Factors that affect the permeability of commercial hollow-fibre membranes in a submerged anaerobic MBR (HF-SAnMBR) system

2013

A demonstration plant with two commercial HF ultrafiltration membrane modules (PURON (R), Koch Membrane Systems, PUR-PSH31) was operated with urban wastewater. The effect of the main operating variables on membrane performance at sub-critical and supracritical filtration conditions was tested. The physical operating variables that affected membrane performance most were gas sparging intensity and back-flush (BF) frequency. Indeed, low gas sparging intensities (around 0.23 Nm(3) h(-1) m(-2)) and low BF frequencies (30s back-flush for every 10 basic filtration relaxation cycles) were enough to enable membranes to be operated sub-critically even when levels of mixed liquor total solids were hi…

A filtration model applied to submerged anaerobic MBRs (SAnMBRs)

2013

The aim of this study was to develop a model able to correctly reproduce the filtration process of submerged anaerobic MBRs (SAnMBRs). The proposed model was calibrated and validated in a SAnMBR demonstration plant fitted with industrial-scale hollow-fibre membranes. Three suspended components were contemplated in the model: total solids concentration; dry mass of cake on the membrane surface; and dry mass of irreversible fouling on the membrane surface. The model addressed the following physical processes: the build-up and compression of the cake layer during filtration; cake layer removal using biogas sparging to scour the membrane; cake layer removal during back-flushing; and the consoli…

Advanced control system for optimal filtration in submerged anaerobic MBRs (SAnMBRs)

2013

The main aim of this study was to develop an advanced controller to optimise filtration in submerged anaerobic MBRs (SAnMBRs). The proposed controller was developed, calibrated and validated in a SAnMBR demonstration plant fitted with industrial-scale hollow-fibre membranes with variable influent flow and load. This 2-layer control system is designed for membranes operating sub-critically and features a lower layer (on/off and PID controllers) and an upper layer (knowledge-based controller). The upper layer consists of a MIMO (multiple-input-multiple-output) control structure that regulates the gas sparging for membrane scouring and the frequency of physical cleaning (ventilation and back f…

Selecting the most suitable microalgae species to treat the effluent from an anaerobic membrane bioreactor.

2018

[EN] Conventional treatments for nutrient removal in wastewater are shifting to Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors, which produce a high-quality effluent with minimum sludge production. The effluent resulting contains high nitrogen and phosphorus load that can be eliminated by microalgae culture. The aim of this study is to evaluate the ammonium and phosphorus removal rate of different microalgae species in the effluent of an anaerobic treatment. For that, 4 different microalgae species have been tested (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Scenedesmus obliquus, Chlorella vulgaris and Monoraphidium braunii) in batch monoculture and mixed conditions. Results indicate that all species are able to eliminate…

Analysis of cIAP1 oncogenic properties : importance of cIAP1-TRAF2 interplay

2021

Analysis of cIAP1 oncogenic properties: cIAP1 and TRAF2 ubiquitin ligases duo in tumor growth.cIAP1 (cellular Inhibitor of APoptosis-1) is a signaling intermediate belonging to the IAP (Inhibitor of APoptosis) family. This E3 ubiquitin ligase protein shows oncogenic properties. cIAP1 expression is frequently altered in various human tumor samples and represents a marker of bad prognosis and resistance to chemotherapies. Some IAP antagonists have been synthesized. They showed promising results in preclinical study and some of them are now being tested in clinical study. Unfortunately, these molecules are poorly specific as they can neutralize several IAP family members. Moreover, the mechani…

A Database of Spectral Filter Array Images that Combine Visible and NIR

2017

International audience; Spectral filter array emerges as a multispectral imaging technology, which could benefit several applications. Although several instantiations are prototyped and commercialized, there are yet only a few raw data available that could serve research and help to evaluate and design adequate related image processing and algorithms. This document presents a freely available spectral filter array database of images that combine visible and near infra-red information.

Understand and optimize mental strategies during motor learning

2022

Motor imagery-based motor learning, also known as mental practice, can improve motor performance. However, questions remain concerning the mechanisms involved in mental practice, at the neurophysiological and behavioral levels. In a first study, we show an increase of short-interval intracortical inhibition during motor imagery, supporting the hypothesis that motor imagery induces the generation of an inhibited motor command. In a second study, we show modulations in functional connectivity between the cerebellum and the primary motor cortex following a mental practice session, corroborating at the neurophysiological level the hypothesis of the involvement and updating of internal models af…

Etude de la régulation transcriptionnelle des lymphocytes T CD4 dans un contexte de cancer : application en immunothérapie anticancéreuse

2015

Immune surveillance of tumors is based on the ability of effector cells of the immune system to detect and eliminate the cancer cells. Notwithstanding, the complete and spontaneous regression of established cancers was observed only in very few cases. The failure of cancer resolution by the immune system could result from the combination of several factors: i) inadequate immune response related to a low tumor immunogenicity, ii) incompetent immune system consecutively to induced or acquired immunodeficiencies and iii) the selection of resistant tumor variants able to thwart immune surveillance or subverting immune responses. Developing novel cancer immunotherapy strategies leading to potent…

Revisited BIA-MS combination: Entire "on-a-chip" processing leading to the proteins identification at low femtomole to sub-femtomole levels

2008

International audience; We present the results of a study in which biomolecular interaction analysis (BIA, Biacore 2000) was combined with mass spectrometry (MS) using entire "on-a-chip" procedure. Most BIA-MS studies included an elution step of the analyte prior MS analysis. Here, we report a low-cost approach combining Biacore analysis with homemade chips and MS in situ identification onto the chips without elution step. First experiments have been made with rat serum albumin to determine the sensitivity and validation of the concept has been obtained with an antibody/antigen couple. Our "on-a-chip" procedure allowed complete analysis by MS-MS of the biochip leading to protein identificat…

Intramitochondrial crystalloids in rat pinealocytes.

1982

In the present study the rare occurrence of intramitochondrial crystalloid inclusions in the rat pinealocytes is described. They lie within the mitochondrial matrix and consist of a lattice of moderately electron-dense lines. Intersections at regular intervals form rhomboid-like subunits. The significance of these inclusions is not known.
