Inhibitory effects of indicaxanthin on mouse ileal contractility: analysis of the mechanism of action.

Recently, we have showed that indicaxanthin, the yellow betalain pigment abundant in the fruit of Opuntia ficus indica, has remarkable spasmolytic effects on the intestinal contractility in vitro. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the mechanism of action underlying the observed response. We used organ bath technique to record the mechanical activity of the mouse ileum longitudinal muscle and ELISA to measure the levels of cAMP. Post-weaning xenohormone intake affects adult rat submandibular gland in a sex-dependent manner

Perinatal xenohormone exposure impacts sweet preference and submandibular development in male rats.

Objective To determine the effect of perinatal exposure to low doses of genistein and/or vinclozolin on submandibular salivary gland (SSG) development in juvenile and adult male rats and to establish a link with sweet preference. Expression of α-methylacyl coenzyme A racemase in the dysplasia carcinoma sequence associated with Barrett’s esophagus

Two different studies demonstrated alpha-methylacyl coenzyme A racemase (AMACR) to be a highly specific marker in Barrett's neoplastic lesions. Reactive atypia was positive in 3/30 cases in these studies. We present a retrospective study of early Barrett's adenocarcinoma treated with surgery (2000-2005, n=29; M:F=5:1, median age 67 years). We analyzed the role of AMACR expression in reactive and neoplastic lesions associated with the disease of 77 different specimens (60 biopsy and 17 surgical specimens) of these patients. Fast-food consumption and body mass index in children and adolescents: an international cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether reported fast-food consumption over the previous year is associated with higher childhood or adolescent body mass index (BMI). DESIGN: Secondary analysis from a multicentre, multicountry cross-sectional study (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC) Phase Three). Parenteral nutrition improves nutritional status, autonomic symptoms and quality of life in transthyretin amyloid polyneuropathy

Transthyretin familial amyloid polyneuropathy (TTR-FAP) is an inherited amyloidosis, leading to death in about ten years in most cases due to cardiac failure or wasting syndrome. Previous studies showed that modified body mass index was related to time before death, duration of gastrointestinal disturbances, malabsorption and functional capacity. Phosphodiesterase inhibitors suppress alpha2-adrenoceptor-mediated 5-hydroxytryptamine release from tracheae of newborn rabbits.

The outflow of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) from isolated tracheae of newborn rabbits was determined by high pressure liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. This 5-HT outflow reflects release from neuroendocrine epithelial cells of the airway mucosa, as previously shown. Phenylephrine, via alpha2B-adrenoceptors, caused a transient increase in 5-HT outflow, maximally by about 250%, an effect mediated by liberation of intracellular Ca2+, as previously shown. Successful Endoscopic Resection of an Esophageal Metastasis from a Preceding Squamous-Cell Tonsillar Carcinoma

This report describes the case of a 62-year-old man with tonsillar carcinoma who had undergone esophagectomy due to an esophageal metastasis. Subsequently, a second metastasis occurred in the residual esophagus, and he presented for evaluation for local endoscopic therapy. The initial upper endoscopy revealed a type IIa - c lesion at 21 cm from the incisors, within a segment suspicious for Barrett's mucosa. As part of the complex treatment approach in this patient, endoscopic resection of the lesion was carried out using the suck-and-cut technique with ligation. Regulation of lipid flux between liver and adipose tissue during transient hepatic steatosis in carnitine-depleted rats

Rats with carnitine deficiency due to trimethylhydrazinium propionate (mildronate) administered at 80 mg/100 g body weight per day for 10 days developed liver steatosis only upon fasting. This study aimed to determine whether the transient steatosis resulted from triglyceride accumulation due to the amount of fatty acids preserved through impaired fatty acid oxidation and/or from up-regulation of lipid exchange between liver and adipose tissue.
