X-ray and DFT-calculated structures of a vanadyl Schiff base complex: (methanol-κO)[2-methoxy-6-({2-[(2-oxido-3-methoxybenzylidene)amino]benzyl}imino…

2012

The central VVatom in the title mononuclear oxovanadium complex, [VO(C23H20N2O4)(CH3OH)]·H2O, has a distorted octahedral coordination. Two N atoms and two O atoms of the Schiff base define the base of the bipyramid and two O atoms are in the apical positions, one from vanadyl and the second from methanol. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for the title complex and its ligand to compare their geometry in the solid and gas phases. Additional analyses were made of the changes in the geometry of the ligand during complex formation. The HOMA (harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity) descriptor of π-electron delocalization was calculated to estimate the aromaticity of t…

Synthesis and characterization of some diorganotin(IV) complexes of Schiff bases derived from a non-protein amino acid. Crystal structures of {HO2CC6…

2008

Diorganotin(IV) complexes R2Sn(LH)2 (R = Me, nBu) and {[nBu2Sn(LH)]2O}2 (LH = 4-[(2Z)-(3-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-butenylidene)amino]benzoate and 4-[{(E)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methylidene}mino]benzoate) have been reported. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR (1H, 13C, 119Sn) and 119mSn Mossbauer spectroscopy. Crystal structures of a ligand {HO2CC6H4[NC(H)}{C(CH3)CH(CH3)-3-OH]-p} and one of its di-n-butyltin(IV) complexes (nBu2Sn{O2CC6H4[NC(H)}{C(CH3)CH(CH3)-3-OH]-p}2) were determined. The spectroscopic data suggest that R2Sn(LH)2 complexes have skew-trapezoidal bipyramidal structure while {[nBu2Sn(LH)]2O}2 complexes adopt a dimeric tetraorganodistannoxane structure in the…

Development of the insight scale for affective disorders (ISAD): modification from the scale to assess unawareness of mental disorder.

2011

Abstract Background Research on insight in patients with mood disorders has grown in recent years. Several instruments to assess insight have been used, but most of them have been specifically designed for psychosis and may not appear relevant to mood disorders. The aim of the present study is to develop a short, multidimensional, reliable and valid scale to measure insight in patients with mood disorders, based on the Amador's Scale to Assess Unawareness of Mental Disorders (SUMD). Method A Delphi method was used to facilitate expert participation and ensure face and content validity. The SUMD structure and items were used as a reference in the scale development. A new scale with 17 items …

Alteration of serotonin system by polychlorinated biphenyls exposure.

2011

Although commercial production of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was banned in 1979, PCBs continue to be an environmental and health concern due to their high bioaccumulation and slow degradation rates. In fact, PCBs are still present in our food supply (fish, meat, and dairy products). In laboratory animals, exposure to single PCB congener or to mixtures of different congeners induces a variety of physiological alterations. PCBs cross the placenta and even exposure at low level is harmful for the foetus by leading to neurodevelopment alterations. Serotonin system which regulates many physiological functions from platelet activation to high cerebral processes and neurodevelopment is one o…

Persistent Organic Pollutants and Fatty Acid Profile in a Typical Cheese from Extensive Farms: First Assessment of Human Exposure by Dietary Intake

2022

Dairy products represent an important source of beneficial substances for humans. At the same time, they can expose the consumers to environmental contaminants ingested by animals through their diet, influencing their health negatively. This experiment aims to evaluate the risk and benefits related to the consumption of typical stretched cheeses, considering their fatty acid (FA) profile and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) content. Six representative farms, two of them organic, raising Cinisara cattle were selected, considering the typical extensive management systems, based on feeding of natural pasture integrated with concentrate and hay depending on the availability of forage on pas…

Comparison of stable isotope composition and inorganic and organic contaminant levels in wild and farmed bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, in the Medite…

2009

Abstract Stable isotope composition (δ13C and δ15N) and persistent pollutants, including heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb, As, Cu, Zn) and organochlorine compounds (PCBs, HCB and p,p′-DDE), were measured in muscle and liver tissues of wild and farmed bluefin tunas to investigate the changes occurring during the farming period and to assess the quality, in terms of contaminants, of the final product. At the end of farming, the food supplied was clearly integrated into the tuna tissues as derived from stable isotope signatures, and, contrarily to the literature findings obtained for other species, farmed tunas showed slight variations in persistent elements and chemical compounds in comparison with w…

The trophic transfer of persistent pollutants (HCB, DDTs, PCBs) within polar marine food webs.

2017

Biomagnification (increase in contaminant concentrations at successively higher levels of trophic web), is a process that can transversally impair biodiversity and human health. Most research shows that biomagnification should be higher at poles with northern sites having a major tendency to biomagnify Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) through their marine food webs. We investigated the biomagnification degree into two marine trophic webs combining carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes and POP analyses. We showed that the Antarctic trophic web was more depleted than the sub-Arctic one and the differences highlighted for the basal part could explain the difference in length between them. Co…

HCB, p,p'-DDE and PCB ontogenetic transfer and magnification in bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) from the Mediterranean Sea.

2007

The bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus (Linnaeus 1758), is biologically and economically important in the Atlantic--Mediterranean ecosystems. Bluefin tuna feed on diverse food items depending on their age, thus they occupy different trophic levels during their lifespan. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), p,p'-DDE and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are well-known persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the Mediterranean basin. The relationship between stable isotopes of nitrogen (N) and the POP residue levels in tissues has recently increased knowledge on the link between the trophic levels and the contaminant accumulation. Trophic levels were estimated by using 15N/14N ratio (delta15N) and HCB, p,p'-DDE…

Levels of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and metals in European sea bass from fish farms in Italy

2012

The study evaluated the levels of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) and metals in the fillet of medium (468 ± 92 g) and large (708 ± 135 g) European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) from 11 Italian fish farms using different rearing systems. DL-PCB contamination was higher in fish grown in extensive coastal lagoons compared with intensive inland basins and intensive sea cages (28.5 vs. 9.13 and 13.1 pg Toxic Equivalents (TEQ)/g fat; P < 0.001). Copper concentrations were lower (0.810 vs. 0.993 and 1.071 mg/kg fw) and mercury was higher (0.025 vs. 0.006 and 0.003 mg/kg fw) (P < 0.001) in sea bass from extensive farms than from intensively farmed fish in inland or sea cage system…
