Two-year retrospective analysis of the international impact of Journal of Optometry: part II

2011

The Journal of Optometry – Peer-reviewed Journal of the Spanish General Council of Optometrists- was launched in March 2008 publishing the first issue by September 2008. It is now reaching 2.5 years of activity in spreading clinical and scientific knowledge in the field of Optometry and Visual Science and related areas. Despite this short path within the international scientific publication scenario, it is appropriate to stop and reflect about the challenges, achievements and the numbers that are making J Optom a reference in this competitive area. In this editorial we will discuss the steps followed to setup the journal and the actual international impact in terms of audience from the read…

Radošie kvartāli: Miera ielas republikas attīstības perspektīvas

2015

Maģistra darba nosaukums ir „Radošie kvartāli: Miera ielas republikas attīstības perspektīvas”. Darba mērķis ir izstrādāt ieteikumus Miera ielas attīstības iespējām. Šī darba teorētiskajā daļā autore analizē jēdzienus radošums, radošie kvartāli, sociālā un publiskā telpa. Empīriskajā daļā autore mēģina noskaidrot, kas ietekmē radošā kvartāla attīstību, analizējot interviju, aptaujas un lauka pētījuma rezultātā iegūtos datus. Darba noslēgumā tiek veikti secinājumi un sniegti ieteikumi Miera ielas republikas attīstības iespējām, balstoties uz pētījuma gaitā iegūtajiem rezultātiem.

Solitary Necrotic Nodule of the Liver: Different Pathological Findings Express a Different Histogenesis

2008

Solitary necrotic nodule of the liver is a rare benign lesion the histogenesis of which is still debated. We here report the case of a patient who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones and who was accidentally found to have a solitary necrotic nodule of 2 cm in the fifth segment of the liver. On the basis of the histological findings, the hypothesis that different pathogenetic mechanisms could be involved in the histogenesis of this lesion is discussed.

In vitro rooting and acclimatization of Sicilian Hypericum perforatum

2015

Hypericum perforatum L. is traditionally used as a medicinal plant because of different bioactive compounds with documented antidepressant and anti-inflammatory activities. Plantlets mass production with high content of these secondary metabolites has been enhanced through in vitro culture but often the process has been stopped at the multiplication phase. A study was conducted in order to set up an efficient in vitro rooting and acclimatization protocol of a H. perforatum Sicilian genotype well-adapted to south Mediterranean conditions. Aseptic nodal segments were cultured on to a Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 4.44 μM 6-benzyladenine (BA) for multiplication. Micro…

TESF Methodology for Statistics Education Improvement

2010

The need for universities to achieve excellence in the services they provide has been the subject of research for several decades. The idea of involving students and recognizing the importance of their opinions has led to the creation of various models and tools. This paper focuses on teaching, a central service from which improvement actions of an academic institution should always begin. The article reviews and updates the previously developed Teaching Experiments and Student Feedback methodology. The methodology, which is primarily addressed to statistics teachers, allows practical aspects to be organized and decisions to be made based on data that has been collected from students and sc…

Clerodane diterpenoids from Salvia splendens.

2006

Four new clerodane diterpenoids, salvisplendins A-D (1-4), have been isolated from an acetone extract of the flowers of SalVia splendens, together with an artifact (5), arising from salvisplendin D (4) by addition of diazomethane, and the already known clerodane olearin (6). The structures of the new compounds (1-5) were established mainly by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic studies and, in the case of salvisplendin A (1), by chemical correlation with splenolide B (7). Complete 1H and 13C NMR assignments for olearin (6), not published hitherto, are also reported.

Becoming Dialogical: Psychotherapy or a Way of Life?

2011

After birth the first thing we learn is becoming a participant in dialogue. We are born in relations and those relations become our structure. Intersubjectivity is the basis of human experience and dialogue the way we live it. In this paper the dilemma of looking at dialogue as either a way of life or a therapeutic method is described. The background is the open dialogue psychiatric system that was initiated in Finnish Western Lapland. The author was part of the team re-organizing psychiatry and afterwards became involved in many different types of projects in dialogical practices. Lately the focus has shifted from looking at speech to seeing the entire embodied human being in the present m…

Analysis of Word Problems in Primary Education Mathematics Textbooks in Spain

2021

A textbook constitutes the hegemonic material of the educational institution. It acts as a mediator between the official curriculum and the educational practice. Given its potential influence in the classroom, this study analyzes the treatment of word problems included in the mathematics textbooks published by the publishing houses with the greatest diffusion in Spain at every primary education grade. Three variables were analyzed: their semantic structure, their degree of challenge, and their situational context. The results indicate that most of the problems included in textbooks are characterized by low complexity and variability regarding their semantic structure. They are also characte…

'A Shared Reality between a Journalist and the Audience': How Live Journalism Reimagines News Stories

2021

Live journalism is a new journalistic genre in which journalists present news stories to a live audience. This article investigates the journalistic manuscripts of live journalism performances. With the focus on texts, the article reaches beyond the live performance to explore the wider implications and potentials pioneered by live journalists. The data were gathered from Musta laatikko (‘Black Box’) manuscripts, a live journalism production by the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. The manuscripts were analysed as eudaimonic journalism through four conceptual dimensions: self-transcendence, autonomy, competence, and relatedne…
