beverage applications, and its recycling is of great importance because of the possible use in the textile and construction industries. On the other hand, the interest in biodegradable polymers has led, in recent years, to the use of materials such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) also in the food and beverage industry. The presence of small amounts of PLA in the PET waste can significantly affect the post-consumer recycling process. In this work, the effect of the presence of small amounts of PLA on the recycling of PET bottles is investigated by rheological, mechanical, morphological …
Natural compounds as light stabilizer for a starch-based biodegradable polymer
2014
Abstract The photooxidation behavior of a commercial starch-based biodegradable polymer, i.e., new generation Mater-Bi, loaded with natural stabilizers was investigated in consideration for outdoor agricultural applications. The photooxidation behavior of the biodegradable films was monitored mainly by mechanical tests and spectroscopic analysis. In order to formulate biodegradable films without any synthetic compounds, suitable for outdoor applications and with good photooxidation stability, antioxidants such as α-tocopherol and quercetin (Q) were considered. The results obtained using natural compounds were compared with those obtained by using a synthetic antioxidant and a light stabiliz…
Biodegradable plastics for hygienic disposable products
2003
Disposable products satisfy many requirements that are difficult to achieve with long-life products, so we are obliged to use them even if they have a strong environmental impact. Furthermore it is interesting to note that large part of these products are made of plastic materials. This class of products can be redesigned with a smaller environmental impact using biodegradable polymer. The case study of a disposable product (a toothbrush for restaurants made of a starch based plastic) will be discussed as an application example

Effect of polarity and elongational flow on the morphology and properties of a new nanobiocomposite
2015
Nanocomposites are a new class of biodegradable polymer materials with an ultrafine phase dispersion of the order of a few nanometers in a biodegradable polymer matrix that shows very interesting properties often very different from those of conventional filled polymers. In this work the effect of the polarity of the organomodified montmorillonite and of the elongational flow on the morphology and the rheological and mechanical properties of a new nanobiocomposite having as a matrix a biodegradable copolyester based bland has been investigated. The morphology of the nanocomposite with the more polar organomodified clay shows a more exfoliated morphology due to the major compatibility with t…
Valorization of kiwi agricultural waste and industry by-products by recovering bioactive compounds and applications as food additives : a circular ec…
2021
Currently, agricultural production generates large amounts of organic waste, both from the maintenance of farms and crops (agricultural wastes) and from the industrialization of the product (food industry waste). In the case of Actinidia cultivation, agricultural waste groups together leaves, flowers, stems and roots while food industry by-products are represented by discarded fruits, skin and seeds. All these matrices are now underexploited and so, they can be revalued as a natural source of ingredients to be applied in food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical industries. Kiwifruit composition (phenolic compounds, volatile compounds, vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, etc.) is an outstanding basis…

Preliminary assessment of the possibility of supporting the decomposition of biodegradable packaging
2017
This article presents a preliminary evaluation of the possibility of using grass biomass from a sports field as a compost ingredient which positively affects the degree of decomposition of the biodegradable wrappings. For 5 months the biodegradable bags were stored, both empty and filled with organic waste in the heap of grass clippings. After that period, fragments of the bags were observed under the microscope and then assessed the state of their decomposition. The results indicate that the biomass used favourably affected the process of bag degradation, however the speed of decomposition of the empty bags was quicker than the bags filled with the organic waste.
A Biodegradable, Bio-Based Polymer for the Production of Tools for Aquaculture: Processing, Properties and Biodegradation in Sea Water
2023
Bio-based, biodegradable polymers can dramatically reduce the carbon dioxide released into the environment by substituting fossil-derived polymers in some applications. In this work, prototypes of trays for aquaculture applications were produced via injection molding by using a biodegradable polymer, Mater-Bi®. A characterization carried out via calorimetric, rheological and mechanical tests revealed that the polymer employed shows properties suitable for the production of tools to be used in aquaculture applications. Moreover, the samples were subjected to a biodegradation test in conditions that simulate the marine environment. The as-treated samples were characterized from gravimetrical,…
