Esthesioneuroblastoma presenting with epifora in a young child

1997

Esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB) is an uncommon tumor believed to arise from the olfactory epithelium. 1 This neoplasm has rarely been reported in children, with only 12 cases reported to date among patients younger than 10 years. 2 The usual initial symptom in children, as in older patients, is nasal obstruction or epistaxis 3 ; consequently, the tumor is often first seen by an otorhinolaryngologist. We report a case of ENB in a young child in whom the initial symptom was epiphora; to our knowledge, this initial symptom is previously unreported, and ENB must now be considered in the differential diagnosis of epiphora in childhood. Report of a Case. A white 6-year-old male child was seen on Janu…

Therapeutic laser guidelines: On the effects of laser radiation on human skin-fibroblast metabolism in culture

1989

A promising field of laser utilization is the modification of cell behaviour. Acting on cell biological functions it might be possible to use them to improve medical therapies. This possibility suggests investigation of dosimetry guidelines employing different wavelenghts, power and exposure durations for future potential use of lasers in medicine.

Surgical management of ameloblastoma. Review of literature

2019

Background Ameloblastoma is an odontogenic tumor that represents 1% of all tumors in the oral cavity and it is clinically classified in three types. Currently, solid and multi-cystic are considered locally aggressive, with high recurrence rates with conservative treatment. Material and methods Objective of the present review is to assess whether the surgical treatment should be conservative or radical. English articles published between 2009-2014, with available summary and in humans were included. Results 241 articles were found, 188 were excluded because analyzing. 53 articles were analyzed and finally 14 were selected for this review. Conclusions The optimal surgical treatment of amelobl…

Belastung und psychosoziale Betreuungsbedürftigkeit von Glioblastompatienten

2011

Glioblastoma patients should be provided with a professional health care system that helps reduce their psychosocial burden. The aim of this study was to identify patients in need of psychosocial intervention. In addition, it was examined whether physicians' assessments adequately address the burden patients are under and their need for intervention. During their visit to one of two neurosurgery outpatient departments, n = 49 glioblastoma patients filled out the short version of the Hornheider questionnaire (HFK). Consulting physicians also rated their patients' burdens in a specially adapted version of the questionnaire (HFK-F). The results of the psychometric evaluation with both instrume…

Is Nephron Sparing Surgery Justified in Wilms Tumor With Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome or Isolated Hemihypertrophy?

2016

Background Patients with Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) or isolated hemihypertrophy (HH) treated for a Wilms tumor (WT) carry an increased risk of developing metachronous lesion. There are no guidelines on precise indications for nephron sparing surgery (NSS) in unilateral WT (UWT). The objective of this retrospective study was to delineate the indications of NSS in patients with BWS/HH treated for WT and to evaluate their outcome. Procedure All cases of BWS/HH treated for a WT according to SIOP protocols from 1980 to 2013 were reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups (G): isolated UWT (G1) and bilateral lesions (G2) with two subgroups: bilateral tumors suspected of malignancy (G2…

An unusual fatal case of overdose of Vinblastine and review of literature

2017

The pharmacological treatment of neoplasia is based on the use of chemotherapeutic substances. Chemotherapeutic agents can cause acute and chronic toxicity even at therapeutic doses. For this reason their overdose puts a patient’s life at severe risk. This work presents an unusual fatal case of overdose subsequent to an accidental massive administration of Vinblastine (90 mg instead of 9 mg), slow bolus (five minutes), to a 33-year-old woman who suffered from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The administration of the massive dose was due to a transcription error of the therapeutic treatment plan and miscommunication between the health professionals which caused the use of the wrong dose. The foren…

Non-endodontic periapical lesions clinically diagnosed as endodontic periapical lesions: A retrospective study over 15 years

2021

Background This study aimed to provide the frequency and demographic data of non-endodontic periapical lesions clinically misdiagnosed as endodontic periapical lesions from a Southeast Asian population over a 15-year period. Material and methods A retrospective study was conducted from departmental archives between 2005 and 2019. Cases clinically diagnosed as endodontic periapical lesions were retrieved. Then, cases with a histopathological diagnosis of non-endodontic periapical lesion were selected. Demographic data of non-endodontic periapical lesions were recorded. Radiographic features of cases with available radiographs were analyzed. Results Of 1,566 cases clinically diagnosed as endo…

The genomics of the human endometrium

2012

AbstractThe endometrium is a complex tissue that lines the inside of the endometrial cavity. The gene expression of the different endometrial cell types is regulated by ovarian steroids and paracrine-secreted molecules from neighbouring cells. Due to this regulation, the endometrium goes through cyclic modifications which can be divided simply into the proliferative phase, the secretory phase and the menstrual phase. Successful embryo implantation depends on three factors: embryo quality, the endometrium's state of receptivity, and a synchronised dialogue between the maternal tissue and the blastocyst. There is a need to characterise the endometrium's state of receptivity in order to preven…

Case Report: Unusual Clinical Presentation of a Rare Cardiac Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor in Children: The Differential Diagnosis With Pediatri…

2021

Introduction: There are still no guidelines about pediatric cardiac cancers. The purpose of this work is to provide new scientific data facilitating the differential diagnosis of a rare cardiac tumor with an unusual presentation, such as the cardiac inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT).Case Presentation: A 3-year-old male child presented with several symptoms including unconsciousness, vomiting, and drowsiness. A clinical and neurological examination revealed a unilateral (right) motor delay and positive unilateral Babinski sign. Electrocardiogram (ECG) was normal.Diagnostic Assessment: The total body computed tomography (CT) scans showed hypodensity in the left temporal–parietal lobe, …

Differentiation between brain metastases and glioblastoma multiforme based on MRI, MRS and MRSI

2009

Brain metastases and glioblastoma multiforme are the most aggressive and common brain tumours in adults and they require a different clinical management. Anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or clinical history, cannot always clearly distinguish between them. This study describes and verifies the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) in combination with MRI for differential diagnosis of glioblastomas and metastases. Feature selection methods are applied to the magnetic resonance (MR) spectra of 121 patients and relevant features are detected. Different classification methods are used to distinguish glioblastoma multiforme and…
