Cytoprotective effect of NMDA receptor antagonists on prion protein (PrionSc)-induced toxicity in rat cortical cell cultures

Rat cortical cells were incubated with the Scrapie prion protein, PrionSc. At concentrations of 3 ng/ml of PrionSc and higher, the viability of the cells decreased significantly after a 12-h incubation period. Simultaneously, the degree of DNA fragmentation increased. In control experiments with antibodies against PrionSc, PrionSc lost its deleterious effect on neurons. PrionSc did not affect the viability of astrocytes. Gene polymorphisms and HLA-G expression in spontaneous abortions

Abstract Introduction HLA-G and HLA-E are claimed to play a role in establishing maternal–fetal immune tolerance and in maintaining pregnancy. The presence of polymorphism in the HLA-G gene could cause a deficient or excessive expression of the HLA-G and HLA-E molecules. These anomalies could eventually cause pregnancy losses. Embryo classification method based in time-lapse analysis is associated with blastocyst quality

groups: 87.7%(10434/11893), 87.4%(2674/3060), 80.2%(1350/1683) and 81.0%(634/783). Abnormal fertilization rate was significantly lower in 9598% group(6.9%,54/783) than other groups(16.1%,1918/11893; 13.8%,421/ 3060; 11.4%,192/1683). Good embryo, pregnancy and implantation rates were no significant differences among four groups(48.9%,61.6%,43.5%; 48.9%,62.1%,43.5%; 50.0%,57.6%,42.3%; 53.1%,62.5%,45.7%). CONCLUSION: Sperm morphology does not affect normal fertilization, embryonic development and clinical outcome.

“Ice” juice from apples obtained by pressing at subzero temperatures of apples pretreated by pulsed electric fields

Abstract The impact of apple pretreatment by pulsed electric field (PEF) on juice extraction using the freezing-assisted pressing was studied. Apple discs were PEF pretreated at electric field strength of E  = 800 V/cm and then air blast frozen inside the freezer (− 40 °C). Then, pressing experiments in a laboratory-pressing chamber (2–5 bars) were started at sub-zero temperature (− 5 °C). Time evolution of juice yield and its nutritional qualities were compared for PEF and untreated apple samples. Differentiation-associated apoptosis of neural stem cells is effected by Bcl-2 overexpression: impact on cell lineage determination

Apoptosis is an integral part of neural development. To elucidate the importance of programmed cell death on cell lineage determination we utilized murine PCC7-Mzl cells, a model system for neural differentiation. Treatment of pluripotent PCC7-Mzl stem cells with 0.1 microM all-trans retinoic acid (RA) causes a cease of proliferation and an initiation of differentiation into neurons, glial cells and fibroblasts.
