SEMIQUANTITATIVE 123I-METAIODOBENZYLGUANIDINE SCORE AS A PROGNOSIS MARKER IN HIGH RISK NEUROBLASTOMA: CORRELATION WITH OTHER PROGNOSTIC MARKERS AND MINIMAL RESIDUAL DISEASE IN BONE MARROW. Purpose: Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG), specifically taken up in cells of sympathetic origin, provides a highly sensitive and specific marker for the detection of metastases in neuroblastoma. Our aim has been to investigate whether response to induction therapy, evaluated by 123I-MIBG correlates with overall survival (OS) and other prognostic factors in children with metastatic neuroblastoma. Patients and Methods: Medical records and imaging studies from 28 patients with stage 4 neuroblastoma have been r…

Antitumor Cell-Complex Vaccines Employing Genetically Modified Tumor Cells and Fibroblasts

2014

The present study evaluates the immune response mediated by vaccination with cell complexes composed of irradiated B16 tumor cells and mouse fibroblasts genetically modified to produce GM-CSF. The animals were vaccinated with free B16 cells or cell complexes. We employed two gene plasmid constructions: one high producer (pMok) and a low producer (p2F). Tumor transplant was performed by injection of B16 tumor cells. Plasma levels of total IgG and its subtypes were measured by ELISA. Tumor volumes were measured and survival curves were obtained. The study resulted in a cell complex vaccine able to stimulate the immune system to produce specific anti-tumor membrane proteins (TMP) IgG. In the g…

Mucocutaneous diseases with manifestations in the head and neck region: 24 years of experience in a Dermatology service

2023

This study aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological features of mucocutaneous diseases with manifestation in the head and neck region. A retrospective analysis of a dermatology reference center database was carried out. Over 24 years. Clinicopathological data were collected from medical records and the data was analyzed by descriptive statistics. A total of 11.538 medical records were analyzed, being 152 cases of mucocutaneous diseases with manifestations in the head and neck region. Cutaneous lupus erythematosus was the most prevalent diagnosis (66.4%). Face (44.1%), females (79.6%), and patients with 45 years mean age were the most common features. In the oral cavity, the most affected r…

Nutritional properties and plausible benefits of Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) on bone metabolism and osteoimmunology : a mini-review

2020

Bone is a hard connective tissue that undergoes a systematic renewal. This highly dynamic organ is made up of four different types of cells, however, bone formation is commonly attributed to osteoblasts and bone resorption to osteoclasts. Bone tissue formation occurs during embryonic development and in certain post-birth pathological conditions. The immune system could influence the functions of bone cells, and the crosstalk between hematopoietic, immune, and bone cells is known as osteoimmunology. Indeed, cytokines produced by immune cells, including TNF-α and IL-6, are critically implicated in bone pathogenesis. It is well established that diet plays an important role in bone health and f…
