Wastewater constituents impact biofilm microbial community in receiving streams

Microbial life in natural biofilms is dominated by prokaryotes and microscopic eukaryotes living in dense association. In stream ecosystems, microbial biofilms influence primary production, elemental cycles, food web interactions as well as water quality. Understanding how biofilm communities respond to anthropogenic impacts, such as wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent, is important given the key role of biofilms in stream ecosystem function. Bifurcation analysis of a TaO memristor model

This paper presents a study of bifurcation in the time-averaged dynamics of TaO memristors driven by narrow pulses of alternating polarities. The analysis, based on a physics-inspired model, focuses on the stable fixed points and on how these are affected by the pulse parameters. Our main finding is the identification of a driving regime when two stable fixed points exist simultaneously. To the best of our knowledge, such bistability is identified in a single memristor for the first time. This result can be readily tested experimentally, and is expected to be useful in future memristor circuit designs.

The dynamics of two competing species within the framework of the generalized Lotka-Volterra equations, in the presence of multiplicative alpha-stable Lévy noise sources and a random time dependent interaction parameter, is studied. The species dynamics is characterized by two different dynamical regimes, exclusion of one species and coexistence of both, depending on the values of the interaction parameter, which obeys a Langevin equation with a periodically fluctuating bistable potential and an additive alpha-stable Lévy noise. Phase-bistable pattern formation in oscillatory systems via rocking: application to nonlinear optical systems

We present a review, together with new results, of a universal forcing of oscillatory systems, termed ‘rocking’, which leads to the emergence of a phase bistability and to the kind of pattern formation associated with it, characterized by the presence of phase domains, phase spatial solitons and phase-bistable extended patterns. The effects of rocking are thus similar to those observed in the classic 2 : 1 resonance (the parametric resonance) of spatially extended systems of oscillators, which occurs under a spatially uniform, time-periodic forcing at twice the oscillations' frequency. Colorectal cancer (CRC) and cachexia are associated with the gut microbiota and microbial surface molecules. We characterized the CRC-associated microbiota and investigated whether cachexia affects the microbiota composition. Further, we examined the possible relationship between the microbial surface molecule flagellin and CRC. CRC cells (C26) were inoculated into mice. Activin receptor (ACVR) ligands were blocked, either before tumor formation or before and after, to increase muscle mass and prevent muscle loss. Abstract The title compound, tetrabutylammonium bis(1,2-dimercaptoethene-1,2-dicarbonirtilato-S,S′)-nickel (III) [henceforth (NBu4)Ni(mnt)2] undergoes a hysteretic phase transition that occurs at 172 K upon cooling. Crystallographic studies show that the phase transition is an order–disorder type involving one arm of the NBu 4 + cation. Both phases are monoclinic, space group C2/c with a = 30.860(3), b = 13.804(2), c = 15.678(2) A and β = 115.642(3)° with V = 6020.8(11) A3 at room temperature and with a = 31.073(3), b = 13.928(1), c = 14.414(1) A and β = 115.073(2)° and V = 5652.1(9) A3 at 84 K. Intersystem Crossing and Light-Induced Bistability in Iron(?) Spin-Crossover Compounds

Abstract The dynamics of the high-spin→low-spin intersystem crossing process in iron(?) spin-crossover compounds are strongly influenced by cooperative effects of elastic origin which are due to the large difference in volume between high-spin and low-spin complexes. The deviation from first order kinetics is attributed to a build-up of an internal pressure as the relaxation proceeds, leading to a characteristic self-acceleration. The elastic interactions may lead to a light-induced bistability for systems which otherwise remain in the high-spin state down to cryogenic temperatures.
Phase dynamics in graphene-based Josephson junctions in the presence of thermal and correlated fluctuations

In this work we study by numerical methods the phase dynamics in ballistic graphene-based short Josephson junctions. The supercurrent through a graphene junction shows a non-sinusoidal phase-dependence, unlike a conventional junction ruled by the well-known d.c. Josephson relation. A superconductor-graphene-superconductor system exhibits superconductive quantum metastable states similar to those present in normal current-biased JJs. We explore the effects of thermal and correlated fluctuations on the escape time from these metastable states, when the system is stimulated by an oscillating bias current.
