Polychlorinated biphenyls, classified as either phenobarbital- or 3-methylcholanthrene-type inducers of cytochrome P-450, are both hepatic tumor prom…

1986

Abstract The cytochrome P -450 isozymes, cytochrome P -450 MC 1 and MC 2 , purified from rats treated with 3-methylcholanthrene (MC), were found by immunohistochemical staining to be strongly induced in the livers of rats treated with 3,3′, 4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCBP), while the cytochrome P -450 isozymes, PB 1 and PB 2 , purified from the livers of rats treated with phenobarbital (PB), were shown to be induced in the livers of rats treated with 2,2′, 4,4′, 5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP). The latter compound also strongly induced NADPH-cytochrome P -450-reductase. Following induction, all 5 enzymes were located preferentially in the centrilobular and midzonal region of the liver acinus.…

The combined use of chemical and biochemical markers to assess water quality along the Ebro River

2004

Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and barbel (Barbus graellsii) were collected from five sites along the Ebro River. The study was designed to assess levels of persistent organic pollutants and metals bioaccumulated by fish, and some biochemical responses (cytochrome P450 system, phase II activities, and metallothioneins) against those pollutants. The highest levels of PCBs and DDTs were detected in carp from industrialised areas, which also showed high levels of mercury and cadmium in the liver, and high levels of nonylphenol in bile. Significant alterations in some biochemical markers were observed and associated to combined exposure to pollutants. The activity 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase ranged …

Inhibition of stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 expression induces CHOP-dependent cell death in human cancer cells.

2010

Background Cancer cells present a sustained de novo fatty acid synthesis with an increase of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) production. This change in fatty acid metabolism is associated with overexpression of stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (Scd1), which catalyses the transformation of saturated fatty acids into monounsaturated fatty acids (e.g., oleic acid). Several reports demonstrated that inhibition of Scd1 led to the blocking of proliferation and induction of apoptosis in cancer cells. Nevertheless, mechanisms of cell death activation remain to be better understood. Principal Findings In this study, we demonstrated that Scd1 extinction by siRNA triggered abolition of de nov…

Neurons of the medial cortex outer plexiform layer of the lizard Podarcis hispanica: Golgi and immunocytochemical studies.

1994

The study of Golgi-impregnated lizard brains has revealed a scarce but heterogeneous neuronal population in the outer plexiform layer of the medial cortex. Some of the neuronal types detected here resemble the neurons of the dentate molecular layer of the mammalian hippocampus. According to their morphology, five intrinsic neuronal types have been clearly identified: short axon aspinous bipolar neuron (type 1, or sarmentous neuron), short axon aspinous juxtasomatic neuron (type 2, or coral neuron), short axon sparsely spinous multipolar neuron (type 3, or stellate neuron), short axon sparsely spinous juxtasomatic multipolar neuron (type 4, or deep stellate neuron, and sparsely spinous juxta…

Nanocarriers for antioxidant resveratrol: formulation approach, vesicle self-assembly and stability evaluation.

2013

In this work we studied various nanoformulations of resveratrol in phospholipid vesicles. Conventional phophatidylcholine liposomes were prepared and characterized in parallel with PEVs (Penetration Enhancer-containing Vesicles) obtained by adding one of eight selected amphiphilic penetration enhancers (PEs; 0.2% w/v; HLB range 1-16) to the composition. All vesicles were around 100 nm, negatively charged (∼-30 mV) and able to incorporate resveratrol in good yields (>74%). The structure and the lamellar self-organization of the vesicles were investigated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Small and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (SWAXS). These analyses showed that the lamellarity of …

Theoretical study of the derivative hydrocarbons of biphenylene. I. Electronic spectrum of the biphenylene

1969

The electronic spectrum of biphenylene has been studied theoretically. The investigation is based on the semi-empirical LCAO SCF MO method with various degrees of approximations. The results have been analysed with regard to the following two factors: (a) The difference in effective electronegativity between the carbon atoms in the four-membered ring and the other carbon atoms in the molecule. (b) The inclusion of doubly excited configurations in the description of the π-electronic molecular states. The theory satisfactorily interprets the excitation energies and the nature of the electronic transitions. The predictions are particularly affected by the inclusion of the doubly excited config…
