Orientation and exfoliation of clay nanoparticles in the spinning of a nanobiocomposite sample

2016

Polymer nanobiocomposites represent a new group of materials filled with inert nanosized particles that show very interesting properties with respect to the matrix and the same biodegradability of the matrix. In this work we have studied the effect of the elongational flow on the morphology and dynamic-mechanical properties of a new nanobiocomposite made by a matrix of biodegradable PLA and a filler of organomodified montmorillonite.

Bio-polymeric based sponges for oily waste recovery

2015

Over the last years, many efforts were dedicated to the development of sustainable sorbent materials. The interest concerns a wide range of applications. Oily products and utilization are increasing all over the world as far as the possibility of spill oily accidents. In this direction, production of sponges showing lipophilic properties allows for the proper disposal of oily waste and does not cause secondary pollution. In this work, it is proposed an eco-friendly technology to prepare a polycaprolactone (PCL) biodegradable sponge for the selective absorption of oil from water. PCL biopolymer matrix was melt mixed with water-soluble porogen agents and then leached in water to obtain a poro…

Proteins in Ionic Liquids: Reactions, Applications, and Futures

2019

Biopolymer processing and handling is greatly facilitated by the use of ionic liquids, given the increased solubility, and in some cases, structural stability imparted to these molecules. Focussing on proteins, we highlight here not just the key drivers behind protein-ionic liquid interactions that facilitate these functionalities, but address relevant current and potential applications of protein-ionic liquid interactions, including areas of future interest.

Tissue Engineering Biopolymers

2011

Tissue engineering has always been a multidisciplinary research area focused on tissue regeneration and restoration of organs function, through implantation of cells or tissues growing outside the body. According to increase in knowledge of the interactions between living organisms and biomaterials, development and diversification of biocompatible devices has brought the world of medicine to what has been the greatest therapeutic revolution of our times. The main challenge of biomaterials is not only related to "tolerance-biocompatibility" by the body but also in its functionality. A biomaterial must be able to positively interact with tissues and exercise those functions for which it was d…

Biopolymer Recovery from Aerobic Granular Sludge and Conventional Flocculent Sludge in Treating Industrial Wastewater: Preliminary Analysis of Differ…

2022

The recovery of biopolymers from sewage sludge could be a crucial step in implementing circular economy principles in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). In this frame, the present study was aimed at evaluating the simultaneous production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) obtainable from the treatment of agro-industrial wastewater. Two biological enrichment systems, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and a conventional activated sludge operating as a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), were monitored for 204 and 186 days, respectively. The maximum biopolymers accumulation capacity was close to 0.60 mgPHA-EPS gVSS−1 in the AGS when operating at 3 kgCODm…
